The body was gone.

Nora slammed her palm into her forehead, stifling a frustrated scream. Dammit! Goddammit goddammit!!

She had been hoping she'd arrive before the fledgling woke up, but in retrospect, that was probably always too much to hope for. Freshly turned vampires did have more tolerance for the sunlight than more adjusted vampires like herself, and that meant waking earlier and sleeping later. Ideally once she actually got her hands on him she could make him easier to keep track of.

She leapt up onto the dumpster and then up onto the rooftop, surveying her surroundings. How far could he have gone?

Fledglings had notoriously poor self-control, and woke up hungry. Without someone present to stop them, they could seriously hurt someone - or worse, seriously hurt someone in public and draw unwanted attention. It was for this reason that siring a new vampire usually required permission from any vampires already running the city; if she was lucky, there wouldn't be any, but she couldn't be certain.

She sighed, sitting back down and mentally organizing her priorities. She had nothing in this city - she was starting over from scratch, her situation little better than her spawn's. Nowhere to stay; no one to serve her. That would have to change quickly, and without intruding on any other vampire's territory - which was hard to do when every vampire went out of their way to lay low.

She took a deep breath; not for air, something she had no need for, but to hunt. The scent of blood attracted vampires like sharks; if her spawn had found any prey, too inexperienced to feed cleanly, they'd leave a trail.

There it was, faintly lingering in the air. She stood up and dropped off the roof, taking the shape of a bat to catch the air and soaring towards her mark. It was leading her... the same place she'd turned the boy, she realized. Of course he'd return there.

The light was on inside, and said it was open, yet she saw no one running the counter... she briefly wondered if he'd simply imitated her and lured someone into the back room, but the scent was coming from the parking lot. She swooped over towards its source - a small splash of blood dripped onto the asphalt.

It was recent, but her spawn was nowhere to be seen, and the blood on the ground drowned out any hint of a further trail... frustrating. At the very least, he hadn't torn whoever he fed off of to pieces, though might have still fully drained them.

The last thing she needed was another fledgling. Mortals drained of their last drop of blood would often raise as new vampires, even if the one feeding from them didn't turn them on purpose.

She had one more way to track down her spawn, though this was the most drawn-out. Whoever he was, he had co-workers that knew him, and she knew where they worked.

She turned her gaze to the store she'd found him in. She was in need of new thralls to help get her claws into this new city... why not start right here?
