Scanning beams covered her naked body. In the adjacent tube, a vaguely humanoid form shifted into her perfect duplicate.

Helmets descended onto both heads. Images flashed through her mind. She almost blacked out... until she heard her own voice from the doppleganger.

"Memory transfer complete. All previous loyalties and sexual inhibitions deleted. Ready for retrotransfer."

Creating a doppleganger as a "scratch monkey" for mental editing to be ported back to the original was a wrinkle I just had to play with when it occurred to me.

I suddenly imagine a longer story in which the “scratch monkey” is not destroyed, and the deleted elements, which are permanently removed from the original in the overwrite, are eventually recovered in the copy. This would make the doppelganger mentally the original character, who must work to defeat the “evil twin” in her original body.
