Chapter 4: Stonehold and the Iron Vow
Kővár did not merely sit upon the mountain; it was a part of it. A massive, terrifying fortress of granite and shadow, the city was carved directly into the jagged peaks, its towers clawing at the sky like the teeth of a sleeping dragon. As Elara approached, the rhythmic, heavy clanking of her armor was swallowed by the sheer scale of the stone walls. Great braziers, fueled by dragon-fire, lined the approaches, casting a harsh, flickering orange glow that fought against the encroaching mountain mist.

The gates of the city were massive, reinforced with dark iron, and guarded by men who looked as though they had been carved from the mountain itself. As Elara drew near, the guards’ casual posture vanished. They straightened, their eyes widening as the 1.9-meter-tall titan of dark steel loomed over them. The sheer mass of her armor, the heavy, rhythmic groan of its joints, and the cold, divine authority in her gaze commanded an immediate, instinctive respect. She was not a traveler; she was a walking siege engine.

Passing through the gates, Elara entered a world of controlled chaos. The streets of Kővár were narrow, winding arteries of stone, choked with the smells of woodsmoke, roasted meat, livestock, and the sharp tang of spilled ale. It was a city built for survival, a place where the currency was not just gold, but blood and steel.

Her destination was the Adventurer's Guild—the beating, violent heart of the city.

The Guild hall was a monumental structure, a cavernous space of dark wood and heavy stone that seemed designed to contain the roar of a hundred battles. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of old parchment, whetted steel, and the sweat of weary warriors. In the center of the hall stood the Great Board—a massive, multi-tiered structure covered in hundreds of scrolls, each representing a quest, a contract, or a death sentence.

Elara’s movements through the hall were slow and deliberate, her heavy boots striking the stone floor with the authority of a drumbeat. The boisterous laughter of the mercenaries died down in her wake, replaced by a wary, respectful silence. They saw the dark, rune-etched plate; they saw the "Holy Warrior" of the Order.

She approached the reception desk, where a woman with sharp, professional features and hair the color of tarnished copper sat behind a wall of ledgers. The woman’s eyes flickered to Elara’s chest, where a heavy, silver-grey medallion hung—the mark of the Steel Rank.

In the hierarchy of the Guild, the ranks were absolute: Bronze and Copper for the initiates; Iron and Steel for the seasoned veterans; Silver and Gold for the masters; Platinum for the legends; and the mythic Mithril for those who walked among gods. To hold a Steel Rank meant Elara was no mere novice; she was a lethal force, capable of surviving the most treacherous corners of the world.

"A Steel Rank from the Order of Light," the receptionist noted, her voice steady despite the intimidating presence looming over her. "Welcome to Stonehold, Saint Knight. The Guild honors your service. How may we assist your training?"

"The Board," Elara commanded. Her voice was a low, metallic rasp that cut through the ambient noise of the hall. "I require tasks that demand more than mere steel. I require the testing of the Blessing."

She turned to the Great Board, her eyes scanning the scrolls. She ignored the low-level tasks—the protection of village granaries or the clearing of mountain goblins. Her gaze searched for something that would push the boundaries of her newly forged mana.

Two missions caught her eye, both carrying the weight of high-tier difficulty:

The Forest Purge: A local farming community was being decimated by a relentless pack of shadow-touched wolves. The task required rapid movement and sustained magical output to clear the woods.
The Great Boar Hunt: To prepare for the upcoming City Festival, the Council required the heads of the Great Boars—massive, armored beasts that prowled the deep thickets. These creatures possessed hides like stone and a primal, crushing strength.
Elara’s hand hovered over the second scroll. The Boar Hunt was a perfect crucible. It would demand her brute physical strength, her mastery over the Earth to break their charge, and her mastery of Fire to pierce their armored hides. It was a hunt of pure, explosive power.

"The Great Boars," Elara stated, her voice hardening.

The receptionist nodded, quickly marking the scroll. "A wise choice, Saint Knight. The Boars are relentless, but their meat and hides are worth their weight in platinum. Your task begins at dawn."

Elara took the parchment, her fingers tracing the coarse texture. Deep within her, the "Magical Reservoir" throbbed—a hollow, hungry void that felt a sudden, violent urge to be filled with the chaos of battle. She felt the Fire and Earth runes in her palms pulse in anticipation.

She believed she was choosing a mission to refine her weapon. She did not realize that by seeking to test her power, she was only making her "vessel" larger, more capacious, and more ready to be filled by the sweet, roseate corruption that was already beginning to stir in the shadows of the forest.
