The moment the robot and I entered the shed, the floor seemed to descend and it became clear I was in an elevator of sorts. Its light is still shining in my eyes. I don’t feel afraid but I don’t feel happy either.
I just feel…peaceful. Numb. Nothing can bother me.
The elevator stops and I follow the robot through a door that slides open. I’m surrounded by computer equipment. The robot leads me into a huge room with monitors on almost every surface showing different parts of the city.
Including the area where I first started climbing up the bridge and the shed where I took a rest.
I hear the sound of metallic clicking, then I see a spider-like shadow descending from above. It’s a man wearing a harness with metallic spider legs attached to it.
His skin is…blue. Vivid blue.
Is that his brain I can see? It’s big enough that his head looks like a mushroom. His eyes are covered by these black tinted goggles and he wears a white lab coat.
He smirks.
“Deactivate inducer,” he says. The light fades gradually and I blink a few times, the robot moves away. I recoil once I start regaining my senses.
“W-who are you?!” I ask. “Why am I-I here?!”
“I am Sir-Rebro, my dear,” the man replies. And who might you be?”
I was silent for a moment. He’s curious about me? Seriously?
“W-what difference does it make whether or not you know my name?”
“You are a guest in my layer,” he responds. “An uninvited, unexpected one, but a guest nonetheless. I wish to be a good host.” I gulp.
“It…it won’t matter,” I tell him. “We won’t meet again.” Sir-Rebro grimaces a little.
“Ah. That confirms it. I had my suspicions about why you came here but my theory seems to be much more solid now. Well, if you won’t be forthcoming, I can retrieve the information in other ways.”
A bright blue light swept by my face and a nearby monitor crackled to life. It showed…me. There was text below the pictures used for my ID card.
“Nice to meet you, Miss Royce,” Sir-Rebro told me. “Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to familiarize myself with you before you were brought down here. I haven’t had the time to implement facial recognition software in my capture drone yet.”
I began to hiccup a bit when I read some of the information that was scrolling past.
“Dear me, life has dealt you a poor hand,” the man said. “You were newly pregnant when you miscarried after a hover-car accident. The doctors believed the damage to your reproductive system would essentially sterilize you.”
He smirked.
“I’m not too sure about that though.”
I was consumed by a sudden surge of anger.
“Wh-what are you talking about?!”
“I’m saying that I may be able to fix you up. The doctor’s don’t have the tools that I do.”
I was stunned. My knees felt weak. Did I hear him right?
I shook my head.
“It…it wouldn’t change anything!” I shouted. “I don’t have anything or anyone!”
“Ah, so you see yourself as no longer having purpose,” Sir-Rebro said. “I can fix that as well.”
“W…what?”
“I am still getting myself established here,” he said. “I could use an operative, an agent to help me out.”
I was aghast. He wanted me…to be his henchgirl? That was his idea of giving me a new purpose?
Again, I shook my head.
“I…I can’t. I won’t serve you. But please, I promise that if you let me go, I won’t tell anyone.”
“Come again?”
I shudder, fighting back tears.
“I won’t tell anyone you’re here. If you let me go, I’ll be out of your hair in five minutes.”
I look at the ground.
“Yours and…everyone else’s.”
“I think not.” I look up at him with a jolt.
“Even if you didn’t willingly tell anyone where I am, the authorities will come here regardless of if you succeed or not. The dead still speak even though they cannot talk.”
Sir-Rebro sighed.
“I hoped it wouldn’t come to this. I hoped you’d be reasonable. Unfortunately, that hope was misplaced. Hold her.”
I felt metallic hands pinning my arms to my sides. Sir-Rebro tapped his goggles and the same light pattern appeared in the lens. Before I could even turn my head, he held it in place.
“Look into the light, Lillian,” he said. “Remember how calm it made you last time. There is nothing to fear. Relax. Relax and listen.”
I…I can’t look away. I can’t even blink.
All I can do is…relax...and listen...
