I am not in trance. But I am in trance. The routine is built into my mind as deeply as Her programming, and I follow it.
I take the violin from the stand and check the tuning. Adjust the A slightly. The E could be a bit tighter. I put the shoulder rest on, then lay it on the cushion. I reach for the bow. Tighten two turns. Pick up the rosin. Glide it up and down the horsehair, back and forth.
I return the rosin to the case. I raise the violin to my shoulder, nestling my cheek into the rest like a lover. My hand shifts to hold the neck, and I take a slow, deep breath.
I start with scales, drawing the bow back and forth as my fingers slide and shift along the neck, the notes rising and falling as my eyes slide closed. Keeping my shoulders loose, my posture straight.
When I finish warming up I take a moment to let the sound fade, then begin the piece I have been practicing for my recital. It is a simple pentatonic folk song, the fingering basic but it has a simple clarity and sweetness that I have loved as I re-learned the instrument.
My eyes open as I finish the coda, and this time I look at the music stand. The Mozart piece I will perform next is there, and I start to practice. I make mistakes. I go back. I miss my fingering. I try again.
It is not as smooth or sweet, but it gets a bit better each time.
When the ache in my fingers and shoulders tell me it is time to stop, I take the violin down and set it back on the cushion. I loosen the bow, and place it on the hook. I remove the shoulder pad, and return the instrument to the stand. I make sure it is all put away properly.
I stand, shaking out my hands a bit, and go to the bathroom. I draw a cup of water, and swallow an ibuprofen. When I come out, Goddess is watching me from the bed.
"That was beautiful, pet."
Blushing, I thank her and slip into bed to cuddle for a bit. I still have time before work needs me back, and I set an alarm on my watch just to be safe before her warmth and her scent draws me back down into blankness.
