A thief infiltrates the castle of a cruel and greedy king… dressed as a clown. But perhaps she’s a far better thief than her looks might suggest…

Prompt: Fool

Day 16 of @Syas-Nomis's @Hypnovember 2025!

This is a sequel of sorts to Hypnovember 2023 Day 11 (and also part 2 of Day 30 of the same year). I did have another sequel idea in the works, and I'm not 100% if this takes place before or after that one. This focuses on a VERY minor character in the first one, so no real need to read up before the story lol.

The full moon shone down brightly over the opulent castle, illuminating the courtyard. A masked figure darted almost soundlessly towards the right tower. Anyone who looked outside would only see an indistinct blur, easier to rationalize as a trick of the light than any intruder. As they arrived at the bottom of the tower, they beheld the polished, oilslicked bricks that rendered scaling the wall nigh-impossible. Luckily, they planned for this. Silently, they pulled a small silk handkerchief out of their sleeve. Followed by another, corner to corner. And another. And another. And another. They threw their colorful rope with surprising accuracy up into the window far above them. Their large shoes weren't particularly suited for climbing, but they didn't need to. With a flick of their wrist, the handkerchief rope retracted, launching them up several stories through the window. The intruder landed in a series of smooth somersaults into a dramatic flourish, bowing majestically to the room. "Ahhh, shame nobody was here to see th- Ohhhh, somebody was~!"

The guard, having unfortunately chosen just this moment to take a small break from his shift, could hardly stand upright now. Before he could even regain his balance, the brightly dressed girl bounded up to him, her hat jingling and her shoes squeaking. "Aww, is your sight still spinning and swirling from the sudden somersaults? You saw the spinning spirals and so you shouldn't stand, sit down, sit down, so silly you seem, so sleepy you stare, staring into some silly spiraling eyeS, seeing them spin so swiftly, spinning and swirling, shimmering and shining, stop standing now silly, sit and sink, sink into Sleep~!" She booped his bose, and he didn't so much sit as collapse into her arms, already fast asleep. Clevlie the clown giggled. The heist was off to a fantabulous start~!

Clevlie gently tucked the guard into a corner, but not before removing his armor and outer garments and hanging them from the ceiling with his belt, just to give him a funny surprise when he woke up~! She took a small square of paper from her pocket and quickly unfolded it into a map of the castle larger than her torso. Thanks to a certain friend's sweet someone, it was wonderfully detailed, and she knew not only where she was, but where all the guards were!... supposed to be, sometimes they took breaks and got sent to sleep early~ Quickly folding the map back to pocket-size, she snuck out into the hallway,  the soft jingling and squeaking of her outfit everpresent.

Some of the other performers were annoyed that Clevlie always got to perform the heists. Always saying stuff like "she's too noticeable, she's still dressed as a performer, she keeps leaving calling cards, she never takes things seriously", and other rude comments. But something they never seemed to get is how much better that really made her~! As a clown, she knew all about making sure people only noticed what she wanted them to. Sure, the guards would notice the sounds her costume made, and her costume was indeed very eye-catching, but they never tended to notice her

Those soft little jingling bells and cute little squeaks? Perfectly calibrated over years of trial and error, just slipped right through their ears into their brains without them even noticing, occupying all of their subconscious focus while dulling their active senses. And her costume was so colorful, so flashy that it was just so difficult to keep their gaze on her! Not only did this give her ample time to deal with them before they could act, sometimes they were already so hypnotized by the sounds and sights that they just forgot to notice her altogether! And as for always keeping things fun~... Well, guards tended to be awfully embarrassed that a cute little clown made such a fool of them, and they tended to repress or even completely forget what happened! Her hypnotism definitely helped in that respect, but who was she to pass up on such a wonderful duo of talents like that~?

As she rounded a corner, she heard the guard coming up the hall and quickly ducked inside the closet nearby, making sure to delay her hiding just enough to give him a glimpse of her fingers. Sure enough, he started approaching, just suspicious enough to investigate, but not enough to call the alarm. Luckily for her, nobody thought to remove the bucket their sleepy little special someone had left there, and she quickly filled it up. Balancing it precariously on the slightly-open door, she backed up and listened to the approaching footsteps. Completely unaware, he pushed open the door and the bucket dropped down, absolutely drenching him. He stared at Clevlie... But didn't notice her. Or anything, really. His eyes were completely glazed over, not a thought in his head. All washed away by her lovely liquid. She kindly sat him down and put the bucket over his head before locking the door. He'd be in a comfy trance for hours, so nice of her~!

Clevlie easily snuck through the halls, the few guards that managed to notice her soon finding themself slipping on banana peels and falling (painlessly) unconscious, watching her spin and spin until they slept, or smelling some wonderfully wet flowers and getting comfy trances of their own. Soon she was at the great treasury, the heart of the castle, and the... One man guarding it. There were supposed to be two. Normally she'd love a free pass like this, but given how much time she'd need to spend here... Well, whatever, she'd focus on the first guy and worry about the second one later.

The guard noticed some sudden movement and immediately looked towards the shadows. "Who's there?!" He looked for any more movement, but all he saw was a small colorful ball, bouncing up and down. His eyes locked onto the ball as it bounced up and down, up and down, the colors smoothly spinning around and around. Everything else faded as he watched the ball bouncing up and down, soft jingling and squeaking sounds filling his ears. Suddenly, a soft gloved hand was waved before his eyes, holding another ball with a single word on it. Sleep. His eyes instantly snapped shut and he fell limp. Clevlie gently lowered him down and looked over at the vault door. It'd definitely take some time to crack, hopefully the other guard w- "STOP RIGHT THERE!" Ah. Speak of the devil.

Clevlie turned to see the other guard at the end of the hallway, completely alerted to her presence. He grabbed a whistle around his neck to call for backup, which she could NOT have happen right now. Quick as a wink, she removed her red nose and threw it at him. Just before he could blow the whistle, the nose knocked it out of his hands and out the nearby window. "Gaah! ...Whatever, I can take you on myself!" He drew his crossbow and shot a bolt at Clevlie. She easily cartwheeled out of the way, tossing the bolt into the air after it bounced off the vault door. He shot another bolt, which she deflected with his partner's helmet and also tossed into the air. He was clearly very frustrated as he shot a third bolt which Clevlie managed to catch out of the air. She continued throwing the three bolts in the air, juggling them in a truly mesmerizing display. Swirling around and around, so easy to watch... The guard stared, transfixed, before averting his gaze. "I'm not getting fooled that easily, thief! You can't stop me with just some fancy tricks!" He drew his sword and charged... Right into a sweet, creamy pie in his face. Clevlie giggled. "Maybe I can't stop you, but I can sure distract you~!" The guard swayed back and forth, a feeling of sweet, creamy relaxation flooding his body. He collapsed, a blissful smile on his face. "Sweet dreams~!" She giggled, putting on her spare nose.

With both guards fast asleep, Clevlie was free to crack the vault door. A truly boring task, but not particularly difficult for her. Within a few minutes, the door was open, and she walked into the treasury. She stared in wonder. She'd seen a lot, but this... This was extravagant. It's no wonder King Francis had the reputation he did with all of this treasure he was hoarding. Well, that and just generally being a tyrant. Surely he could stand to let the populace have some~ She began grabbing as much gold as she could carry, which was far more than her body weight thanks to her clever little pouches. She giggled exuberantly. Oh, the feeling of wealth redistribution, one of the best things in the world next to the cheers of a sold-out crowd! She was almost too absorbed in her glee to notice someone approaching the door. "Wh-Who's in there?! I... I'm warning you, I... I-I'll call the guards, I will!"

Clevlie turned and saw a maid looking at her, trembling. She smiled sweetly and walked up. She waved her hands before the maid's eyes. "Nobody's in here~" The maid's eyes fluttered. "Wh-What...? N-No, I can see you in there..." Clevlie giggled and put her hands over the maid's eyes. "No you can't~ You can't see anything now, can you~" The maid was too confused to do anything but relax into Clevlie's touch. "Whah...? No... Can't see anything..." Clevlie leaned down and began whispering in a soft, hypnotizing tone. "You can't see anything~ And seeing is believing, so you don't believe anything happened here~ You were never near the treasury tonight, and you certainly never noticed anybody inside~" The maid nodded, her voice growing soft. "...never near the treasury..."

Clevlie leaned closer. "Nothing strange happened tonight~ You never met a pretty clown who put you into a Trance, a warm and cozy Trance, a silly sleepy Trance that makes your head fuzzy and your mind whirly and twirly until you don't know what's happening anymore, but don't worry the pretty clown you never met is here to help you think, guide you through your Trance, make you feel all soft and silly and sleepy~ Never met a pretty clown who gave you a shiny gold coin and told you to keep it safe, to tell nobody about it even yourself, because you need to use the shiny gold coin to go to the circus tomorrow, go to the circus and give the ticket taker the gold coin and she'll give you a ticket and you can see the pretty clown for the first time ever and she can put you into a silly Trance all you like~ Do you understand~?" The maid giggled sleepily, drooling slightly. "...whar...?" Clevlie giggled and pressed a coin into her palm. "Your subconscious will understand, that's the magic of Trance~ Boop!" She booped the maid's nose, sending her deeper into trance, and she quickly locked the treasury door. "Go back to work now, ignore the pretty clown you never met~!" She snapped her fingers and the maid blinked, happily walking past her to do her duties, suggestion firmly planted to visit the circus tomorrow...

Clevlie snuck through the now quite hypnotized hall back the way she came, lowering herself down from the tower using her handkerchief rope again. However, she didn't leave quite yet. She had a little favor she had to fulfill. Sneaking completely unnoticed by the few insomniac passersby, she exited through the gates she never entered, and stood before a pair of guards who looked at her, shocked to see an intruder exited through the gates instead of entering. One of them, a large, grumpy looking brunette, glared down at her and raised her weapon. "What are you doing in... in... mmmm..." Clevlie produced a shimmering silvery rose, and the girl's demeanor instantly changed. She gently took the rose, her eyes fluttering and a dreamy smile appearing on her face. Clevlie smiled kindly. "Pressa says hi~!" The guard nodded sleepily. "Pressaditia says hi..." Clevlie giggled, before remembering something. “Oh, and if you see a little red ball on the ground in the courtyard, just put it in your pocket and forget about it~!” Suggestion planted, Clevlie left the sweet special someone to stare entranced at her paramour's rose as she headed back home.

As for the other gate guard, well, he was never a problem. Clevlie was spinning a plate on her other hand the whole time, spinning him down into a silly, soft,

Sleep~

I spelled Clevlie's name wrong the entire time I was writing the story and didn't realize until I was about to upload it...

I originally had her as more overtly magical, until I realized it was way more interesting (and funny) if she was just an exceptionally skilled rogue/hypnotist with a flair for the clownish arts.

The scene with the maid was supposed to have her hypnotizing the person who caught her into believing they robbed the treasury and using those magic rings that connect and disconnect as "handcuffs" before sending her to sleep, but, uh, that seemed mean once I made them a maid so I just made it a yuri confusion induction (I think it qualifies as that)
