When the coming out party’s about domsexuality instead of the homo variety
Receiving a book with a list of hypnotic triggers for many of her fellow female students, Morgan sets out to find the author, her enigmatic Mistress, who has devised a game for her to control each girl. Modren keeps us guessing, crafting an intricate, intriguing narrative that drops a handful of clues to the identity of the mysterious hypnotist across its six chapters - a smart reader might be able to figure out who it is, but I was hoodwinked. And that’s all while giving us much insight into Morgan’s mentality - and her journey to overcome her crippling social anxiety - and deftly handling a gargantuan cast, introducing each of the supporting characters in turn, illustrating them with a few efficient strokes… and then having Morgan control and fuck them. Beautiful. It all leads up to a final confrontation with the Mistress, which is equal parts shocking and thrilling. A truly remarkable read, and my favourite of Modren’s work.
