Chapter 3
Still floating on the citrus clouds, Macy followed Carter out of the mall.
“Well, that was interesting,” she said vaguely. “What a unique person. So blonde and dumb!”
“Oh, come on, Macy. Surely, even you are a little jealous of her, right?”
Macy was. It was a small sliver in her heart. She shouldn’t be jealous of a woman who was so diametrically opposed to her. But she was.
“Oh, come on! What have I got to be jealous of Aimee for?” Macy said, hoping to mask the genuine nature of the question with incredulity. She WAS jealous of Aimee - it was just that she didn’t know why.
“Well, she’s got that long, thick blonde hair. You’d like that, deep down, wouldn’t you? Thick, blond waves cascading down your head. Don’t you want to have that?”
Macy smiled thinly as the jealousy soared through her middle.
Yes, that was it. Her hair. It was a fit of intense, intense jealousy. So intense, she felt it welling up inside her throat. She didn’t really want to be jealous of the blonde bimbo. She just couldn’t help it.
Macy had shaved her head a few years ago and had kept it brutally short since then. She’d received her fair share of barbs from Carter along the way, but today was the first day that she truly regretted it. She ran her fingers through her hair with a deep inner sadness.
They reached the campus parking lot. Just before her car, Carter stopped her and spun her around.
“Oh, come on, Macy. Don’t let it get you down. How about we get breakfast tomorrow before a full day of studying?”
“That sounds good,” Macy sniffed. She felt better the instant Carter told her not to let it get her down. He did have a way with words. The jealousy was still there, though, burning her heart, quietly in the background.
“You know,” Carter began, “Hair’s important. But happiness is more important. Why don’t you sleep on it tonight? I’m sure that when you wake, there’ll be a solution to your problems.”
His certainty was infectious, Macy thought. Normally she would dismiss Carter’s solutions to things as being harebrained or ill-thought through. But this one sounded great. Sleeping on it, a solution will present itself to her in the morning.
She was feeling tired already.
