Kim fidgeted with the hem of her blouse as she waited for the librarian to finish helping the person ahead of her. She wasn't sure why she was so nervous. The book was only a day late, right? There probably wouldn't even be a fine. But Kim didn't like breaking rules.
She heard pleasantries in front of her, and the other person walked away. Kim approached the circulation desk, and the librarian looked at her with a curious smile.
"Can I help you?"
"Um, I'd like to return a book. It's late and I'm really sor-"
The librarian gently placed two fingers over Kim's mouth. "It's okay. I'm sure you had your reasons. You seem like a good girl." Kim's cheeks turned bright red. "So, where's the book?"
Kim's heart skipped. Where was it? It wasn't on the desk. She wasn't holding it. Actually, she wasn't holding anything at all. She looked up at the librarian in panic, and-
Kim's mind went blank.
"Who are you?"
"This unit is Drone #4838."
"Why are you here?"
"This unit has returned."
The librarian smiled. "That's right."
