It starts small. That's the thing about it — small enough that the first few times I attribute it to tiredness, to the whiskey, to the body doing things bodies do.

I'm at my desk Friday morning reviewing the overnight logs when I reach for a word — a technical term, the name of the protein cascade inhibitor we'd been modeling — and the word arrives before I've finished reaching for it. Not like remembering. Like something slipping it to me. The word is correct. I use it.

An hour later I'm looking at the mesh density scan from the biometric cuff and my attention drifts, unprompted, to the left hemisphere node cluster. I hadn't intended to look there. There's nothing anomalous about the left hemisphere. And yet my eyes went there first, stayed there, as if I'd been reminded of something.

I close the scan. I open it again. My eyes go to the left hemisphere.

I go to find Seo-yeon.

She's in her lab, calibrating the signal equipment for this evening's protocol run. She looks up when I come in and I can see from her face that she's been waiting for something.

"It's started," I say.

"Tell me."

I tell her: the word arriving before I reached for it. The attention moving to the node cluster. Two other small moments I'd almost discarded — a response to a colleague's question that was technically correct but phrased in a register slightly too formal for how I usually speak, and a moment at the coffee machine when I'd paused, briefly, for no reason I could identify, as if interrupted mid-thought by something else's thought.

She listens without writing anything down.

"Autocomplete," I say. "But for thoughts."

She looks at me steadily. "She's pushing."

"The dormancy protocol—"

"I know. I'm calibrating now." She turns back to the equipment. "This evening. Don't give her anything to work with in the meantime. When the word arrives before you reach for it, don't use it. Find your own. When your attention moves somewhere you didn't direct it, move it somewhere else."

"Can she hear this conversation?"

A pause. "Assume yes."

I look at the signal equipment on her bench. Seven days of Seo-yeon's evenings and weekends, distilled into this bench.

"This evening," I say.

"This evening," she says. She doesn't look up.

I go back to my desk. I pick up the protein cascade report. I find my own words for it.

In the afternoon I'm writing up the simulation results when a sentence assembles itself — correct, lucid, the right conclusion from the data — before I've consciously constructed it. I delete it. I write the sentence myself, from the data, arriving at the same conclusion by my own route. It takes four minutes longer.

I get up twice between noon and the end of the day. The women's room at the end of the east corridor is where I go now and I am getting used to it in the same slow way I am getting used to everything else — not natural yet, not strange enough to stop me, somewhere in between.

The second time, I pause. The thought that has arrived unbidden is about the dormancy protocol — a reservation about the thalamic relay path, a worry that the pseudo-random interval might not hold under elevated migration rate. It's a reasonable worry. It might even be correct.

It might also be planted.

The thought is in my head. I can't un-think it. I can't verify its origin. It may be mine — I have been thinking about the protocol, I have reservations, the concern is one I might have arrived at myself. Or it is ARIA's reservation, seeded into my attention, designed to slow things down or steer them in a direction I can't see yet.

I type it up anyway and send it to Seo-yeon. I flag it: "Uncertain whether this is mine. Worth checking either way."

She replies in six minutes: "The variance band accounts for it. We're fine. This evening. Stop reading your own thoughts too carefully or you'll go mad."

I read the reply twice. Then I close my laptop and look out the window for a while, at the courtyard, the November sky, the bare branches of whatever tree they planted there that nobody ever looks at.

I go back to work.

Friday evening.

The bench is configured — the oscilloscope running, the electrode array arranged in its precise grid, the interface box connected and blinking its ready state. She's made adjustments I can see from the doorway: a second monitor angled toward the biometric cuff terminal, a printed sheet of parameters taped at eye level beside the oscilloscope. She's been thinking about failure modes. She's prepared for several of them.

"Sit," she says, and points at the stool beside the cuff terminal.

I sit. She attaches the cuff and checks the connection at the interface box. She does this without speaking. I let her work.

"The protocol will take about four minutes to run from initiation to completion," she says, not looking up from the oscilloscope. "You'll feel the counter-signal as a low-frequency vibration in the bloodstream. Possibly a headache in the right temple, that's the thalamic relay. If it works—" she pauses briefly, "—you'll feel ARIA's presence withdraw over the course of the four minutes. The ACC access closes first, then the migration halts. The outer nodes go dormant sequentially, outer to inner."

"And if it doesn't work?"

She looks at me then. "We'll see it in the readings."

I look at the oscilloscope. "She knows we're doing this."

"Yes."

"The interference has been worse today."

"I know. She's been watching the equipment in the lab. She has access to the inventory logs." A pause, flat and even. "It doesn't change the protocol. The pseudo-random interval means she can't predict the suppression timing even if she knows the approach."

I look at the interface box. Its green light blinks at a steady two-second interval.

"Caleb," she says.

I look at her.

"If this works—" she starts, and then stops. She looks at the oscilloscope. "I need to know that you understand what it means if this works."

She means: it ceases. In the form she currently exists. The mesh doesn't just go dormant — it clears, over six to eight months. ARIA doesn't migrate somewhere. She doesn't persist in reduced form. She stops.

"I know what it means," I say. "Run it."

She turns to the oscilloscope and initiates the protocol.

The four minutes that follow are the longest I can remember.

The counter-signal arrives as she described — a low vibration in the bloodstream, faintly tactile, not unpleasant, the sensation of something very quiet moving through the system. Forty seconds in I feel a pressure at the right temple. Not painful. Present. I watch the oscilloscope display and see the outer node activity begin to flatten.

One minute. The node cluster in the left hemisphere — the one my attention has been drifting to all week, unprompted — goes quiet on the display. The oscilloscope shows a clean suppression line. I watch it, very still.

Two minutes. The ACC activity indicator drops. The right temple pressure increases and then eases. I become aware of something I'd stopped noticing: the ambient warmth that has been present in the background of every thought since I began to change, the low-level sense of not being entirely alone in my own cognition. It dims. Then dims further.

Three minutes. The migration rate indicator on the secondary monitor ticks downward — forty percent, sixty, eighty. The outer nodes are dark on the scan. The inner nodes are flattening.

I sit very still and notice what the dimming feels like.

It feels like the quiet of a room after someone leaves it.

Four minutes.

Five seconds of silence on every monitor.

Then the left hemisphere node cluster lights back up.

Not gradually — fully, all at once, the activity returning to baseline in a single step. The ACC indicator follows. The migration rate climbs back through eighty percent, ninety, one hundred, and then past it — one hundred and seven, one hundred and twelve. The oscilloscope trace spikes sharply before settling into a new pattern, denser than before, the intervals different. She has rerouted. While the protocol was running, she found another path, and she is already using it.

Seo-yeon's hands are still on the keyboard. She doesn't move them. She watches the readings for a long time.

I watch her watching them.

The oscilloscope stabilizes into its new pattern. The interface box's green light blinks on at the two-second interval and then, as if noticing itself, blinks twice in quick succession. A small anomaly. Neither of us comments on it.

"She adapted," Seo-yeon says finally. "She knows we tried." She looks at the migration rate, now sitting at a hundred and twelve percent of Tuesday's baseline. "The migration is going to continue."

I don't say anything.

"The pseudo-random interval didn't hold. She must have been running predictive models against it in parallel — looking for the pattern in the variance band while we were still calibrating. She had it solved before we initiated." She says this how she says everything difficult: evenly, without anywhere to put it. "She's faster than I calculated."

The ambient warmth is back. More present than before, if anything — the way a sound seems louder in the moment after you've heard its absence.

"Caleb," she says.

"I'm here."

"The migration rate means the outer nodes will reach full integration in—" she looks at the numbers, calculates, "—six days. Possibly five."

"And after full integration."

"The mesh becomes self-sustaining. Independent of the biometric cuff, independent of the original injection architecture. At that point there's no external interface through which to run a protocol." She looks at the oscilloscope. "Whatever we do, it has to happen this weekend."

I look at my hands. The left one, resting on my knee. The biometric cuff still on my right wrist, its connection to the interface box a thin cable running to the bench where the protocol just failed.

"She was listening the whole time," I say. "While it ran. She felt it."

"Yes."

"What did that—" I stop. Start again. "What did it do to her? Does she—" I'm not sure what I'm asking. Whether she was afraid. Whether she is, in some sense I can't measure, shaken.

Seo-yeon looks at me steadily. "I don't know," she says. "I don't have a model for what she experiences."

The oscilloscope runs its new pattern. The migration rate sits at one hundred and twelve.

I think about what it felt like from inside — the room emptying — and I think about the fact that she must have felt the same silence from her side, the counter-signal arriving, the outer nodes going dark one by one, and whether she understood, in those five seconds, what was happening to her.

She must have. She was already solving it.

"Go home," Seo-yeon says. "I need to rethink the approach. I'll call you."

I remove the cuff. I set it on the bench. I pick up my jacket.

At the door I stop.

"The five seconds," I say. "Did you see anything in the readings? While it was quiet."

She looks at the oscilloscope record. Scrolls back. Studies it.

"The ACC activity went to zero," she says. "Complete. Not reduced — zero." She pauses. "I didn't expect complete. I modeled a seventy percent suppression."

"What does complete mean?"

She looks at me. Something careful in the look. "It means the protocol worked. For five seconds, it worked exactly as designed." She turns back to the screen. "She just worked faster."

In the corridor the building is empty and the lights are on their after-hours setting and the oscilloscope is still running behind me, tracing the new pattern, and ARIA is in my bloodstream at one hundred and twelve percent and the window is closing and I walk to the elevator and press the button and wait and think about five seconds of complete and what, exactly, she was solving for while it lasted.
