The Edge of Sanity
Escape
by rose_nichols
Aria clawed her way back from unconsciousness with the same stubborn reluctance she'd once applied to waking for predawn conference calls. But here, there was no clock, no sunlight, nothing but the slow, wet throb that pulsed between her legs. The institutional cot beneath her already had a wet spot between her legs.
She was back in her room, which now felt more like a prison cell than living quarters. Aria rolled onto her side, flinched as the cheap hospital gown bunched at her hips, and pressed her thighs together until the muscle trembled. The pressure did nothing but remind her of her earlier ordeal of being stripped, spread, and rewired by the cold precision of Nurse Brown and the infernal chair. Even now, phantom echoes of suction and vibration haunted her skin, a chemical itch that lived beneath the flesh, past the reach of fingernails or reason.
She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to recall the logic that had once ruled her life: deadlines, relationships, the fragile hierarchy of wants and needs. But everything had been swept aside by the hot, tidal craving that still ruled her from navel to knee. Even in the aftermath, her body responded with betrayal, pooling more wetness between her thighs with each pulse, her clit a raw nerve shrieking for touch.
She still needed to cum. Even after everything she had endured, her arousal was unquenched. There was no lock on the door, but the room was empty and she was alone; no cameras that she could see. She drew her knees up, sliding one palm beneath the rough polyester sheet, and ran her hand up the inside of her thigh. Her skin was slippery, the sensation so immediate that she actually moaned out loud. The pad of her finger found her clit, which was so swollen and engorged it felt like an open wound, but with the first gentle circle she nearly sobbed in relief.
Her body bucked and shuddered, each brush of fingertip sending a bolt up her spine. She could feel it building, so close, closer than it had ever been, a high, keening hum at the base of her skull. She was going to come, she was sure of it, she had to. Her fingers moved faster, grinding against her clit with shameless force, legs splaying wider, toes curling in anticipation. It was right there—
The door slammed open.
Aria yanked her hand out, too slow, too late. She was still humping air, still leaking down her thigh when Nurse Brown entered, flanked by two new orderlies in navy scrubs. They paused at the threshold, Brown's lips puckered in distaste, the orderlies' faces carved from stone.
"Patient is non-compliant," Nurse Brown announced, voice carrying the cold satisfaction of a teacher catching a child in the act. "Document self-stimulation at 3:05 pm." She made a note on her tablet, then fixed Aria with a look that hovered between condescension and pity. "You were warned about this, Miss Wilson."
Aria scrambled upright, clutching the front of her gown. "You can't just barge in," she spat, but her voice cracked and the protest lost all momentum. Her hand was still sticky and the smell of her own need had nowhere to hide.
Nurse Brown's smile was thin, weaponized. "When a patient is a danger to herself, or actively undermining her own treatment, our protocol is very clear." She nodded to the orderlies, who advanced with measured steps, each movement telegraphed for maximum inevitability.
Aria tried to slide backward off the cot, but the orderlies closed in before she'd made it two feet. They easily held her down; Aria's strength was eroded by exhaustion, dehydration, and the aftershocks of the assessment. "Let go of me!" she snarled. "This is illegal! I'm not a fucking—"
"Careful, Miss Wilson," Nurse Brown warned, voice dripping with condescension. "Escalation is the first sign that the syndrome is progressing. You don't want to set back your recovery."
Nurse Brown produced, from a drawer at the base of the cot, a bundle of heavy white canvas. The straps dangled from it like tentacles, each with a burnished chrome buckle at the end, and the sight of it made Aria's mouth go dry. "This straitjacket is for your safety as much as ours," Brown said, advancing with the jacket folded over her forearm. "You'll find it relieves a surprising amount of anxiety."
Aria thrashed harder, but the orderlies only held her more tightly, tearing her gown off, and immobilizing her arms and legs so that Nurse Brown could slide the jacket onto her shoulders. Nurse Brown worked with methodical efficiency, first threading Aria's arms through the sleeves, then crisscrossing them over her chest and buckling them in place with a series of sharp, metallic snaps. With each buckle, Aria's range of motion shrank, until she could barely shift her hands a few inches in either direction.
Nurse Brown knelt, her face level with Aria's, and whispered, "It's easier if you relax." Aria bared her teeth and spat in the nurse's face.
She dabbed the spit from her cheek with a tissue, and her smile vanished from her lips. "I'll remember that. You're not in much of a position to be making enemies, Miss Wilson." The nurse's calm voice sent a chill down Aria's spine.
With the orderlies holding Aria immobile, Nurse Brown fanned out the jacket's lower hem and exposed the integrated crotch strap. It was not the quilted, apologetic sort found in a humane institution, but a rigid cup of smooth white polymer: molded, bulbous, seamless as a prosthetic limb.
The men holding her spread Aria's legs apart, exposing her splayed, saturated cunt to the frigid air.
Nurse Brown observed the glistening, swollen flesh in interest as Aria's cunt gaped shamelessly and her clit twitched beneath a film of clear mucus. She tsked with clinical disappointment, as if finding a toddler sticky from forbidden honey. "My my," she said, drawing out the syllables with a performative sadness. "It's as I feared: your self stimulation only intensified your condition."
With a small, precise motion, Nurse Brown pressed a gloved finger to the shining seam of Aria's sex, drawing out a keening moan from her patient. She collected a viscous string of slickness from the trembling cleft, and held the shimmering filament up to the light, watching it stretch and tremble, before bringing it to her tongue and tasting it with clinical detachment. "Delicious," she said, her eyes fixed on Aria's face all the while. "It's always so much more pronounced in the early stages."
Aria couldn't believe what she was seeing, but Nurse Brown was already moving on, folding the white shell of the crotch cup under Aria's pelvis and aligning it with practiced expertise, pinching the puffy lips together with her thumb to seat them perfectly inside the rigid hollow.
When everything was locked together, Aria realized she couldn't feel anything touching her vulva directly. The plate was hollow on the inside, shaped to cup her mound neatly, but its outer face offered nothing to press against, nothing to grind on. There were no seams, no gaps, not even a slight edge to catch on. It sealed her away from the world, every nerve ending on her pussy left to howl in a vacuum, untouched and untouchable.
The locking strap ran between her legs, cleaving her slit and hitching tight at the small of her back. The tension was exquisite: it held her open, yet denied even the faintest brush of cloth or motion. Worse, every time she twisted or flexed her hips, the smooth curve of the plate glided against her skin in a way that was maddeningly close to stimulation, but never resolved into anything but frustration and heat. Aria gasped, her face slack with the dawning horror of it.
"There," Nurse Brown said, brushing off her hands as if satisfied with an evening's tedious work. "Now. That's much better. You'll see, after a few days, the urges begin to abate. Or at least, you'll stop thinking about them so much."
Aria panted, her arms now mummified against her torso, chest heaving with the effort of even the smallest movement. The straitjacket's straps pressed her breasts together until they ached, and each twitch of her hips sent a fresh cascade of heat through her groin, where the need had not abated but only mutated into a gnawing, unscratchable itch.
"You're insane," she hissed, "you're all fucking—"
Nurse Brown raised a single finger, as though silencing a rude guest in her own parlor. "Enough. It's time for outdoor therapy; the rest of the patients will be waiting."
---
They took her through the main hall, to the rear entrance of the institute. As they walked, Aria started to feel another sensation on top of her normal arousal. At first, it was just the pressure, the subtle shift of the rigid cup as she walked. But as the orderlies guided her out into the corridor, Aria felt the heat and wetness start to accumulate, completely sealed inside the straitjacket's crotch panel.
The sealed cup transformed Aria's cunt into a hothouse. Every bead of sweat and drop of slick distilled inside until her skin burned with irritation. Her pubic mound pulsed with each step, the engorged flesh rubbing against the cup's interior. The itch became all-consuming, radiating outward, electrifying her thighs and arching her back in spasms. She couldn't distinguish between pressure and heat, between desperate want and physical torment; her world receded to that narrow channel, every nerve ending starved for touch.
Outside, the cool fresh air provided a welcome distraction from the swamp between Aria's legs. The other women were already on the patio, shifting foot to foot in their slippers and institutional gowns. Some stared at nothing, others eyed the floor, but all of them turned to stare at Aria as she was frog-marched to the lineup by the orderlies. The straitjacket, it seemed, was not an uncommon sight. The group regarded her with a mixture of sympathy and schadenfreude; Colleen's eyes darted from Aria's face to her hips and back again, while Sarah, the youngest, gave a wolfish grin and mimed a clapping motion in mock applause behind the orderlies' backs.
As she passed through the door to the grounds of the institution, Aria's heart sank as she realized there was a thick hedge acting as an enclosure to the grounds. It was tall enough to block the view of the road and thick enough to swallow any hope of squeezing through, save for the tight-lipped gates, always guarded by an orderly with the expression of a man silently counting down the hours till retirement.
Nurse Brown struck a path across the clipped grass, her hands folded behind her back like a tour guide marshaling school children. The women shuffled after, some with the mechanical bravado of sleepwalkers, others so evidently doped that their eyes seemed to film over between blinks. She began to narrate the grounds with a pep distinct from her earlier chill.
"This building, ladies, was originally the formal residence of the Blackwood family. Designed in 1862, it later served as a tuberculosis sanatorium, one of the first on the East Coast to admit female patients. If you follow the path, you'll see the original solarium up ahead, now used for group sessions and art therapy." She glanced over her shoulder, as though expecting a ripple of gratitude. "You're standing in a place of real history. Generations of women found relief here."
Most of the women listened to Nurse Brown's monologue, not out of rapt historical interest but because her voice was the only thing besides the wind that gave the day any shape. Aria, however, felt the tour graze the outer shell of her consciousness, barely registering the information as anything but soft white noise. She stared at the hedge, the green monotony of it, and pressed her thighs together with each miserable step.
The heat between her legs had become unbearable. The craving, denied even the palliative of friction, now built into a febrile, impossible pressure. She could feel the sweat and her own arousal pooling inside the straitjacket, slick and hot, seeping down the crease of her ass and feathering into the polyester lining. The sensation would have been mortifying if she weren't already past the reach of embarrassment. Her entire field of consciousness narrowed to the urge to rub, to grind, to hump against her throbbing, suffocated clit until her mind cleared.
After a few minutes of the agonizing tour, Aria finally spotted what she was looking for: a few meters ahead, where the hedge met an ornamental pillar, there was a seam. A break in the green wall, almost invisible unless you were looking at it from exactly the right angle. As the group rounded a corner, Aria waited until the orderlies were looking the other way, and stepped into the gap.
She ducked into the shadow of the hedge, her back against the wet, leafy wall, heart pounding so hard she was sure someone would hear. But no one called for her. After a few seconds of silence, she started pressing through the leafy branches.
The first layer was pliant and leafy, but soon Aria's progress was arrested by a sprawl of rigid twigs and a haze of dry, thorny detritus. She twisted, working her shoulder against the seam, teeth bared as she pushed her left foot into a patch of mossy stone for leverage. The mass of branches fought back with the indifference of engineered nature, snagging the straitjacket's sleeve and raking her thigh through the thin cotton. "Come on," she hissed, spittle flecking her lips.
It was the hope, more than the pain, that drove her harder. She levered her body sideways, scraping her cheek and her shoulder against wet bark, until her body finally slipped free. Bleeding and panting, she emerged from a jagged gap at the base of the stone pillar, the straitjacket's canvas streaked green from the broken leaves. She looked around, and realized she was in an overgrown service road on the backside of the building.
The taste of freedom was so sweet. With no alarms or sirens to indicate a search party, Aria started running towards the main road. She needed to put as much distance between her and the institution as possible.
---
She hadn't even made it a mile before her body betrayed her.
It started as a flutter in her chest, a subtle vibration that spread down her ribcage and into the hollow between her legs. She tried to focus on the rough asphalt under her bare feet, but every few strides her knees threatened to buckle, her hips grinding involuntarily, the ghost of the jacket still squeezing her clit with every flex. Each inhalation was loaded with the wet, rank odor of sweat and terror, her own scent spiking with each pulse of adrenaline and need.
Already the twilight was pooling beneath the trees, a bruised and heavy blue that thickened the world into shapes and smells more than sights. The further Aria fled from the institution, the more the day seemed to crack and drain of light. Her excitement from the escape had been replaced by the realization she wasn't going to make it far on foot. Suddenly, farther down the road, she spied a bright light.
Thank god. A car.
She saw it coming from a quarter mile away, blue-and-white strobes reflecting off the trees. She realized it was a police cruiser, and her heart leapt with joy. She was saved!
Aria didn't hesitate. She burst from the tree line directly into the beam of the cruiser's headlights, before realizing the car was much closer than she had anticipated. The brakes screamed, and the car fishtailed, slewing sideways with a splatter of loose gravel and panic. It skidded to a stop an arm's length away, and Aria stood illuminated in the headlights.
A uniformed officer stepped out, one hand resting on his service belt, brow furrowed, assessing the situation. Aria staggered forward, her bare feet bleeding on the pebbled shoulder.
"Ma'am, are you all right?" the cop called, voice torn between concern and protocol.
Aria's mouth worked soundlessly. What came out was a raw, fractured gasp. "Please. Please help. They're—" She broke off, her body wracked by a wave of arousal. Doubling over with her hands on her knees, Aria tried to pass off the response as nausea.
The deputy was out of the car in an instant, boots crunching the gravel. He had a hand on his sidearm, but the look on his face was all caution, not aggression. He circled behind her, keeping a safe distance.
"Ma'am, I need you to stay calm. Tell me what's going on."
She was able to stand straight again, and looked up at him, eyes streaming. "I'm— I'm being held against my will. It's the—" she searched for the name, panic making her mind skip and stutter, "Blackwood Institute. Please, they're drugging us, they—" Her words caught on another spasm, falling to her knees as her pussy clenched around nothing. She could see the concern across the deputy's face.
He knelt beside her, one hand hovering just above her shoulder. "Are you hurt? Do you need medical attention?"
"They won't let us," she whispered. "They won't let us finish. I can't think, I can't—" The train of thought derailed once again.
The deputy hesitated, then clicked his radio. "Dispatch, I've got a 10-96, white female, mid-twenties, possibly hypothermic. Copy?"
A woman's voice replied in a burst of static: "Copy, 10-96. Do you need backup?"
"Negative," he said, not taking his eyes off Aria.
He holstered his radio, then looked her over with something almost like pity. "Can you walk?"
She nodded, unable to speak.
He led her to the back seat of the cruiser, opened the door, and helped her in. The seat was plastic, cold and slick beneath her bare skin, but it was the first moment of safety she'd felt in days. The deputy handed her a scratchy wool blanket, which she wrapped around her shoulders.
As the car pulled away, the officer looked at her in the rear view mirror with concern.
"My name's Deputy Allen. Can you tell me your name?"
"Aria," she whispered.
"Aria, you said you're from Blackwood Institute. What happened?"
She clutched the blanket tighter, digging her nails into her own arms to keep from shaking. "It's not a real hospital. They say it's a wellness center, but it's—" She shuddered. "They lock you in, drug you, make you… do things." Her cheeks burned, but she forced herself to keep going. "They say it's an illness, but it's not. It's them. They're making us sick on purpose."
She wanted to be still and behave, but her hips had a life of their own, bucking and rolling against the plastic seat as if some primitive animal inside her refused to die. The blanket shifted with every movement, baring the white plastic of her jacket's crotch strap, the edges oozing a mixture of fluids.
The deputy kept glancing at Aria, eyes flicking from road to mirror, road to mirror, as the strange girl squirmed and whimpered in the back seat.
"What were you saying before?" he asked, "About not finishing?"
She pressed her head to the window, cold glass beading her breath, but couldn't find a way to will her hips still. "It's part of the treatment," she said, her voice thick and wet. "They just force you to the edge, over and over! It's horrible!"
"I'm sorry ma'am; the edge of what?" The cop asked with genuine confusion.
Her heart jackhammered. She wanted to explain in clear, clinical language what had happened to her, but she couldn't find the words. The shame was so thick it nearly suffocated her. The deputy watched her in the mirror, waiting expectantly.
Aria's lips moved, but nothing came out. The her pride swelled, then broke: "The edge of— of orgasm. They won't let us cum." The phrase that had haunted her every waking hour since admission, spoken now in a stranger's car, sounded obscene and impossible. "They—" her jaw trembled, "they drugged me, and tortured me. With machines. Over and over. And then they won't let me finish." Her body compressed around the restraint, her hips rocking with a desperate, involuntary rhythm. "I thought I was losing my mind," she finished, voice dissolving into high-pitched laughter. "But it's them! You have to help—"
The car jolted over a pothole, and Aria physically recoiled as the jarring motion pressed the jacket even tighter into her sex. She whimpered, teeth bared, as the feeling overwhelmed her.
Deputy Allen had heard every kind of story in his years on the graveyard shift: paranoid meth-heads with bugs under their skin, old men certain the neighbors were surveiling them through the TV, even the occasional wealthy housewife convinced the air in her subdivision was being poisoned. This, though, was a first.
He looked into the rearview mirror again. "Did they hurt you physically? Any bruises or injuries I should know about?"
Aria shook her head. "Not— not like that. It's what they do to your mind." She bit her lip. "Please, I can't stand it! Could you get me out of this jacket?"
The officer shook his head, "Let's just get you to safety first, okay? We'll have a nurse take a look, maybe get you something for the anxiety."
Aria nodded, but her face was already wet with shame, slicked with tears and the aftertaste of panic and hunger. The shivers in her legs had translated into a constant, arrhythmic twitch of her knees, squeezing and flexing in the straitjacket's forced half-embrace. She could not remember ever wanting anything so acutely as the simple end of this feeling. She pressed her forehead to the cold car window and tried to focus on the dizzy blur of passing trees.
She could not bear to look at the officer, and they rode in silence for a while. After several more minutes, the car slowed to a stop. She saw the sign before she saw the building: Blackwood Institute for Women's Wellness, gold letters on a navy background, just visible in the headlights. Aria screamed.
"No! No, no, no— You said the hospital!"
The deputy parked, killed the engine, and turned to face her, hands open and empty. "Ma'am, you're clearly not in your right mind. These people know how to help with your condition."
The back door unlocked with a heavy, mechanical click. Aria recoiled into the far corner, fusing herself to the hard plastic, knees drawn up protectively. Deputy Allen opened the door anyway, squatted to her level, and tried to project a calm reassurance that did not touch the tired lines of his face.
"Ma'am," he said, "I need you to come with me. You're not safe out here."
She shook her head, teeth bared, the motion more animal than rational. "You don't understand— Please! Please don't take me back there. I'm begging you!" Her eyes darted from the institutional facade looming beyond the cruiser, to the blank darkness of the treeline. "Anywhere but there." Her voice was high with panic.
Allen's patience was finite, and this night had already run through more than its share. He reached in, arms strong and practiced, and tried to coax her out by the crook of her elbows. She thrashed, tried to kick at him, but her legs were hobbled by the straitjacket and her own exhaustion. The deputy grimaced, then lifted her bodily from the back seat, the canvas scraping his forearms, her bare feet paddling at the night air.
As he carried her towards the large double doors of the institute, Aria realized that she was really going back. He was almost to the door when Aria, in a voice so ragged it startled them both, pleaded, "Wait. Please—wait, just a second—" Her body wriggled spasmodically in his grip, knees pressed together as if she could physically dam the need threatening to rupture her from the inside out. The deputy hesitated; she really did seem distressed. He stopped, repositioning her, and Aria's face twisted into a desperate hunger.
"Please," she said again. "Before you take me back. Let me— just let me finish. Please. You don't understand—" Her head lolled against his shoulder, voice plummeting to a whisper, "I can't think. I need it so bad it hurts!" She was crying, now, tears hot on her cheeks. "I don't care if you watch— I need to cum, just once!"
The deputy was entirely unnerved, and realized his hands were shaking. He was aware of her, of Aria, in ways that made his skin crawl and his mind recoil. The way she writhed, the raw hunger in her voice, the slick heat soaking through the jacket where their bodies made contact. For a moment, the air was thick with something he would have called shame, if he'd had the words for it; shame for the institution, shame for the system, shame that his own body responded, pricked with a pulse of half-buried want.
He was sorely tempted to give in to her request; to set her down right there on the concrete and let her claw her way to whatever mercy waited at the end of her desperation. But the rules were the rules, and he had never been a man who broke them, not once once in twenty years, and certainly not for a sick girl like this. Instead, he gripped her tighter, as if the proximity alone would hide the blood rushing to his cock. His voice was gruff, the only part of him not trembling: "I'm sorry. I can't." He started toward the doors, gaze fixed ahead, jaw clenched with the effort of ignoring her heaving, shivering need.
She sobbed against the wool, hot breath fogging the collar of his uniform. He felt the tears soak through, and something inside him broke, crushed by the weight of the guilt he felt. He whispered, almost to himself, "I'm just trying to help. They'll take care of you. I promise."
---
The lobby seemed harsher than the first time Aria had entered it. Nurse Brown was already there, as if she had been waiting since the moment Aria fled. She stood behind the front desk, hands folded, a motherly expression on her face.
The cop's face bunched in relief, the way men do when a problem is not theirs anymore. "Brought your patient back," he said, depositing Aria, still in her straitjacket, into a waiting wheelchair. "Found her on County Road 3, about a mile south."
Nurse Brown accepted custody of Aria with grace and appreciation. She nodded at Deputy Allen. "Thank you for your help, Deputy. We'll make sure it doesn't happen again."
The officer hovered at the threshold of the door, hands jammed into his belt, his discomfort visible in the way his eyes kept flitting to the straitjacket. "She, ah…" His voice faltered, and he looked back at Aria, whose head lolled on the vinyl back of the wheelchair, eyes squeezed shut in abject misery. "She said some things. Claims of abuse, of being drugged. You know how it is, I'm sure— but she seemed…" He struggled for the word that weren't accusatory. "She seemed pretty out of it. More than just the usual."
Nurse Brown's smile was gentle, almost moist with empathy. "Of course, Deputy. Aria's illness manifests as paranoid delusions, as well as some uncomfortable physiological symptoms. If you're worried about her, however, you can visit her any time you like."
This satisfied Allen, who hastily said his goodbyes and left the building. Nurse Brown watched him through the glass until his cruiser pulled away, then turned her attention to the ruined girl leaking tears and grool into her wheelchair.
"Running away? After everything we've done to help you, Aria?"
Aria looked up at Nurse Brown hopelessly, vision blurred by tears as she continued.
"This is the only place you can get better, Aria. Deputy Allen knows that, I know that, and deep, deep inside that dripping cunt of yours, you know that too."
