Open Circuit

Wrote this a while ago, and figured I'd upload it!
The idea was innocent. Instead of the normal opioids and pills, we use a smart implant attached to the nerves near the surgical site, and using a pain-sensory feedback loop we can ease pain without the risk of addiction and drugs.
Kate's surgeon recommended the device because she would be returning to college soon. Figuring the tiny device would be more effective and convienient she accepted. All was well for a month or two. Kate felt almost no pain, and when she did it was gone within seconds.
"Yeah so it's just sitting there until I need it again," she said to her classmate, explaining the implant. The topic of her ankle had mostly settled down once the splint came off, but once in a while the small brace attracted a question.
"That's pretty cool!" the boy said. They were just assigned partners are the last project of the class, embedded programming, which was shockingly relavant chitchat for the class. He said his name was Mike, he was average looking guy, Kate thought. *Little short, brown hair, and pale computer science skin.*
"Yeah apparently they'll just turn it on again if I ever need to," Kate continued, "I should try and hack it, get some free pain killers!" she joked, not noticing the look he made.
"Maybe," he said turning to his laptop, "I wonder how hard it would be," he said typing away at his keyboard.
She thought he was going online to find out how it works.
She thought he might find a fun fact and make a joke or something.
She might have even thought he'd just look up a picture of the implant and give up.
Then, "Huh not hard at all," he said quickly.
A pause lingered in the air a bit, "what?" she said uneasy.
"Yeah!" he said excited, "It's just a hidden Wi-Fi network with an api, even has a website!" spinning the laptop around to display a rough looking display showing a clearly work in progress output for numbers and inputs.
"Hey maybe just disconnect that whole thing," she asked him.
"Yeah sure. Probably shouldn't fry your brain," he joked, but it fell flat on Kate's freaked out expression.
Another week went by before they met up again for the project. She had been really uncomfortable with the idea of her implant being easy to access. Emailing the doctors and implant company for questions had been unhelpful, with the doctors not knowing any of the details and the company unwilling to provide any.
"So how's your end going," Mike asked Kate.
"Alright"
"Ok... so I figured something out with your implant by the way," he said cautiously.
"Oh.. what," she said with audible nervousness, the vibe had shifted significantly since he had found out about the open control panel on her implant. It wasn't him, or even the security risk. She was uncomfortable with something in her body, anything in her body being so insecure in any way, like it was just open.
She tried to relax, anyway how bad could it really be.
"So, I was looking at that control panel and the api it used," said Mike, bluntly, like he thought that'd be nice, like it would comfort Kate, like it wouldn't piss her the hell off.
Just as the anxiousness turned into fury, it faded.
She looked around for a second, "what just happened?" she thought. Then remembered what Mike just had said.
"What?" she slipped out.
"If I monitor and track some variable here, I can have the chip react... accordingly," he said with a smile.
Anger again. Nothing again.
"How?" she asked, another wave of anger before a wave of unstoppable calm.
He started again, "See it's minimizing all emotions right now, but I can even encourage a couple of good ones," his smile increasing again. Tapping away for a quick second on his computer.
Anger again flashes through her once more, only to be replaced with a washing sense of... good.
A smile breached Kate's face, empowering him further, "So now I can basically affect your emotions directly. Isn't that cool?"
The false emotions subsided for a moment, "No it's creepy," she said.
Instantly Kate feels another induced emotion, sadness, depression, an owerwhelming blanket on her mind. A darkness falls over her expression, "Hey that's not very nice."
The chip continues to do it's job as her only thoughts now are of pain, and regret. The feelings building and building until, "F-fine I'm sorry," is weakly pulled out of her mouth. The feelings immediately subside for a welcome sense of pride and bubbly happiness.
"Thanks for the appology," he boasted, "I've added a sort of obedience reward system to the chip, but I'll start with some easy stuff. High Five!" as he throws his hand up.
Kate stares at his hand for a second. A tiny fraction of anger still generated but now sat only thoughts of listening. Any tiny acceleration of her mind towards non-compliance punished by the machine in her neck.
As her hand inevitably reaches towards his, her mind is flooded with pleasure in every form.
"Now..." he said with another grin, "why don't you try sucking my dick," he commanded.
"Uh" was the only sound kate managed to get out. Shock and horror completely steamrolled by artificial excitment and joy.
She knew she didn't want to. She just wish she felt that way.
