In the original idea for the story, the plaque at the entrance to Exhibit B, with all the Dos and Don’ts and legal disclaimers, would have been included in the main body. However, as I put more and more thought into how such a plaque would work, I began to realise that a) I was making it very involved, b) it would probably break up the flow of the story, and c) it was unnecessary for understanding the story. At the same time, however, I’d put too much thought into it to ditch the idea altogether, so here it is. If you’re the sort of person who likes seeing all (or at least a representative sample of) the exact, technical details of how a fictional smutty art exhibit would work, then this is for you (and you’re my kind of weird); if not, no worries, and I hope you enjoyed the main story!

Exhibit B

Over the years, we have had many models who have been volunteered as art displays by our security system. In Exhibit B, many of these models are returning to put on a more curated, directed, deliberate, and erotic show. This exhibit is strictly adults (18+) only; deliberate violation of this rule (including knowingly bringing in an underage child) will result in an immediate, permanent ban.

In some cases, touching of the models is allowed, and, indeed, encouraged: it adds to the experience for everyone. As such, you may see sexual behaviour from some guests in this exhibit. We can assure you that all models gave their full, knowing, informed consent to being touched in this way; you can find the (censored) contracts they signed to that effect on the exhibit’s webpage, at www.morningtonpg.com/exhibits/adult/exhibitb or by scanning the QR code.

However, different models necessarily have different boundaries. The boundaries for a particular sculpture are listed on the information plaque beside its pedestal, in a distilled form. Exact definitions of the terms used on these plaques can be found below, and throughout the central hall; you may also ask any staff member to give you a reminder of these rules. Violation of any of these rules will be detected, and will result in an immediate, permanent ban, and immediate legal action.

To prevent unauthorised recordings, the use of personal devices is not permitted in this exhibit, except in designated zones.

Thank you for your cooperation, and, above all, enjoy your visit to Exhibit B.

Definitions:

Model: A human.

Erogenous zones: Lips; nipples and immediate surrounds (regardless of perceived masculine/feminine presentation); buttocks; genitalia; any Props worn on or attached to the above.

Props: Clothing; sex toys; or any other part of a statue that is not a Support or part of a model’s body.

Supports: Wires; poles; stands; or any other part of a statue that is used to support or maintain a Model’s position. Extended contact with and direct manipulation of Supports are strictly forbidden due to safety concerns.

Light touching: Making contact with the Models.

Heavy touching: Squeezing and petting (repeated but non-arousing motions).

Sexual touching: Kissing; licking; deliberate sexual stimulation and/or penetration; or any other gentle but clearly sexual act.

Rough touching: Spanking; pinching; contact intended to leave marks ; any other non-gentle act. Any such act conducted on Props, even if the Prop cannot be marked.

Movement: Attempting to move Models’ body parts, Props, or whole bodies.

Close examination: Inspecting statues from what would ordinarily be an unusually close distance (i.e., enough to set off an alarm in a regular exhibit). Attempting to cause Models to move of their own volition, without making contact.

Personal comments: Remarking, within earshot of the Models, on the physical facts of a statue and your opinions of its aesthetics. In general, making any comment you could equally make of a vase.

Sexual comments: Remarking, within earshot of the Models, on your opinion of the statue’s sexual desirability, including but not limited to ratings of “sexiness”, “hotness”, etc. and descriptions of how you may wish to treat them.

Recording: Creating photographs, videos, traditional media reproductions, or any other reproduction of models. Recording is only permitted with the gallery’s cameras, which must be reviewed by our guards before and during transferral of images to personal devices.

Once again, do not hesitate to ask our friendly staff if you have any questions about these terms or restrictions. By abiding by these rules, you can create a friendlier environment for yourself, your fellow guests, our models, and our staff.

…There’s probably a reason “unnecessarily in-depth worldbuilding” is one of my favourite tags.
