Ally sat at her desk, hunched over, nose buried in her psychology textbooks, desperate to find everything she could about hypnosis.

”Is it really that strong? Or was that a one-time thing?” She asked herself.

Her recovered memory haunted her since that fateful moment in the kitchen: the look in the man’s eye, the calmness in her mother’s voice - and, most of all, what her mother was able to accomplish…

“I thought it was just a therapeutic device - to help relax, quit smoking, increase confidence… Oh, for fuck’s sake, of course! I’m such an idiot…”

She chuckled to herself, shaking her head, before standing up…

“This should be interesting…”

Ally put on her jacket and boots and looked at herself in the mirror. Immediately, she saw that her posture had straightened once again and her overall image looked so… commanding.

Her jacket creaked a little bit as she sat down in front of the mirror.

Ok, here goes,” she thought to herself.

”Ok, Ally, we’re going to do a little self-hypnosis,” she said to her reflection. “We’re going to do a classic progressive relaxation induction, and when we fall into trance, we’re going to give ourselves suggestions of feeling calm, rejuvenated, and energized. And in…” she glanced at her phone, reading 6:28PM, “32 minutes, we’ll wake up again.”

She noticed she was absently caressing the leather of her jacket as she spoke aloud.

Oh, what the hell…”

”… And, we’re going to give ourself a suggestion that whenever we touch this jacket, we’ll feel a boost of confidence,” she added.

”Now, we’re going to start with a few deep breaths,” she said, looking into her eyes in the mirror as her chest rose and fell with each breath. “Good, we’re gonna focus on our feet, letting them become heavy, limp and relaxed.”

Ally, sure enough, felt her feet beginning to settle into the floor beneath her.

”Wow, it’s already working - but, these boots are pretty heavy, maybe I just never noticed before.”

”Good, and now moving up to the calves, the knees, feeling loose, calm…”

Ally noticed her posture shifting a little as she maintained eye contact with her reflection.

”And as the feet, calves, and knees keep feeling more and more relaxed, feeling better and better, that wave of relaxation spreads further and further up the legs, reaching all the way to the waist.”

Ally imagined an ocean wave of relaxation flowing up her legs, and, sure enough, the relaxation seemed to ebb and flow up her leg muscles…!

Yes, it’s working…!”

”And the further it goes, the better I feel. The wave moves up and up, flowing over my stomach, my chest, relaxing all the muscles in my back and shoulders…”

Distantly, Ally noticed her posture slouching in the mirror as her shoulders slumped a bit, leaning forward slightly.

Whoa…

”And the better I feel, the deeper I go, as the waves of relaxation move up to my neck, washing away all the tension, releasing all the little muscles in my face as I drift into a relaxing… sleep…”

Ally’s eyes closed as she accepted the suggestion, swimming in the relaxing feelings she brought out.

”Mmm… this is nice. I feel so relaxed, it’s just me and the good feelings right now…”

Ally let herself linger in these feelings, her soft, shallow breaths flooding her nostrils with the scent of her jacket. The stress, the worries, it was all gone as she basked in the good feelings.

What seemed like only a few moments later, she felt her eyes opening all on their own. She took a big, cleansing breath, and indulged in a full body stretch.

Instinctively, Ally reached for her phone to see if there were any txts waiting for her. Her eyes nearly popped out of her head when she saw the time. 7PM!

Wow, 32 minutes on the dot!”

Her hand went to her collarbone in shock, her palm landing on the soft leather of her jacket. Instantly, Ally felt a rush of confidence shoot up her spine, blossoming in her chest.

”Whoa, this shit really works!”

She looked at herself in the mirror again. Her eyes were bright - more full of life than she remembered them being in years. She radiated beauty and vitality, as if they were oozing out of every pore.

Ally felt exhilarated.

”Wow… that was easy,” she thought to herself. As she processed what came to pass, her eyes opened wide as she gasped at the realization: “That was only my first time, and I did better than she did.”

Ally turned her gaze back to her reflection, gave her most commanding, piercing gaze at herself, and whispered, “kick some ass.”

The budding hypnotist spent her afternoon practicing as much as she could. She searched through several prominent hypnotists on YouTube, taking notes on their body language, vocal tones, and induction techniques.

After a short while, she came across a video in which the hypnotist used a spinning black and white spiral on their volunteer.

”Seems a little goofy. Does it really work?”

Ally pulled out her phone and set it up to begin an audio recording. Holding it close, she began to speak:

”Watch the spiral. Watch it spin as it swirls around and around… around and around. Focus on its very centre as your body begins to relax. Focus as it draws in all your stresses, all your worries…”

She continued on with her ad-libbed induction, pausing periodically to compare her work against her notes.

”Feel the spiral pulling you in deeper and deeper, leaving your mind open and blank. Hypnosis is so easy, isn’t it? So very easy. Eyes glued to the centre as you feel yourself pulled into its depths, feeling eager and suggestible…”

Ally felt a little wave of good feelings in her chest and belly.

A little while later, her recording was finished and was ready to try it on herself. As she Googled a spiral to focus on, her eyes fell on her laptop’s webcam.

”Yeah, why not? For science,” she thought to herself, nodding.

Ally adjusted the lighting in her dorm room for filming as best she could. She opened the curtains all the way, turned on every light, and angled her seat as best she could for optimal lighting conditions.

After taking a deep breath to steady herself, she sat down in front of her laptop, hit the Record button, and turned on the audio recording.

She let her eyes settle on the spiral as her voice began broadcasting through her phone.

”Watch the spiral,” she heard herself say. “Watch it spin as it swirls around and around…”

The spiral spun before her, endlessly looping, never wavering.

”Wow, it just… doesn’t let up.”

”Feel the spiral pulling you in deeper and deeper,” her recorded voice continued. Sure enough, Ally felt exactly that. She found her eyes glued to the spiral before her, unable to look away as her thoughts became increasingly quiet. She didn’t even notice the drool or her unblinking stare.

The next thing she knew, Ally’s thoughts returned to her, hearing her recorded voice saying, “five, wide awake, feeling amazing!”

She took stock of her surroundings, hearing the end of the recording, noticing her camera running, seeing her image continuing to record to a video file. Turning the camera off, she stood up and took a big, whole body stretch.

“Wow, I do feel amazing! If I can do this to myself…”

As she moved to close the curtains, Ally turned around to hear Cruella de Vil playing on her phone.

Ally’s chest and shoulders tightened up as the telltale song kept playing.

Taking a few deep breaths, she slid her finger across the screen.

”Hello, mother,” Ally said.

”Ally, we’ve talked about this. Can’t you call me ‘mom’?” Alicia asked.

”Were you able to settle things with the University, mother?” Ally could feel the lump in her throat as she held her breath.

”That’s actually why I’m calling, dear. Listen, there’s no easy way to say this, so I’m just going to come right out and say this. We can’t pay your residency.”

Ally grew perfectly quiet, stunned, at those five little words. She held her breath as her mother continued.

”It’s your father. He’s had another one of his little… episodes, and this one can’t just be explained away. Your father… well, it’s bad, Ally. His work performance hasn’t been great, lately, and Steven found the bottle in his desk drawer. They told him that enough was enough, and his choices were either AA or early retirement…”

Ally, distantly, felt herself growing numb as she listened, trying not to interrupt.

”Well, he didn’t like those choices, so… he… well, he knocked three of Steven’s teeth out, and… well, you see where I’m going with this.”

Ally, tears streaming down her cheeks, did her best to stay silent.

”Ally, there some things in life you just can’t change,” Alicia continued. “Right now, I’m just trying to get your father to clean up his act and move some assets around so we can keep the house.”

Ally muted the phone for a moment, letting out a sob as she wiped her eyes and blew her nose.

Touching her jacket, she looked at her desk. She looked at her textbooks propped up all around it, the laptop camera, the paused spiral in a minimized window, the image of herself at the end of the impromptu video…

Her choice was clear.

Tapping the mute button on her phone again, her voice was soft, stoic, even cold. ”I understand, mother. I know what I have to do.”

Not waiting for Alicia to respond, she ended the call.

Ally looked to the side, and noticed a pillow was out of place on her bed. She picked it up and fluffed it once, then twice. Suddenly, she found herself punching it as hard as she could. She screamed with a ferocity that would stun Medea, tearing the pillow apart as she did. She watched her hands destroy the pillow as if they were someone else's. Every time she'd put other people's needs first, smiled through another letdown, quietly suffered through disappointment, all came to her hands. Shards of down, foam and fabric flew into the air as years of frustration, disappointment, and betrayal all came out at once.

Tears poured down Ally’s face as she fell to her knees, the snowfall of down and foam falling around her. Her forehead fell to the floor, sobbing as her hands grabbed for something, anything, to anchor her to her former world, but found nothing. "I can't," she whispered aloud between gasps and sobs. "I can't, I can't, I can't..." Before long, the words devolved into a jumbled mess, then into wailing...

Thirty minutes of sobbing into her blanket and one noise complaint later, Ally looked down to see the puddle of tears that collected on her jacket. Instinctively, she brushed them off with her hand. As her fingertips brushed against the sleek material, she once again felt a wave of confidence flood through her.

Ally stood up, tall, taking a deep, cleansing breath, and faced herself in the mirror.

"Right. I've got this," she said aloud, making pointed eye contact. "I'm young, I'm motivated, and I'm skilled. Even mother could do it, and she doesn't have half the skill I do."

Ally glanced down and noticed the bits of dust and crumbs her pants had collected during her breakdown. Calmly, she dusted herself off and headed for the bathroom.

Looking in the mirror, she saw her tear-stained makeup and hair disheveled. Her eyes, once radiating with confidence, now looked bloodshot and tired.

"Well, I can fix that."

Ally emerged from the shower, the scent of her favourite body wash still clinging to her skin. She grabbed a towel, drying most of the shower water from her black hair, leaving a trace amount remaining in the tips. She'd spent over half an hour in front of the mirror, restoring herself until she was fully made up again.

Settling into her ergonomic computer chair, she opened up YouTube and started a new account: Goth Hypnotist Alison.

"Seems provocative, without being over the top or sensationalist."

After playing with the editing software, she was happy with the end result: the video she made of herself falling into trance now had some tasteful changes made. She tweaked the aesthetics a little and added some echo effects to the audio track. Satisfied, she uploaded her very first video, calling it "Goth Hypnotist Hypnotizes Herself."

Looking to the side, she saw her eyes had some of their radiance returned as the excitement of her new project hit her hard.

"Ok, one video down. If I'm gonna start making money on social media, I need to diversify."

Ally wrung her hands together as her gaze flitted about the room.

"Instagram? Ok, Instagram, which means I'm gonna need a few pictures..."

Ally adjusted the smart lighting in her room to rich, crimson tones, perfect to set the mood. She attached her phone to her telescoping selfie stick, held it up high, and snapped pose after pose. Her first was a simple image of her biting her lip seductively, while the second had more of a magick theme, presenting herself as a witch. She played with different lighting, different angles, keeping some with a whole-body shot while others focused on her eyes, nails, or chest.

Satisfied with the results, she uploaded a few of them onto her Instagram account, @GothHypnotistAlison, keeping the rest in reserve for later uploads.

"Alright, that's progress. I'm still gonna need..."

Ally's thought was interrupted as her phone screen lit up. Her eyes nearly popped out of her head as she read the notification.

"I'm already up over 20 subscribers?!"

Her hands were shaking so much, she could barely type her password to unlock her phone as she tried to access the metrics. A rush of adrenaline rushed over Ally as she read through the comment section on her video, astounded to see people drawn in by her work so quickly.

"Wow, is hypnosis real? I thought it was all fake."
"Do you offer sessions?"
"dtf?"

Her black painted lips curled into a triumphant smile - though, granted it was briefly tempered by the last comment.

Ally quickly went to several freelance sites, advertising her services available for sale. "Get Hypnotized Today by Goth Hypnotist Alison!" She wrote out detailed descriptions of her background in psychology, then flushed it out with some more... descriptive imagery of her voice. "I've never failed to hypnotize someone once I've set my mind to it."

"I mean... it's not wrong."

Ally linked her YouTube and IG profiles to the freelance sites and vice versa, and added a booking calendar.

"Hmm, I can diversify more than that."

Ally, albeit reluctantly, made a separate profile to offer tutoring services for psychology students.

"Yeah, it's boring compared to that - but, money's money."

She emphasized her background in cognitive psychology and education, offering help in the form of research methodology, intro to psychology, and more foundational services like proper study habits.

Ally's eyebrows shot up as she glanced at the clock - 11:23 PM.

"Holy shit, where did the night go?"

Ally stood up from her chair and stretched again, smiling at the telltale squeak of her jacket. She stood in front of the mirror once again and took in her new look.

"Jeez... what a difference a day makes. 20 subscribers is an excellent start."

Ally closed her eyes and dreamed of her success: live streams, having comment after comment pouring in, praising her for her abilities; collaborations with other hypnotists, gaining an audience with others' fan bases; maybe even her own line of merch...!

"Well, tonight doesn't have to stop here."

Ally grabbed her phone and improvised another session for herself, doubling down on suggestions of confidence, magnetism, and charisma.

She pulled up the spiral graphic again, and beamed a huge smile as she cued everything up.

"I will never feel powerless again," she thought, focusing on the spiral as it began to spin.
