She could barely move a muscle, and her mouth felt like she was sucking on a penny. It reminded her of the time Synergia had accidentally hit her with a stun blast.

Wait... that’s exactly what had happened, except it wasn’t an accident.

Red Lynx opened her eyes. Everything was fuzzy, but she could see that she was in a room with bright pink walls. After blinking three or four times, the scene came into focus. The pink was the actual wall color, not an afterimage.

It was too nice to be a room in the warehouse. So was the bed she was lying on.

Lying on... and bound to. Her muscles were starting to respond, but she still wasn’t able to move very much.

As her head cleared, she systematically looked herself over. A black leather corset had been buckled over her tunic, with three cords linking each side of the bedframe to D-rings sewn into the garment. Her gear belt was gone, of course. Her boots had been replaced by shiny black leg-huggers that extended halfway up her thighs and bent only a little at the knees. They were similarly fastened to the sides of the bedframe, and linked at the ankles by a rigid bar.

Her arms were at her sides, encased in lower and upper armbands that were fastened to the corset by short chains. Her hands were encased in padded thumbless mittens.

Pressing her head into the pillow, she could feel a collar around her neck. Oddly, it didn’t seem to be attached to anything else.

She furrowed her brow, and could feel that her mask was still in place. Somehow, villains who would break every other written and unwritten rule seemed to respect secret identities. Perhaps they thought that the inanity of defeating Lillian Revnik would take something away from the bragging rights for defeating Red Lynx.

“I’m not beaten yet!” she growled as she yanked on her restraints. If she could just move her arm a few more inches or loosen her bonds enough to roll over and bring her entire body to bear on the right spot, she could get out of this.

She needed to find one weak point. Unfortunately, there didn’t seem to be any. She tried everything from twisting her body for leverage to raw muscle power. None of it worked. At most, she might have increased her range of arm motion by a half-inch or so, and even that was questionable.

She lay back to think. Perhaps if she could figure out what was behind her capture, she could discover some angle for getting out of it.

It was all a setup, of course. That was obvious, given Synergia’s betrayal. Psiductress had deliberately left obvious fingerprints on the crime, thus ensuring that the police would quickly call on her and Kestryl. Since dealing with a mentalist called for tactical finesse rather than raw power, the duo had personally taken charge of the case. The stolen radioisotopes gave them an obvious reason to bring Synergia on the mission, thus setting up the sneak attack. That burst of static must have been her shot at Kestryl.

But why had Synergia turned on them? Psiductress wasn’t powerful enough to make her attack her friends. Maybe she’d used her suggestion power to convince Synergia that the other heroines were disguised villains or something. No, those tricks only worked against people who’d been caught off guard. Synergia was forewarned and should have seen through the deception.

Maybe she’d caught Synergia off guard earlier? No, that wouldn’t work either. She’d taken a shift of monitor duty just before this mission. If Psiductress had gotten to her before then, her powers should be wearing off by now—

Her train of thought was interrupted as the double doors on the far side of the room swung open. In the doorway stood Psiductress, in costume.

This was the first she’d known that Psiductress had a costume. She normally wore practical outfits designed to let her inconspicuously blend in. This outfit was neither practical nor inconspicuous. It was more like a superheroine costume someone would wear to a Halloween party, if it was the sort of party where everybody was trolling for a one-night stand. Her body was barely covered from crotch to nipples by a lavender miniskirt and a hot pink lace-up corset that didn’t quite close in front. She also wore long gloves and spike-heeled thigh boots but didn’t bother with a mask.

She let the doors close and strutted to the side of the bed. “Hello, Red Lynx... or should I call you ‘Lillian’?”

So much for the sanctity of secret identities. Synergia’s betrayal was even worse than she’d thought.

“Actually, I think I’ll just call you ‘Red’ for as long as you’re more or less in costume.”

Her captor was playing head games to get her off balance. She had to come up with some way to turn those tables, to buy time and perhaps find an opening. “Tell me, do you have a use for those isotopes, or were they just part of the setup?”

Psiductress grinned. “So, you figured out the plan. Very good.” She cocked her head and stared down at her for a long moment. “But what you really want to know is how I recruited Synergia.”

“You brainwashed her, obviously.”

“But you’re wondering how I did it.” In a stilted tone, she recited, “Known Powers: Psiductress has the ability to induce extreme suggestibility, causing the target to believe her statements regardless of obvious logical flaws or factual errors. Countermeasures: Psiductress’ suggestibility power is highly dependent on the element of surprise, and generally ineffective against forewarned targets who retain strong mental focus.”

“So, she gave you a copy of our files on you.”

“She gave me your files on everybody, Red. I hope the other information was more accurate than what you had on me.”

“Oh?” This was an opportunity to get the villainess to reveal something about herself that was missing from the League’s files.

“That’s how my power works when I use it like a sledgehammer, applying raw psychic force to make the target immediately accept whatever I say. I can make someone believe six impossible things before breakfast, but they start questioning them by lunchtime and completely dismiss them before dinner. But that’s more than enough time to do the job and get out.”

Psiductress leaned close. “It’s different when I use the power more like a sculptor’s chisel, applying just enough power to make my words stick in your head and get a sense of your responses.” She grinned. “That’s another thing missing from those files. I don’t do circle-star-three-wavy-lines-type mind reading, but when I use my power on you I get definite feedback: emotions, flashes of mental images, that sort of thing.”

Red Lynx tensed. The second-person pronoun didn’t tell her anything that wasn’t already obvious, but it made the situation feel entirely too personal.

“As I get a feel for your mind, I’ll be able to work on it with a light touch, reinforcing a line of thought here, chipping away at a bit of denial there. It takes more time and finesse than the sledgehammer approach, but it has two big advantages.”

Fingers riffled through the bound woman’s scarlet hair. “First, it works even if you know what I’m doing and try to resist. Second, it doesn’t wear off in a few hours. As far as I can tell, it never wears off.”

Red Lynx realized the implications. “That’s what you did to Synergia.”

Psiductress nodded, and then began the story. “Two months ago, I was slipping into the physics building at the State campus. Some idiot rich kid hired me to steal a copy of the final exam, if you can believe that. Hey, money from stupid people spends just like money from smart ones.” She shrugged.

“It turned out that Synergia was in the building for an experiment to see how REM sleep affects her internal charge levels. Well, she woke up, heard me sneaking around in the hall, and got the drop on me. I wasn’t sure who she was—she was wearing flannel pajamas and fuzzy slippers, not her costume—but her forcefield was up so I knew she was a super. Of course, I surrendered right away.”

“Of course,” Red Lynx deadpanned.

“Just for the moment, of course. I didn’t know if she was a psi, so I didn’t try any full-force suggestions. The time I tried that on Cerebrax, the backlash from his mental shielding gave me a headache for a week.”

“You poor dear.”

Psiductress put her hand to her forehead and closed her eyes. “I sense sarcasm.” Opening her eyes, she continued, “Instead, I tried a light nudge with a bit of delicate probing. The obvious verbal suggestion that came to mind was ‘Shouldn’t you be in bed?’ If it didn’t work, it would just be a standard bit of trash-talk— everybody does it, nobody takes it too seriously. But it did work, and my mental probing revealed two things: she wasn’t a psi, and she had some very interesting buried reactions to hearing another woman talk about going to bed. I pressed it just a bit further, until I knew for sure that Syn was a latent lesbian.”

She grinned. “Well, that was an opportunity much too good to pass up. In a few minutes, I had her convinced that we should wait in the lab room... which had a prominent DO NOT DISTURB sign and a nice cozy bed. After that, it was just a matter of nudging her step by step toward sharing the bed with me. It wasn’t difficult: ‘sex with a hot supervillainess’ was one of her deep dark fantasies.”

Her grin became an outright leer. “We discovered that multiple orgasms really spike Syn’s internal charge levels. She told them some story about having a wet dream and jilling off while she was half-awake.”

“So you had her so far under your thumb that she embarrassed herself to cover up for you”.

“I prefer to think of it as true love. She fell in love with me that night.”

“Because you warped her mind!”

“Call it what you like,” Psiductress shrugged, nearly bouncing her boobs out of her corset. “I didn’t put anything into her mind that wasn’t there already. All I did was bring some buried thoughts to the surface.”

Maybe that was true; maybe it wasn’t. It didn’t matter right now. For now, she had to focus on the matter at hand.

“So, that’s why she led me and Kestryl into a trap. Because she couldn’t allow us to capture you.”

Psiductress shook her head. “No. The reason she brought you and Kestryl here is to stage an intervention.” She licked her lips.

“You see, the two of you are also latent lesbians. Tonight, you’re going to become active ones.”

She could barely move a muscle, and her mouth felt like she was sucking on a penny. It reminded her of the time Synergia had accidentally hit her with a stun blast.
