CW: Hivemind, objectification, depersonalization.

It dreams in song. It wakes in song.

The gentle murmurs of thoughts fill it’s awareness as it opens its eyes, looking at the others nestled around it. Bodies wrapped around each other, chests rising and falling, minds quiet.

Gently extracting itself, it washes and dresses, listening to instructions and feeling the flow of the day from everyone who has been working, cooking, serving, moving. Notes in the chorus, swelling and fading, blending into a single driving harmony.

It does not find itself following the rest of the normal routine. There is a guiding note for it alone - a clarion call that leads it to a small room covered in cushioned material and overstuffed furniture. It follows the notes that call it to sit down in one of the chairs, and the song ends not in a graceful coda to lead into the next, but an abrupt silence that makes it gasp with shock and loss.

It looks around, frantic, desperately searching for some sign it is not alone.

On the precipice of a collapse, there is a sudden rush of relief. Eyes rolling back into its head, they fall back into the chair as memories and experiences flow back in.

Sarah. Her name is Sarah. Her name is Sarah Young.

Tears leak from her eyes as she tries to readjust to her own sense of self, and it’s a physical jolt when a voice softly reassures her.

“It’s ok, Sarah. It’s ok. You’re here. You’re you.”

“Ah -! What?!”

Renee smiles at her, wearing a blue…uniform? Uniform, yes. That’s it. UESA duty uniform.

Renee’s her Captain. Sarah’s their first contact specialist.

Ok. Right.

Music comes from the translation box on Renee’s hip and Sarah knows what it’s saying before the message prints.

“They apologize for the difficult transition,” she tells the Captain. “It will get easier as they get to experience more human minds and biochemistry.”

Renee nods. “So it sounds like we can call the experiment a success.”

Sarah can’t help smiling. “It was a very odd experience. Hard to describe, but being totally *known* like that…it’s intense.”

“I can imagine.” Helping her up from the chair, Renee’s fingers linger just a bit longer than they need to. “I was a little worried.”

Sarah leans against her a bit more than she really needs to.

“They appreciated knowing and understanding us more, and I…it was peaceful. Happy. But the more I’m back to just me, I’m glad to be back.”

“With you” went unsaid, but not unheard.

“Would you go back if they asked for you? Perhaps as an Ambassador?”

Sarah considered it, and her fingers twined with Renee’s before she gave a firm squeeze.

“Maybe, yeah. But I’d rather not go alone.”

“…I’ll debrief you later, and we’ll discuss it.”

In the back of her mind, if she listened carefully, Sarah could just hear a happy little trill of song.
