This is my finished last-minute entry into tvattrcerebr's Made to Order contest. It doesn't feel great finishing it on the last possible day, but at least I managed to get it out. Honestly I kinda struggled through making this so I'm really hoping the concept is interesting enough to make up for the lower quality. Or maybe the quality is fine and it just feels worse to me because of how fucking hard this was to get myself to write omg. I've definitely come to realize that if I'm not vibing with a story concept too much, it's REALLY hard to get myself to write it unfortunately. Also I finally landed a job, which while great did mean I didn't have much time for writing regardless.

All that said, I think this turned out fine. It's also loosely based in the setting from the game Look Outside, because that setting is awesome and has SO much potential for hypno/tf stuff. I don't really reference anything from the game though, so I doubt it counts as fanfiction.

The makeshift vehicle came to a stop with a loud clank, narrowly avoiding hitting a large chunk of earth jutting up from the ground. Candace grit her teeth, bracing herself against the jolt. She glanced over at Jacqueline, the driver grinning back at her. "Hey, at least nothing fell this time!" Candace gave an emotionless grunt and looked out the window. A massive building towered over them, not showing a single sign of life. The factory was clearly abandoned, possibly from even before the apocalypse, and so the chances of finding fresh supplies were... quite unlikely. But unfortunately, they didn't have much room to be picky in this new world. A lot of the good places for supplies had been picked clean already, not to mention how many of them had been turned into surreal death traps by the apocalypse. Even if all they found was a rusty toolbox or a stale piece of hard candy, it was better than getting attacked by a Cursed or almost shredded by living machinery. Still... She wasn't confident this was going to be worthwhile. She sighed to herself, then looked back at Kana and Sasha. "Alright, guys. Grab your weapons and let's head in."

The four survivors quietly entered the abandoned building, careful not to draw attention to themselves. Even an abandoned building could easily have cursed or infected hiding inside. Candace glanced around, hoping to see something useful, but the pickings were very slim. All the machinery was long unused, covered in dust and rust, and nothing immediately stood out as interesting. But the building was quite massive, so there was a bit of hope. Too massive to quickly cover in a group, though... "Alright, let's split up to cover more ground! Hmm... Jacqueline, you check back there next to the old machines. And be careful, alright? Just focus on getting what's easy, don't risk getting an infected wound while salvaging some rusty metal." Jacqueline rolled her eyes slightly but grinned, and began scurrying off towards the back. Candace held up a hand. "Don't run off yet! Alright, Sasha, you check over that direction, it looks like it might have been for cleaning the parts. Careful not to get any chemicals on you, alright?" Sasha nodded calmly, happy to go along with the plan. Kana looked eagerly up at Candace. "Where should I go?" Candace gave a small smile at her protege's enthusiasm. "Hmm... Alright, I was thinking I'd check up the stairs, so... You check, mm, what looks to be the employees' area back there, alright?" Kana nodded enthusiastically. "Yes ma'am!" Candace looked over at the other two, Sasha gently reminding Jacqueline not to run off. "We'll all meet back here after an hour, alright? Your watches still working?" Everyone nodded, Jacqueline quite enthusiastically seeing as she'd just fixed hers and Kana's. "Alright, good. Everyone head off!" Jacqueline immediately ran to start searching her area, and Sasha walked towards hers. Kana looked up at Candace again. "So, what do you suggest I look out for in there?" Candace thought a bit. "Mmm... Check for any non-perishable foodstuff. If we're lucky, someone left a spare can or cheap pastry lying around. Also, see if they have a first-aid station, that very well might come in handy." Kana nodded. "Got it, alright, thanks! Good luck!" She waved at Candace as she headed towards her assigned area. Candace smiled slightly at her protege as she began her search. Kana was a bit naive, but very eager to learn. Candace was eager to mold her into a fine survivor like herself some day... But they'd need supplies to reach that day. Readying her weapon, just in case, she headed up the stairs...
