Emma crossed her arms as she stared at the poster taped to the theatre window.
DANIEL CARTER: MASTER HYPNOTIST
Below the title, a smiling man in a dark suit pointed toward the camera while volunteers around him appeared frozen mid-laugh.
"Master hypnotist," Emma muttered. "That's not dramatic at all."
Her friend Sarah rolled her eyes.
"Come on, you haven't even gone inside yet and you’re already knocking it down?"
"I don't need to. I already know how this ends."
"And how's that, exactly?"
"Volunteer selection. Social pressure. Expectations. Maybe a little confirmation bias. Throw in a spotlight and people will do almost anything."
Sarah sighed. "You spent twenty minutes reading psychology articles before we came here, didn't you?"
"Thirty," Emma said with a smirk
"Of course you did," laughed Sarah. “Just keep an open mind.”
The doors opened, and the crowd slowly began moving into the theatre.
Emma has always considered herself the analytical type. The critical thinker who always has a question for everything and constantly asks why things are the way that they are. Before the show even begins, she's already analysing the audience selection process, looking for accomplices, studying Daniel's language patterns, and making mental notes of every technique she thinks he might use. She wasn't merely skeptical of hypnosis - she actively disliked it. Not because she thought it was dangerous, but because she thought it was dishonest. Every video she'd ever seen looked the same: volunteers barked like dogs, forgot their names, or became convinced they were celebrities. The audience laughed and the hypnotist took a bow.
To Emma, hypnosis is simply a combination of social pressure, suggestion, and people playing along because they want attention. In her mind, she was already preparing her arguments. People wanted to believe. The hypnotist wanted them to believe. Everyone cooperated. The end. Tonight she intended to gather evidence and prove herself right.
Emma deliberately chose a seat halfway back, close enough to observe but far enough to avoid becoming involved.
Daniel noticed her in the crowd almost immediately.
The stage lights dimmed, and a ripple of applause spread through the audience. Daniel Carter stepped onto the stage. A rather tall, composed, and confident man appeared, and without seeming arrogant, he crossed to the centre of the stage and waited for the applause to fade naturally. No dramatic music. No booming introduction. No exaggerated announcements.
Already that bothered Emma slightly. A showman should have been acting like a showman. Instead, Daniel looked more like a professor about to begin a lecture.
“Remember: open mind,” Sarah whispered in the seat next to her, noticing her restlessness. Emma just smirked and kept her eyes on the stage.
"Good evening, everyone" he said. The microphone carried his voice easily throughout the room.
"Before we begin, I'd like to ask a question. How many people here believe hypnosis is real?"
More than half the audience raised their hands. Sarah included. Emma just rolled her eyes.
"How many aren't sure?"
Several more hands appeared.
"And how many think this is all nonsense?"
A handful of people laughed.
Emma raised her hand immediately. Sarah laughed. Daniel noticed. She was almost certain he noticed. For a brief moment his gaze paused in her direction before moving on.
"Excellent," he said.
Over the next ten minutes he spoke about concentration, imagination, and attention. Then volunteers were invited onto the stage.
Emma watched carefully. Very carefully. Every person chosen appeared enthusiastic.
“Of course they do,” she thought. “People who want hypnosis to work are more likely to volunteer.”
The first demonstration began, and Daniel asked several volunteers to imagine their hands being pulled together by powerful magnets. Emma immediately started analysing everything - body language, subtle movements. Everything seemed exactly as she expected, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. And yet, she noticed one volunteer appeared genuinely surprised when her hands touched. Not theatrical surprise. Real surprise.
“Interesting.”
The next demonstration followed. Then another. And the show carried on with Daniel explaining each segment of the show. Each time suggestions were carried out, Emma mentally constructed explanations. Each time those explanations worked... mostly. But not perfectly. Little details kept bothering her. The reactions looked too varied. Some volunteers responded immediately. Others gradually. A few barely responded at all. Sarah noticed the unease on her face and laughed.
“If everyone were pretending, shouldn't they be more consistent?” she asked.
Emma quickly dismissed the thought.
There were countless possible explanations. Still, the question lingered.
All the while, Daniel had noticed her in the crowd, noting that she stayed in her seat when volunteers were called up. Throughout the opening demonstrations, he catches glimpses of her shaking her head, crossing her arms, and whispering explanations to the people seated beside her. Most performers might avoid such a disruptive skeptic.
Daniel is not one of those performers.
As the people are enjoying the show, having a laugh at the subjects dancing to some imaginary music, he checks in with the crowd to make sure everyone is enjoying the show.
“How many of those skeptics believe what they see now?”
The audience laughed. Emma heard Sarah let out a giggle as she poked her elbow and rolled her eyes. Daniel settles the volunteers back into a trance once again. As they sit, sprawled out in their chairs on the stage, he addresses the crowd once more.
“While we have our lovely group of volunteers basking in the feeling of trance, would anyone else like to join them to get the experience?”
The crowd murmurs. A few hands go up. Daniel’s eyes stay focused on Emma as he makes his way towards her from the stage.
Emma kept quiet and looked at Daniel, her brain working overtime. She found it difficult to find mistakes and gather evidence that all of this wasn’t real. Whenever a demonstration looked impossible, he offered an explanation. Wherever a demonstration succeeded, he emphasized that the volunteers were responsible for the results.
The audience loved him. But Emma remained unconvinced.
Daniel ended up next to her in the crowd. He looked at her with a warm smile.
“And how about yourself? Have you enjoyed the show so far?”
“Everyone seems to be enjoying it so far.”
“That’s not answering my question.”
“I wouldn’t say I’m a firm believer just yet.”
The crowd laughed. Daniel kept her eyes on Emma.
“So, you’re still skeptical, after all you’ve seen?”
Emma smiled at Daniel.
“That’s alright. Skepticism is useful. You’d be surprised to know those who question the process tend to do better than most at going under.”
Emma’s smile faltered a bit.
“How about this? Join me. If you think tonight was clever acting, coincidence, or anything else, come with me and I’ll offer you a fresh perspective on the whole thing from the stage.”
Sarah giggles.
“Oh, this will be fun.”
Emma scoffs.
“Hush you. And what happens if I prove you wrong?”
“Only one way to find out then, am I right?”
“Alright,” she thinks. She'll be able to prove how the entire act works.
Daniel guides her to an empty chair and proceeds to make sure the volunteers are still comfortable. Emma makes a silent promise to herself: she will follow every instruction perfectly, paying attention to every detail, and identify exactly where the deception occurs.
The first surprise comes quickly.
Daniel doesn't try to overpower her. He doesn't argue. He doesn't even attempt to convince her that hypnosis is real. Instead, he agrees with her skepticism.
"If this doesn't work," he tells her, "you'll have the best seat in the room to explain why."
The audience laughs. Emma smiles confidently.
The challenge begins.
As Daniel guides a simple concentration exercise, Emma follows closely, searching for hidden tricks. Yet her determination to observe every detail has an unintended consequence: she becomes more focused than anyone else. The more carefully she listens, the more immersed she becomes. The more immersed she becomes, the more naturally she responds. For the moment, everything else seemed slightly less important as she hung on to his every word. Noting how every sensation he described, she felt. Daniel gave instructions. Emma followed them. Not blindly. Intentionally. Suggestions became easy to imagine, and experiences became easier to create in her mind.
Her beliefs changed at a moment’s notice – she believed she had 6 fingers, she believed the number 4 didn’t exist, she believed she was the world’s best dancer. She was having the time of her life, and yet at the same time she was convinced her mind was playing tricks on her, the way everything felt so surreal. She lost her sense of time as the show went on and was completely focused on being the best volunteer for as long as the show went on.
The audience was having the best time. Sarah made sure to take lots of videos to savour the moment. The volunteers did a great job with all the suggestions they were given, and Daniel was an exceptional performer and did all the right things to make sure everyone left satisfied with the show. He made sure to tend to every volunteer for all kinds of variety, and made sure that Emma was front and center as the main star, having convinced the skeptic of his abilities. He went on his way int making sure that he laid the groundwork for Emma to be even more receptive for his future shows, should he ever come around again. He was determined to be a regular in her town just for her.
What was supposed to be a battle of wills gradually becomes a psychological chess match. And Daniel seemed to win the battle with ease.
After the show, Emma becomes obsessed. Not with hypnosis itself, but with the mystery.
“How did it work on me like that? I was so sure it wasn’t real,” she thought.
Sarah noticed the pained look on her face and made sure to poke fun at it for some time.
“That’s one way to make you a believer, huh?” Sarah laughed on the way home.
“Oh, shut up. Clearly, I was caught a bit off guard.” Emma muttered.“
Says the one who overanalyses everything,” Sarah laughed. “I’m sure you’ll get to defend your honour the next time he rolls into town for another show.”
Emma rolled her eyes and rode home in silence. She couldn’t stop thinking about how vulnerable she came across. How easily hypnotized she was. She had millions of questions swarming in her mind. This was one night she was not going to forget so quickly.
This carried on for months on end. When the next show came in town, she made sure to attend. She was determined to prove Daniel wrong. And every time she ended up on the stage, the result was the same. The initial resistance. Her walls crumbling down. A blur. The realization when she fully awoke. Again. And again. Their growing rivalry became a popular feature of the events for the regulars of the show in the town. Audience members begin expecting the skeptical woman to challenge the hypnotist.
By now she understands hypnosis far better than she did during their first meeting. She knows the techniques. She recognizes the patterns. She is convinced that, if anyone could resist, it should be her.
Daniel smiles. He knows something she doesn't.
The reason Emma responds so well isn't despite her intelligence and skepticism - it's because of those very same aspects. Her curiosity creates intense focus. Her focus creates immersion. Her immersion creates responsiveness. The very qualities that made her a skeptic also make her an exceptional subject. As the mind games carry on, Emma realizes that every challenge she issued, every test she devised, and every attempt to disprove hypnosis had been strengthening exactly the mental skills needed to experience it.
Daniel doesn't defeat Emma. Instead, he leads her to the answer she has been chasing from the beginning.
The greatest skeptic he has ever met becomes the most responsive subject he has ever worked with, and the rivalry that began as a confrontation evolves into a partnership built on mutual respect. They began to see each other often outside of shows. In her mind, he didn’t seem all that bad once he had gotten to know him throughout all these challenges. Her outlook gradually changed, and what Emma originally believed would be the time of her life of exposing a fraud becomes the adventure of a lifetime as she learns more about herself than she thought she knew.
