Amanda is plagued by constant insecurities about her right to be happy but her girlfriend is there for her come hell or high water.

Amanda opened her eyes and stared at the flaming numbers of the alarm clock to her right. It was 2:35 am, Pacific time, and her silk pajamas were covered in sweat. It had happened again.

“Damn it!” she thought, the clammy fabric pressing against her supple breasts. While not the worst feeling in the world, it was certainly close. She gently pushed the bed covers away to not wake up her companion and got up to clean herself. Debra didn’t flinch, not even when the bathroom door squeaked louder than it should. She really was a heavy sleeper, unlike her.

The two women had met about a year earlier, courtesy of common friends, and the chemistry between them was immediate. They liked the same songs, shared a love for screwball comedies and silly puns, and didn’t shy away from rough sex. They had more things in common, but this trifecta had been enough to seal the deal. The night after the first dinner, they hit the club circuit, drinking Vodka shots and badmouthing men, before ending up in Debra’s place, testing the limits of her water mattress. It resisted every attempt.

Of all the women Amanda had fucked over the years, Debra was the smartest, the most enthusiastic, and also the cutest. There was something about her fall-brown skin, puffy lips, and the way her hair caressed her cheekbones that drove her insane. She was her Nubian goddess, descended to the mortal realm to show her the true meaning of paradise. Their relationship was almost perfect, but one thing often loomed in the back of her mind that made her question if she was worthy of such happiness or not.

Her dreams.

They were vivid and confusing messes, infused with color and dread. Everything in them happened so fast that describing them was near impossible, except for the outcome. Every time she woke up from one, she was dripping, and filled with an overwhelming void hellbent on devouring her aspirations to happiness.

“I don’t deserve her,” she muttered. “I don’t deserve any of this! Fuck, who am I trying to fool?”

Amanda sat on the bathroom floor, the monochromatic tiles cold to the touch, tears running down her cheeks. It wasn’t the complicated nature of her nocturnal nightmares that scared her but the fact they had begun not long after first kissing Debra, perhaps the proof that what they had was sure to be short-lived no matter how much she hoped to the contrary. The depressing thoughts clang to the back of her skull, weighing her down. Suddenly, she heard her lover’s gentle voice outside the bathroom corridor.

“Mandy? Are you in there? Is everything okay?”

“Yeah...” she lied, temporarily keeping her sobbing under control. “Sorry if I woke you up. Go back to bed and I’ll join you in a minute.”

“You have nothing to apologize for, sweetie. I’m coming in, okay?”

“Please don’t...”

Before she could complete the sentence, Debra was already standing above her, worried eyes locked on her pale face. The African-American woman sat beside her and hugged her.

“Another one?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“How strong was it this time?”

“Can’t you tell? I must look like a mess.”

“No. You look absolutely gorgeous to me.”

“Don’t say that. It’s not true.”

“Of course it is. It’s whatever gets stuck in your head all the time that’s fake. You’re the most beautiful woman I know, Mandy. Do you have any idea how lucky I am that you chose me?”

“You’re the one with the beauty and the brains, dear. I’m just... plain old me.”

In a little over twenty-seven years of existence, Amanda had said many things about herself, with “plain old her” coming off as the least demeaning. The truth is, there was nothing plain about her dark-green eyes, curly blonde hair, and sculpted body. She didn’t need make-up to shine and always looked fabulous in the morning without it. With an impeccable fashion taste, she never overdressed or overaccessorized, every choice she made highlighting her natural beauty instead of distorting it.

“I bet the number of people who would love to be ‘plain’ like you count in the millions, Mandy. Come on, let’s get you up, and then we can talk about it.”

“Talk about what?”

“I want you to tell me what you remember of this last dream,” Debra pulled her up and helped her remove the sticky clothes. Then she fetched a towel and gently rubbed it against her breasts and back.

“Not much... it’s just this...”

“Emptiness? Like nothing matters and everyone is laughing at you for trying to think otherwise?”

“Yes, something like that... I hate it! I hate it so fucking much!”

“Good. I want you to despise that sensation as hard as you can so you don’t feel tempted to give in to it. Dreams are just that. The feelings they evoke can’t hurt you unless you make them real. They’re not, but we are. I’m real, you’re real. What we have is real and I’m not going anywhere.”

“Why are you so good to me?”

“Because I love you, silly. I shouldn’t have to say that by now.”

“You don’t need to, but I’m glad you did.” Their lips touched. It was a brief kiss, yet so intimate and full of passion that Amanda cried again, this time joyful tears. “God, you’re perfect!”

“As are you.”

Holding one another in their arms, the two women shared a dance under an imaginary spotlight, thousands of clapping hands blessing their union through the night. They waltzed back into bed, with Amanda taking the initiative. She wanted to be on top this time.

“Easy there, sweetie,” Debra escaped her passionate embrace and laid her down, arms to the side, legs slightly apart. Her heart was pounding like the thundering hooves of a thousand wild stallions.

“You don’t want to do it?” Amanda frowned.

“I do. I always want you inside me but there’s something I need you to do for me first,” she pressed her trimmed nails against her bosom.

“What is it?”

“There’s still some angst in your body, and it needs to know it’s not welcome among us. We’re going to get it out, you and I, like we did so many times before, okay?”

“Do we have to?” the Caucasian woman pouted like a child who had her favorite toy stolen.

“Yes. It’s imperative we do it, so you are at ease. Look at me and take a deep breath, Mandy. You already know how this goes.”

She did. Debra’s relaxation techniques had been an integral part of their relationship since day one. With a handful of words, she stilled her thoughts and made new ones bloom. It was as if she could reach inside her brain and massage it from within until all pernicious sensations were banished into the nether regions whence they came.

“Inhale, count to three, and then exhale. Keep your breathing steady and your eyes on me. Take it all in and... one, two, three, let go. Again. Fill your lungs with air and your thoughts with my voice and... one, two, three... let them flow through your lips, drifting into my words. We are going to your safe place now, that part of you where nothing can harm you or make you feel less than what you are. It’s easy to find it if you know where to look and it starts with this simple breathing exercise. Fill your lungs again and release the tension of those horrible dreams. One, two, three... there it goes, like a puff of smoke trailing into the distance and vanishing... Do it again, getting closer and closer to that blissful solace that’s fresh and sweet like spring water raining down a snow-capped mountain... See it reflected on my eyes as you continue to breathe for me... One, two, three... one, two, three... one, two, three...

“That’s it, that’s the rhythm, the beat of life and contentment coming back to you. You feel calm and relaxed, whatever ill-formed ideas that tried to assault you tonight becoming vague, blurry, non-existent. They’re not real. Things that lack substance can’t hurt you. Eyes locked on mine, breathing perfectly synchronized with my voice.. nothing but safety enveloping you. Count the numbers between breaths inside your mind... One, two, three... one, two, three... one, two, three...

“Perfect, exactly like you and the connection that binds us. I’ll keep you safe from the demons of the night and those that come at you during the day as well. All you need to do is breathe deeply and remember that it’s as easy to count up from one to three as it is to count backward from three to one, falling between the spaces until you come to rest in perfect harmony. We’ll have our fun, but first, you’ll get some sleep... warm, inviting, and tranquilizing sleep. You’ll sleep for my eyes. You’ll sleep for my words. You’ll sleep for me. Embrace this now. Peace and joy are yours. One, two, three... three, two, one... One, two, three... three, two, one... and... sleep, Mandy. Close your eyes for me and sleep.”

Amanda let out one final long exhale and dropped hard into a new fantasy, one where everything was entrancing and delightful. Spiraling snowflakes fell on her naked torso and the tip of her tongue, and she drifted with her further down. Debra kissed her forehead and said;

“Good. I can see you’re there. Stay in your haven for as long as it takes and when you open your eyes again, if you’re still willing, I’ll be here to give you the best orgasm of your life. Sleep, dear. You deserve your rest and nothing but the best. No more disheartening dreams will haunt you tonight, I promise.”

Debra tucked her in with another kiss and stepped out to the porch to get a smoke. The air was cold but not freezing, a handful of stars embellishing the dark-blue skies. The neighborhood was as quiet as always, and the comforting silence was only occasionally broken by a cat’s meow or rustling orange leaves in the wind. The young woman held the nicotine stick in her off-hand, specks of burning ash falling at her feet. She looked around to make sure no one was looking her way and stretched both arms in an upward arch, the skin on her back pulsating almost imperceptibly. Without warning, a pair of coral black wings sprouted from underneath her bra, its span enveloping the house’s front door. At the same time, another winged figure appeared before her, yellow eyes piercing hers. She had the same lustrous complexion and radiated beauty like a lighthouse in the dead of night.

“How long have you been there?” Debra asked, squishing the cigarette butt with her slippers.

“Long enough,” the other woman replied, leaning against the porch’s railing.

“Why have you come?”

“Can’t a mother check up on her daughter?”

“You have hundreds of children to choose from, and you’re not welcome. Pick someone else and leave me alone, please.”

“Don’t be rude, Serissa. I taught you better than that.”

“I don’t go by that name anymore. It’s Debra and you know it.”

“Still clinging to human nonsense, it seems. Earth is no place for an angel, Serissa. Aren’t you tired of this charade and consorting with the rabble?”

Debra pushed her mother’s wings away from her face and replied, “No. The only thing I’m tired of is you constantly showing up to mock my life choices. I’m not going back with you, okay? Not today, and not ever, so go torment someone who gives a damn.”

“Hmm... I really don’t get what you see in this place. It pains me to see you waste your eternal life like this.”

“It’s not a waste. Humans are immensely flawed creatures, but they’re also the most amazing creations of all. I’ve learned more about the way the universe works living among them than in eons by your side. I’ve known from the beginning coming here was the right choice, and meeting Amanda solidified it. This is where I belong and you won’t take it away from me.”

“Are you really willing to sacrifice everything you are for one of their kind? That’s absurd!”

“You only say that because you don’t know what true love is.”

“If I didn’t love you, I wouldn’t have come here to see you. Every second I spend in this forsaken dimension is a terrible waste of time. I hope one day you’re able to see that, too.”

“You were not invited, and no one is keeping you. I would listen to your own words and bail as soon as possible if you’re so upset,” Debra scoffed.

“You were always the cockiest of your brothers and sisters, but I see that’s getting worse as well. What have I done to you to warrant such disrespect?”

“I could name hundreds of things, but let’s start with the most obvious. Amanda’s dreams have been getting more intense and more frequent by the day. She’s troubled by insecurities that keep her up at night and threaten to undermine everything we’ve accomplished here. You wouldn’t happen to have anything to do with that, would you?”

“Are you accusing me of torturing your girlfriend?”

“You’re no stranger to things like that. I haven’t forgotten what you did to Gadamel when he chose to spend two months here against your wishes and neither did he, so... Come clean, mother. This is your doing, is it not?”

“It’s not, and I resent such vile slander. I have more things to worry about than a trifling dirty human who stole your heart.”

“You always excelled at many things, yet lying remains a weak spot. Shame on you for stooping so low! Try that again and you’ll be sorry like you’ve never been before.”

“Your threats mean nothing, Serissa. Who do you think will side with you in Heaven if you try to go against me? You’re already considered a lost cause for abandoning your calling. Do you wish to be seen as a traitor too?”

“I wish to live the way I want, with whom I want, without outside interference,” Debra’s wings grew even larger, sharp blades protruding from the tip of the shiny feathers. “She’s mine and I’m hers. I’ll stand against anyone that comes between us, the entirety of Heaven and Hell included if need be. Don’t put me to the test, mother! I stopped fearing you the day I packed and moved here.”

“One day, you’ll probably regret those words, but fine! Keep your human pet, but if you love her so much, you shouldn’t keep such a big secret about yourself hidden for long, don’t you think? Hate burns brighter than love when betrayal is involved, never forget that!”

“Forget where I live, mother. If I sense you anywhere near us ever again, I won’t indulge in small talk.”

“Take care, Serissa, and don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

The angel’s mother snapped her fingers and disappeared without a trace, except a single plume laid forgotten on the welcome mat. Debra grabbed it and crushed it between her fingers before returning to bed and the only thing in life that truly mattered.

“You’ll always be safe, my love. Always,” she concluded, arms wrapped around her elegant waist, both hearts beating as one. Amanda sensed her warm body against hers, despite remaining in a peaceful trance. She dreamed of black wings cradling her softly until the sun rose again.
