Home at ten-thirty. Emily pays the cab while I get the keys. Inside, the house quiet - Jenna on the sofa with her phone, the monitor on the coffee table showing Theo's breathing steady and slow.

"He went down at nine," Jenna says. "Took the bottle fine."

Emily thanks her and counts out cash and I wait by the door. When Jenna's gone Emily sets the monitor to low and looks at the stairs.

"He'll wake in a few hours," she says. Not a complaint. Just the math of it, working out what the night holds. She takes her shoes off at the bottom of the stairs.

---

The dress comes off first - Emily's hands at the hem, lifting, the fabric clearing my head. The shoes already gone at the door. The room warm after the January street, and I stand in the bedroom in the red silk bra and the black underwear and Emily looks at me for a moment before she reaches for her own zip.

I do it for her. The tab down her spine, the dress falling, and then she's standing in her slip and I can see what the evening's clothes have been containing - her breasts fuller than they were before the pregnancy and still fuller now, the nursing having made them dense and heavy, a breast pad visible through the slip on the left side where she's leaked slightly in the cab. She looks down, sees it, peels the pad away with the pragmatic unselfconsciousness of someone who has been doing this for six weeks.

She looks up at me. Something in her expression is private.

"Still okay?" I say.

"Yes," she says. Then: "Don't be gentle."

Her hands come to my back and she works the clasp of the bra - she gets it on the first attempt, which I haven't managed yet - and the band releases and she eases the straps off my shoulders. The underwire has left its mark, a faint red line under each breast where the wire has sat for the past four hours. She runs her thumb along the line on the left side and I exhale, small and involuntary, the relief of a structured bra coming off after a long evening. She notes the sound. She sets the bra on the chair and comes back.

She takes her time. This is different from the early months, when everything was urgent and slightly frantic. Now she moves with the deliberateness of someone who has been learning the geography for ten months and knows which routes are worth taking slowly. But underneath the deliberateness something else - the want of a woman who has been at the edge of her own body for six weeks, bleeding and pumping and latching and healing, and has decided that tonight this body is hers to want something for.

Her mouth at my collarbone, my throat, the soft skin below my ear. Her hand flat against my sternum, feeling my heartbeat. I have my hands in her hair and I'm looking at the ceiling and the dress on the chair and the city sounds outside the window, the ordinary January night continuing without us.

Her mouth moves to my breast and I stop looking at anything.

The underwire has been pressing the tissue for three hours and she finds the tenderness along the lower curve immediately - her mouth light there first, then less light. My back arches before I decide to arch it.

She pauses. Lifts her head.

"Tell me if-"

"Don't stop," I say.

Her hand slides down my stomach, over the curve of the hip, fingers finding the waistband of the black silk. "These are nice," she says.

"Your idea," I say.

She smiles against my ribs and pulls them down.

Her fingers find me already wet - the ovulation, the evening, the cab ride, all of it here together. The curl she's learned, her thumb in the way that short-circuits everything above the neck. I come faster than I intend to, hips lifting off the mattress, and following the orgasm the uterine contractions - the deep interior clenching, not alarming, the body doing what it does. I know this sequence. I ride it out.

When it passes I reach toward the nightstand - the harness is coiled there, its use habitual at this point. Emily catches my wrist.

"No," she says. Her eyes find mine in the low light. "Not tonight."

She holds my gaze for a moment and then she moves down my body.

Her tongue finds my clit and I stop understanding anything at all. It doesn't build the way the first orgasm built - it simply comes, without warning, a wave that starts at the base of my spine and moves outward, my hips jerking against her mouth, my hands in her hair not directing, just holding on.

The uterine contractions follow again, stronger this time. I make a sound into the ceiling.

She doesn't stop.

"Too much," I manage.

She eases back but doesn't stop, the touch lighter, working me through the hypersensitivity until the shaking eases and I can breathe again. Then she moves back up my body and her mouth finds mine. I can taste myself on her lips.

She reaches for the dildo. What follows takes a while to calibrate - it always does, the leverage awkward until it isn't - and then it works, the shared motion producing a feedback loop that has us both breathing differently within minutes. When I reach up and pull her down her weight presses everything deeper and she gasps against my throat. The orgasm when it comes is deeper than either of the ones before it, the uterine contractions moving through me and leaving my legs shaking. Emily follows a few strokes later, her whole body tensing against mine.

We stay like that for a moment, both of us breathing.

She rolls to the side. The room warm and close, the smell of sex and the remnants of her perfume. She's pressed against my side, her leg over mine. I lie there with my heart rate coming down, the uterine contractions winding into a dull ache low in my abdomen. I get up and go to the bathroom, then look at myself in the mirror for a moment. The makeup mostly gone, mascara smudged under my eyes. My hair pushed up on one side. The marks on my skin where her hands have been.

I get the heating pad from the closet and plug it in and bring it back to bed, pressing it low against my abdomen. The heat is immediate.

Emily watches me arrange it and shifts to accommodate the cord without being asked. Then she reaches over and unclips her nursing bra from the nightstand where she hung it before we left, and puts it on in the dark with the practiced automatic motion of six weeks of middle-of-the-night feeds. The breast pads in. She settles back against me.

We lie there. Outside the ordinary January night continues - a car somewhere, the building settling. The monitor on the nightstand, Theo's breathing a steady green line.

The thought comes the way it does at this point in the month - the ovulation, the fertile window, the particular combination of biology in this moment. I could get pregnant. The thought sits there with its full weight.

Emily's circles slow on my hip. Her breathing is changing.

"You okay?" she says, quietly, into the dark.

"Yeah," I say.

And I mean it.

---

The jeans I wore last week don't button this morning.

Not dramatically - they get halfway and stop, the waistband cutting into the soft swell of low abdomen that comes reliably at this point in the month. I put them back and take out the other pair, the ones with the wider waist I bought last spring after my first period. They button without protest. The new compression bra goes on next, correctly fitted, the band sitting where it should. Functional, flat, invisible under the dress shirt.

I open the drawer where the black silk underwear has been since Emily washed them after the oyster bar. I look at them for a moment. Then I pick them up and put them on.

The silk settles against my labia the way it did the first time. I pull the jeans up over them. Button the shirt, knot the tie. A man going to work. More or less.

The commute is ordinary. The pre-period threshold is lower than usual - the traffic slightly more irritating than it deserves, the coffee from the pot slightly too hot - and I know this for what it is, a weather system rather than a reaction to specific events, and I note it and open my email.

Dave drops the Beaumont files on my desk at nine and I say thanks and he says you're welcome and that's the whole of it. The files are what they are. I work through them.

At eleven I shift in my chair and the silk moves, the fabric finding its way into the cleft of my labia and settling there. I reach down and make the adjustment through the denim, a small private correction, and sit for a moment with the new information before it subsides into background. I think about the oyster bar. The cold air outside and Emily's hand on my hip and the cab ride home and what came after.

---

At two I go to conference room B for my performance review.

It's the small one at the end of the hall, four chairs and a table, the window looking out onto the building across the street. January still, the sky the flat white of a city afternoon in deep winter. Linda closes the door and we sit across from each other and she opens her folder.

The review is formal for the first ten minutes - the standard structure, the competency ratings, the self-evaluation responses. Linda goes through it with the efficiency she brings to everything, her pen moving, her questions precise. I answer them. The Aldermere account. The Beaumont close. The Sarah planning session, the CFO nodding, the campaign assets she requested. The Q2 framework.

Linda closes the folder.

She looks at me across the table with the specific quality of attention I've come to recognize over the past year - not the HR attention, not the careful professional regard, but the way she looks at me when she's about to say something that exists outside the formal structure of whatever we're doing.

"The agency is creating a new senior account director position," she says. "Effective Q2. Your name is on it."

I look at her.

"Beaumont and Aldermere both renew under you," she says. "Sarah Chen asked for you specifically in the Q2 planning session. The CFO of Aldermere sent an email to the managing director after your last call." She pauses. "I'm not supposed to tell you that last part."

Outside the window a January afternoon sits over the building across the street. In the conference room the heat comes through the vents with a faint metallic smell. The silk underwear presses against the seat of my jeans, the private knowledge of it sitting exactly where it's been sitting all day.

Senior account director. The title I was on track for before March, the trajectory that the year derailed, or seemed to derail, or that I assumed had been derailed by everything I've been managing since the morning I woke up and the world was different.

"Okay," I say.

Linda looks at me for a moment. "That's it? Okay?"

"What do you want me to say?"

"Most people say thank you."

"Thank you," I say.

She closes the folder and the corner of her mouth moves. Not quite a smile, but the thing adjacent to it. She's looking at me the way she's looked at me periodically since October - the full picture, whatever she's assembled of it, the things she knows and the things she's decided not to ask about and the things she's expressed through chamomile tea and spare leggings and a steady, non-negotiable presence.

"You had a hard year," she says. Simple. Declarative. Not a question and not an invitation, just a fact offered across the table.

"Yeah," I say.

She nods once and stands and picks up the folder. "Q2 announcement is March. Keep it to yourself until then. We'll work through details later this week."

---

I sit in the conference room for a moment after she leaves.

March. The announcement in March, which is when the year started. The body changing in March, the first morning, the razor and the mirror and Emily's voice through the bathroom door. The work continuing through all of it, the client relationships holding, the competence intact under everything that was happening to the body that was carrying it.

I press my palm flat against my lower abdomen, where the pre-period heaviness is sitting today - the dull familiar weight, the body in its preparatory phase, winding toward the bleed that will come in another week and then the reset, the cycle beginning again. The silk underwear against my skin. The compression bra doing its work. The dress shirt and the tie and the jeans that button now because I bought a second pair in the spring because I learned what this week required.

The window. The ordinary Tuesday afternoon.
