Chapter 2

They managed to have a coffee together without killing each other. A blessing, Macy thought. They kept their conversation light. Macy could read the conversational tides, could scope out the way it was going, and redirect it off to safer grounds - away from women’s rights and towards their shared interest in metal, fantasy books, or cinema. Anything for a few moments with Carter without wanting to stove his head in with a brick. Exhausting - and why should she bother - shouldn’t he moderate himself? Still, there were times when all Macy wanted was a quiet life.

The pair emerged from the coffee shop into the autumnal gloom of late afternoon. The setting sun’s orange pierced through sparse trees that lined the avenue of shops that led from the mall. It was quiet and cool. Entering into sweater weather. Macy liked that - summer wasn’t her vibe. She wore too many clothes for the blazing sun.

They proceeded up the avenue toward the mall, taking their time.

Browsing the shops. The pair weren’t chatting about much, just idly passing the time - neither wanting to end their time together.

The mall was quiet. Midweek afternoon. The occasional shopper darted in and out of stores, but otherwise, the mall was nearly deserted.

All except for a blond, buxom woman - an hourglass figure and voluptuous curves. Flaxen hair. Dazzling blue eyes. High, rosy cheekbones.

She wore a clingy white blouse that barely concealed her ample breasts. Blue jeans that fit snugly around her hips. She wore a pair of strappy white heels on her feet that clacked with every step.

She approached Carter and Macy, smiling.

Macy sneered at the vision of femininity approaching. She couldn’t help herself. She knew what Carter would be thinking. “Bet you wish all women were like this?”

Carter was about to speak when the woman interrupted him.

“Hi!” She chirped. “Can I interest you in a sample of our new perfume, Agreeable?” She waved a pink bottle towards Macy - the thick glass was shaped in the form of a heavily breasted woman.

Macy looked at the woman’s eager, vacant expression - her perfectly made-up features, her heaving bosom, and her straining painted lips, and felt a tinge of sympathy. It must be tough on a quiet day like this to hock perfume. Still, there was no way she was going to try it.

“No, thank you,” Macy said, grabbing Carter’s arm and trying to head around the ditzy blonde.

“No, hang on,” Carter said, standing stock still. “What’s the harm in trying it?”

“Right?” The bimbo before her chirped.

Before Macy could object, the blonde had sprayed a healthy dose onto the thin sample card. Most of it squirted past the card and landed on Macy’s chest.

She breathed it in. The heavy perfume smelt of citrus and sweet - probably lilac. Very sweet. “Mmm…” She breathed the scent into her lungs, letting it coat her senses. It spread through her thickly. Heady. Overwhelming.

For a moment, the smell was all there was. No mall. No Carter. No woman. Just rich lemon and lilac filling her nose, filling her mind, filling her body. She had to admit - it was comforting. Reassuring. Like a big, fluffy comforter to cuddle into after a long, draining day.

The perfume wrapped her up like a warm blanket, embracing her, and sheltering her from the harshness of the world.

Then, she blinked. The world faded back in. Carter was waving his hand in front of her eyes. She smiled up at him.

“I was just saying to Aimee here. That’s a damn good-smelling perfume. Don’t you agree?”

Macy’s first instinct was to say no. How contrary of her! Just before the words were to pass her tongue, she bit them back. No. That wasn’t right. It was a damn good-smelling perfume. It was.

She nodded, slowly at first but with growing enthusiasm.

“Hmmm. You know, I’m not normally a fan of such citrusy smells. A little too girly for me, but you’re right, Carter. It is a damn good smelling perfume.”

Aimee, the blonde smiled broadly at Macy. “You know, girly stuff is for everyone. If you like it so much, you should buy some! I’ll get, like, a sweet commish and it’ll make me super happy!”

Macy made a decision. Maybe a little femininity wouldn’t hurt. She was going to buy some.

“I’d love to take some of that perfume, Aimee,” Macy smiled.

“Sweet!” The blonde bimbo practically leaped up and down with happiness, her massive globes moving up and down with her hops of joy. Carter’s eyes bugged out of his head. “Just, like, follow me!”

Aimee led them through the mall to the perfume counter just inside the department store. There she rang up a bottle of Agreeable for Macy.

“It smells so good, you’ll want to wear it every day!” Aimee said as she handed Macy the bag containing her new perfume.

Macy nodded. Yes, that sounded reasonable. Why wouldn’t she wear her new perfume every day?
