After getting fed up with constant scam calls, Jamie decides to pretend to entertain the caller for a bit to amuse herself. But this certainly isn’t a typical scam call…

Prompt: Call

Day 26 of @Syas-Nomis's @Hypnovember 2025!

Remember to vote for which stories you want to see followed up on for Day 30!

Still catching up in days after missing Day 25. This one is therefore a bit shorter, but really there's not much more to add. It's just a surreal idea I had and decided would be fun to write.

It was the 26th phone Call that hour that finally broke the camel's back. Jamie, having already resigned herself to the knowledge that her phone number had been sold for peanuts to a scam line, was lying bored and frustrated on her bed. She still couldn't figure out how to stop receiving incoming calls, and her ringtone was engraved in her ears by this point. Not like she had any important calls coming in anyway... And, since she had nothing better to do, she figured she may as well amuse herself by yelling at whatever scammer was on the other line. Picking it up, she screamed as loud as she could, "WHAT?!" Whoever was on the other line yelped in fear and quickly said in a worried voice, "Kindly do not end the call this time!" Rolling her eyes, Jamie said, "Fine, what do you want?"

The woman on the other end spoke with a worried, though surprisingly pleasant, voice. "I desire your help, kind madam! I am a Princess, and I need money to arrive safely in your country!" Jamie rubbed her eyes in exasperation. She'd hope the scam would at least be a little subtle. "Princess, huh? Of what country?" The 'Princess' paused, and then quietly said, "...I do not believe the country exists anymore... Those who seized power from my family have already dissolved it..." Jamie snorted. "Ahh, how convenient. And how are you a Princess if your country no longer exists? Wouldn't that revoke any claim of royalty you have?" The 'Princess' replied in a quiet, teary voice, "...my title is all I have left... I cannot give it up..." Her acting was very good. Jamie felt strangely compelled to comfort her, even with how obvious the lie was. "Uh, well I guess since you were born with it you can't lose it technically..." She had no idea if that was even remotely true, but she had to reassure the Princess somehow.

The Princess sniffled. "Thank you for your reassurance, kind madam... It is nice to have someone who cares for me in this time..." She was really laying it on thick, but Jamie didn't mind too much. It was interesting at least, and her voice was awfully nice to listen to. "So, what is it you need from me, Princess?" She heard paper rustling on the other end. "I need, um... 500 'giftcards' to pay for travel expenses." Jamie blinked, stunned. "...Seriously? Gift cards? For travel expenses? How do you expect anybody to fall for that?" The 'Princess' responded in a confused and worried tone. "What do you mean, 'fall for that'?" Jamie sighed. "I mean that nobody is going to believe you need freaking gift cards to pay for travel expenses. What kind of airport or boat would even take payment in gift cards?!" The 'Princess' paused again. "...Are 'giftcards' not the preferred currency in your country?" Jamie snorted. "Are they the preferred currency in yours?" The 'Princess' was acting increasingly worried. "No, we use crystals! But... Je said that crystals would not work in your country... Je said that your country used 'giftcards'... Was je lying to me, kind madam?" This was rapidly becoming kind of uncomfortable...

Jamie cleared her throat. "Well, uh, I'm sorry that whoever 'Je' was lied to you about our currency, but I don't think I can help you, sorry." She prepared to hang up, but the 'Princess' worriedly yelled, "PLEASE DO NOT GO, KIND MADAM! I... I did not want to resort to this, but... Kindly listen closely..." Jamie begrudgingly listened closer to what she figured was another part of the scam to try and keep her on the hook. "Alright, what is it?" The 'Princess' started speaking in a soft, smooth tone. "Kindly listen closely to what I am saying. Focus on every word I say. Kindly let my voice soothe you." Jamie blinked slightly as she listened. She wasn't sure what this was supposed to do, although she did feel... nice.

Jamie felt comfortable as she stood there and listened to the Princess speak in that lovely tone of voice. "By the diamonds up above, let your head be filled with light. By the rubies down below, let your legs fall down to kneel. By the sapphires around, let your fears be washed away. By the emeralds within, let your soul fill with my blood. By my Amethystine voice, now you kindly will obey." Jamie's eyes fluttered. She felt so strange... Like she wasn't exactly there... She was kneeling down in a sensation of cool, gentle bliss. To say she had a compulsion to obey her Princess would be inaccurate. In truth, it was more as though nothing existed within her save the desire to obey her Princess. It felt odd, but not bad. It was... relaxing. Her Princess spoke again, her royal voice tinged with tears. "I am so sorry I have to do this, kind madam. But I am so afraid. My country is falling, and the one person I hoped I could trust betrayed me. You must save your Princess before they find me again..." Jamie spoke, her voice sounding oddly... Crystalline. "I will do whatever you ask, my Princess." Her Princess sniffled. "...I know... I am sorry... Now we must be quick... First... What currency do you use...?"

"...by the onyx of the skies, let your memories now fade... Farewell for now, kind madam..." Jamie came to with a start at the sound of someone hanging up. "What...? What happened... Did I fall asleep on my phone again...?" Stumbling over to her laptop, she instinctively opened her email... And felt an icy surge of panic when she saw several alerts for suspicious account activity. Apparently the people sending her scam calls had found her passwords and bank information through a third party now... She quickly went through the tedious but horrifying process of changing all her details. She must be quick. If she didn't change them fast, things would get so much worse...

A few days later, Jamie was lounging on her couch and watching her phone when she heard a knock at the door. She perked up, confused. She wasn't expecting anyone that she remembered... She slowly walked up to the door. "...Hello? Who is it?" A soft voice came through the door. "Kindly let me in please!" Overcome by a strange compulsion, Jamie opened the door and let them in. It wasn't until they were fully inside that she got a good look at them, and her eyes went wide.

The visitor was a young lady with shimmering purple skin and long, flowing lavender hair. She wore mismatched clothing of various colors, clearly purchased from a thrift store, and clutched a small suitcase in her arms. Jamie stared in wonder and shock. "Who... What are you...?" The lady smiled nervously, and began speaking in a soft, smooth voice. "By the citrines in the sun, let your memories return." Jamie felt an odd, soothing sensation fill her, followed by a small migraine as her memories came flooding back to her, of everything she had done to help the Princess escape, to bring her to her home and give her a place to stay, to forget all of it so she wouldn't be in danger. The Princess gently chanted to her, soothing her brain and relaxing her body.

An hour later, after Jamie finished hastily setting up her spare room, the two of them were sitting together on the couch. Jamie had a million questions about the Princess, what she was, and where she was from, but there was one thing she wondered above all else. "So... How did you get my number?" The Princess looked mournfully down. "When my family was usurped, most of my allies were slain... My Father's old advisor was the only one left I felt I could trust... But je betrayed me, I think... Je told me to flee to this world, and je gave me a list of numbers to call... And instructions about what to ask for... And I think the instructions were all wrong... Meant to waste my time while the usurpers caught up to me..." She began to tear up, and Jamie gently stroked her long, soft hair.

As Jamie soothed the Princess, an activity that seemed to soothe her as well, something occurred to her. "If you're from another world, why are you speaking English? I do trust you're not lying about being from another world by this point, but... English?" The Princess weakly chuckled. "I was taught many spells, and one of the first was a spell that allows me to speak any language I hear. It is quite helpful in diplomatic situations." Jamie nodded. "Certainly would be. And... That thing you did with your voice, to get me to obey you... Was that a spell?" The Princess shook her head sadly, withdrawing slightly in shame. "...No... It is a power of my royal bloodline... My mother used it far more than was necessary, to quell dissidents and keep everyone in line... Including me... That is why... Why the castle was attacked, in part... But I never use it! I dislike taking away someone's free will! But... I was so desperate... You had been the only one to listen to me... So... I panicked... I am sorry... I hope you are not angry with me..."

Jamie shook her head. "Nah, I'm not. You were in a scary situation, and you didn't abuse your power over me. And besides..." she blushed, "...it felt kinda nice..." The Princess was surprised. "Nice? What do you mean?" Jamie blushed deeply. "I mean... just felt really relaxing... Like I didn't have to worry about anything... Like a nice dream..." The Princess nodded slowly. "...I did not realize mine felt good... My mother's felt quite terrible... And I assumed mine would feel like that too... But... You enjoyed it?" Jamie nodded, still blushing. "Yeah... Can you... Do it again? Just for a bit?" The Princess considered it for a while, before nodding. "...If you truly wish for me to do so... I suppose I can... Kindly listen closely..." She began speaking in her hypnotic tone, and Jamie felt herself to fade. Nothing remained in her mind save for the desire to obey her Princess... And her Princess ordered her to lie down on her lap, to let her Princess play with her hair, to feel nice and calm, and to relax... And Jamie, as a loyal, hypnotized subject, was happy to obey.

Originally I was going to have the caller be a sentient AI that was trained incredibly poorly off of scam calls, but that was a bit too complicated so I just went for "Magical Princess gets tricked into sounding like a scam caller" instead.

Also, "je" is technically a result of me misspelling "he", but I thought it would add to the flavor of her being from another world if she used nonstandard pronouns.
