My name is Lillian Royce, and I'm certain that by time the sun goes down, I won't be here anymore.

I'm heading to a megaway overpass right now. I know exactly what I intend to do once I get there. As I climb the stairs, I look out at New Houston. I’m so close to the Dyna Dome. The sports arena is lit up with green, black, and blue.

It looks so vibrant from where I’m standing. My chest aches. I can’t believe I was there just a month ago, being one person among two hundred thousand watching a game with a man I thought loved me with all his heart.

I shake my head and keep going. I can see the cars and trucks on the megaway speeding past. If I’m lucky, I won’t attract any attention before I get to where I’m going.

The sky is yellow and red. The sun won’t be up for long. I look down to see a double decker truck speeding along the far right lane. For a moment, I wonder if anyone is going to see me. Maybe even try talking me down.

But I shake my head. No way. In a city like this, nobody would spare me a second glance. I climb a ladder that leads me right in front of what looks like a maintenance shed. I’m panting once I make it all the way up.

I just need a moment to take a breath. I lean against the wall of the shed, letting some of the fatigue drop away. My arms ache something fierce and there’s a bit of pain in my legs.

All of a sudden, I hear something slide and I gasp. It came from my right. It came from…the door. It’s wide open now. All of a sudden, I realized I never checked to see if anyone was inside the shed. I start to scoot back a bit, trying to get out of the sight of whoever is going to come out.

There’s an electronic hum coming from inside. It’s getting louder. Then I see something float out. It looks like a big metal ball with arms and hands. There looks like some sort of screen in the center.

It’s….it’s a robot. And it’s looking right at me. The hands grab onto my arms and the rest of it lowers itself to my eye level. I’m about to scream when part of it flashes for a moment. A beam of light is hitting me right in the eyes. It’s like I’m looking into a kaleidoscope. The scream I was about to let out fades away. My body loosens up a little.

Why…why can’t I stop looking at the light? I can’t turn my head or focus on anything else.

I feel so peaceful though.

“You will gaze into the light,” the robot says to me. “You will let your fear flow into the light. You will be calm.”

I’m not sure but I might’ve just nodded. What the robot is saying sounds so…reasonable.

I can look into the light some more.

I want to look into the light.

I’d like to look into the light.

The hands release their grip on my arms.

“You will follow,” the robot says.

That isn’t a request. I’ve just been given an order. One that I know I need to follow.

“Yes…” I replied. “I will follow...”

I got to my feet and walked into the shed with the robot, the light still shining in my eyes.

I don’t know where it’s taking me, but that doesn’t matter.

I need to follow it.
