This is a two part story about Magnolia becoming more vulnerable, next part should be out later this week I hope.

“Lily, make me some pancakes this morning. I trust you won’t burn them.”

“Of course, Mistress. No, never, Mistress.” Lily repeated the words like it was routine, getting out of bed sleepily to obey. This was their life. This was the life they chose last night, after begging Magnolia to let them stay by her side. Magnolia was just about ready to throw them out onto the streets, and Lily… somehow, miraculously convinced her not to do so. They should have been happy, the way Magnolia returned to her possessive, controlling dominance as Lily stood their ground. They should have been happy to be with her, still.

So why weren’t they?

Lily ruminated on it all morning. Despite the lovely submissiveness they’d felt engulfed in last night, something felt off. Were they just tired? Magnolia was much more dominating and cruel than she usually was. So being tired would make sense. But they felt well-rested. Lily tried to work through the uneasy feeling they had as they put on some clothes and started the pancakes. Magnolia had taught them the best recipe – Lily had never had pancakes that good before then. They always made double the recipe since they’d always ask for leftovers.

It was how Magnolia liked it. And it was how Lily liked it, too – at least they thought so. ‘Merging’ with Kassandra – as Magnolia had described it earlier – felt strange to Lily. They didn’t feel quite like themself, like there was too much of them. Maybe that could explain the uneasy feeling.

Lily poured a bit of the pancake mix onto the skillet, making sure they were as round and even as possible. They got quite good at it. For a second, they looked behind them. Magnolia sat at the table, working away at her emails tiredly. Lily bit their lip. Somehow, some shred of annoyance rose to the top as they stared at their Mistress – why? Lily loved Magnolia. More than anything in the world. So why did they feel… anger?

They weren’t usually one to feel anger at all. Kassandra was, though. Lily got further in thought as they began recounting the last few days. Magnolia had hypnotized Chain away, locking him deep away again. Then… Lily couldn’t be touched, having remembered numerous amounts of abuse they’d been through.

Magnolia… told them she was sending them off. Because she didn’t think they could be touched by her again. Was that the only reason she sent them off? Because she wanted her precious toy back?

“Plaything,” Lily was jolted out of their thoughts in shock. Magnolia’s voice was tinged with indignation. “The pancakes are burning.”

“Huh?” Lily blinked. They snapped themself out of their thoughts as they flipped one and saw she was right. “O-oh, no! Oh, gosh, I’m so—”

“Start again,” Magnolia ordered. The fact she didn’t even let them apologize filled them with irritation again. “Be a little more attentive this time, would you? I know your three brain cells must be tired, but I still expect you to serve me.”

Lily responded with a “yes, Mistress,” to stop themself from hesitating. They threw out the burnt pancakes and started two new ones. They immediately realized they forgot to add more butter.

“You’re going to burn them again, idiot,” Magnolia growled. She stood up, towering over them again in a not-so-exciting way as she turned off the stove. “I know you’re tired, but try a little harder, would you, plaything? Remember your purpose is to obey me.

Lily couldn’t control the outburst that boiled up out of them. They were pissed, and somehow couldn’t control it. Without even thinking, they shouted at their Mistress.

“I’m trying! Just be a little patient with me, okay?!”

Silence filled the air as Magnolia’s eyes nearly burst out of her head. Lily’s eyes did the same, though in horror and not in shock. How could they yell at their Mistress? They’d never done that before, even the night before. They were… they were going to get punished. By Mistress. They’d only gotten punished a handful of times. Magnolia even told them not to speak back to her the night before. They fucked up, but… a part of them felt justified. Something was wrong.

They felt wrong.

Magnolia readjusted her glasses, trying to compose herself. “Kassandra? …Chain?”

Lily shook their head, looking down at their feet. “No… No, Mistress. It’s me. I’m sorry.”

“I… see,” Magnolia bit her lip, continuing to decipher what just happened. It happened so quickly, the way Lily couldn’t control themself. The tension was so thick it could be cut by a knife.

Lily finally shook their head, standing back up. “I’m going to go to the bathroom. I don’t think I’m… awake.”

“Please,” Magnolia urged, moving the skillet to another corner of the stove. Lily didn’t look back and headed to the bathroom, closing and locking the door behind them.

They ran cold water, splashing it on their face. They tried to process what had happened. They didn’t just speak back to Magnolia – they shouted at her. That was something only Kassandra would do. But… they were merged with Kassandra, right? That’s what had happened the day before. ‘Mistress is being so nice to me, letting me stay with her,’ Lily growled to themself in their head. ‘So why am I so angry with her?’

A familiar voice piped up. Kassandra. ‘Because she threatened to throw you out, Lily.’

‘I know, but—’ Lily couldn’t even question why Kassandra was speaking again. At the very least, she wasn’t screaming and breaking things.

‘She didn’t just threaten to throw you out. She did so because you couldn’t be touched, because you just remembered your childhood trauma. Of course you’re angry.’

Lily shook their head. They turned off the faucet and doubled over, feeling nauseous. ‘I’ve… never felt this angry before. I never thought I’d be so angry at Mistress Magnolia.’

Lily could feel Kassandra shrug. ‘Happens. I guess you’re feeling this way since we’re more together, now.’

The nauseous feeling began to pass as Kassandra continued to explain. Lily listened intently to the quieter voice in their head. ‘I’m assuming it didn’t feel great – not just the way you thought you’d lose her, but the way you felt…’

Lily finished the sentence. ‘Like an object. But that’s what I am to her! A plaything, a fuck toy, that’s…’ They teared up, clasping a hand over their mouth. ‘That’s our agreement, right?’

Kassandra shook her head. ‘You’re not an object. You’re her partner. And no matter what your arrangement is, you should be able to tell her how you’re feeling. Right?’

‘But… what if she doesn’t respond well? What if she calls me ungrateful, or actually throws me out this time?’

She shrugged again. How helpful, Lily sarcastically thought. ‘Well, you have two options. Either explain yourself and why you’re angry at her, or let your fury continue stewing until it actually bursts out again. Your decision.’

‘Thanks, Kassandra. That’s reassuring.’

‘Wow, Mx. Sarcasm, nice to meet you. It wasn’t meant to be reassuring, Lily, it was meant to be true.’

Lily sighed, exasperated. ‘Alright, Kassandra. Thanks, I guess I kinda know what to do now.’ Kassandra’s presence faded soon enough, and Lily continued to think. They really had to tell Mistress, didn’t they? No matter the consequences – if Magnolia loved Lily like she said she did, then she’d let them be honest. At least, they desperately hoped so. They realized more so that merging with Kassandra meant… they were more aware, now. More aware of their new boundaries and limits. Maybe that was a good thing after all.

They inhaled, and opened the door. Magnolia sat at the table with her laptop shut, now staring at Lily. It was impossible to get a read on her face. She was certainly surprised. But… was she also angry? Upset? Was she actually going to punish Lily?

They breathed out and started. “Do you love me, Mistress?”

Magnolia didn’t even hesitate. “Yes, of course. We went over this last night.”

“Then… can I be honest with you about something?”

Magnolia motioned with her hand. “Please, share.”

Lily deflated. This was a good start. They began to talk.

“I’m… really angry, Mistress.”

Magnolia lifted an eyebrow. “At me, plaything?”

Lily was about to back down or say that wasn’t the case, but they sighed and nodded.

“Interesting,” Magnolia muttered. “Go on.”

“The other day, when you found me, it was after a week of not being… me. Who knows what I did while Chain was out on the street. And that was after I remembered all… all the abuse I went through from… my stepbrother.” Lily wasn’t sure how much to say, they still felt very unsure, but they kept going since she seemed receptive. “When you told me you were sending me away, it was after you couldn’t touch me. After I kept flinching and freezing up when you did. Not even… not even a day after all of that, Mistress. It… it made me feel like the only reason you had me still was because… because I was a good screw, or something. Or… like you didn’t love me the way I loved you.”

Magnolia hummed in understanding. Lily was surprised, both by how much they felt comfortable saying, and how much she felt comfortable hearing.

“And…” Lily continued anyways. “After everything I went through… it stung. I thought, ‘is that really all I am to people?’” They shook their head, knowing how absurd they sounded. “As I fell apart in front of you… in front of the only person I really had… your first instinct was to abandon me. It hurt, Mistress, and not in the good or fun way. When I needed you most by my side, your thought was to drop me. And – and I’m grateful you didn’t! I’m glad you still have me with you! And… and I deeply love you, which I guess is why I’m saying all of this, because I don’t want what we have to be ruined. But…” Lily moved over to the table and slumped in one of the seats. “But I felt… really, really hurt.”

Magnolia looked down at the closed computer. Lily could feel their body tense up even more. Had they made a mistake? They already spoke back to their Mistress the night before. None of that was in their arrangement, let alone two days in a row. They hoped this wouldn’t be the norm. It didn’t feel good.

Magnolia opened her mouth, and Lily braced for the worst.

“Thank you for saying all of that, Lily.”

Lily blinked. She was… thanking them?

“Don’t get me wrong – it made me sad to hear I… upset you in that way. But I love and treasure what we have, and if you have to be honest with me like that every now and then – then I understand and will hear you out. If you ask beforehand, of course.”

Lily cracked the smallest smile. She was… receptive. They never expected that, but it felt nice to be heard. Especially by someone they loved. “Thank you… for listening to me, Mistress. Thank you for letting me talk.”

Magnolia nodded contemplatively. After a moment, she spoke back. “I am deeply sorry, Lily. I reacted poorly that night. I wasn’t quite sure how to react, but whatever I did was not what I should have done.”

Lily nodded. They wanted to say it was okay, but it wasn’t. Instead they just responded, “Thank you, Mistress. That means a lot to me.”

“Now,” Magnolia took her eyeglasses off and rubbed her temples. “May I be honest as well?”

Lily gulped, and nodded. “Am I being punished, Mistress?”

“No, of course not.”

“…yes, Mistress,” Lily bit their lip and waited.

Magnolia inhaled, trying to collect the words in her head. “I do love you, and I want to help you however I can. But before I met you, I barely even knew what DID was. I’m not an expert, and when I couldn’t touch you, I… I thought to myself, ‘this is the end of how much I can help you.’ I loved you, and letting you go hurt – but… I thought I was doing the right thing. I was going to get you to a therapist – which, the offer stands, if you ever want it – but I didn’t think I could help you. And… not being able to help you… demotivated me. And…”

Magnolia trailed off momentarily, avoiding eye contact with Lily. “You’re my property, and also my partner whom I love dearly. But… at the hotel. When you turned into Chain, and stormed off, and refused to speak to me… I felt…”

She didn’t end her sentence. Lily offered a suggestion. “Angry?”

“No, not angry,” she declined.

“Sad?”

“Well – yes, but… not entirely.” She continued to avoid the point.

“Then what did you feel, Mistress?”

Magnolia looked away. “I felt scared.”

Lily blinked. They didn’t even register Magnolia was capable of feeling fear.

“I spent the week sleepless. I could barely focus on anything. I checked my phone every ten seconds at most. All I wanted was to be next to you again, and thinking of never seeing you again… it kept me awake. I was scared, Lily. I don’t like saying,” her voice cracked only a little. “I don’t like telling people I get scared. It makes me feel weak. But… that’s where I was. So when I found you and you didn’t even seem like yourself again – it made me think that I’d never see you again.”

Lily looked down. Magnolia, even now, looked a little scared. What were they supposed to do? Lily did the first thing that came to mind, and put a hand gently on Magnolia’s. Magnolia, surprised, looked back up at Lily.

“I’m sorry I scared you, Mistress. And I’m sorry I got so angry.” Lily murmured. “I was scared, too. Even while unconscious, I knew I felt scared. And… I love what we have. I love you.”

Magnolia chuckled lightly, putting her glasses back on. “I love you too, my dear, sweet Lily.”

“And… you’re not mad at me for getting upset with you?”

“No,” Magnolia reaffirmed. “Not in the slightest.”

“Good… that’s good, Mistress.” Lily stood back up, wiping their eyes from the tears and moving back to the skillet. “I’ll start those pancakes again, Mistress.”

“You know what?” Magnolia stood up and walked right next to them, putting her arms around their waist. “Don’t worry about breakfast, my plaything. We’ll go to our favorite diner, today.”
