Last time on The Affini and her Nerd:

"So what is the Derseqi Prize?"

"Congratulations on being dominated for the Derseqi Prize, by the way!"

"Is my acceptance speech good, Heyacith?"

"Mats, you know you can't use your speech to denounce Rosewood and call for her expulsion from the academy."

"And to announce the prizewinner, our guest affini speaker this conference is... Rosewood Tae, Thirty-Second Bloom!"
"Sophonts, thank you. I am thrilled to announce that this conference's prize-winner is.... Oh, um, excuse me, one moment please."

"You didn't tell me Mats was the winner!"

"Why, is that a problem?"

"Yes, it's a problem!"

"But you two are in the same field, you publish on the same topic, you both cite each other frequently."

"So it's adorable, but for some reason Mats hates me!"

"Why?"

"I don't know why the cutie doesn't like me, he seems to think I'm a bad scholar. He reacted terribly when I translate Atlas Shrugged."

"Atlas Shrugged?"

"Long anti-capitalist novel. Anyway, I can't give Mats the prize! He'll bite me!"

"Wait, what?"

"Mats is a biter!"

"I'm sure everything will go fine. Just go out and present the prize."

"So, um, yes. The winner of the Derseqi Prize is Mats Syringa, Twenty-Third Floret!"

"Heyacinth, let me go!"

"Mats, I need you to promise to behave first."

"I need to get up there and accept the prize!"

"Yes, and I need you to promise you won't attack Rosewood."

"I'm not going to lie to you."

"Okay."

"So let me go!"

"Sophonts, our apologies. Mats unfortunately has taken ill and can't accept the Derseqi Prize in person. I'm his guest, Heyacinth Aquaria, Fifty-First Bloom, here to accept it on his behalf."

"Let me go!"

"Pay no attention to the voice inside my core."

"So, Liliac, I have good news and bad news."

"Oh, did Mats win the prize?"

"That's the good news, the bad news is that the prize was presented by, um, Rosewood."

"Oh dear. Did he behave?"

"What do you think?"

"Is he okay?"

"He's on some Class Z's for now. Going to keep him under for the voyage back, maybe ramp him up onto some Class J's."

"That might help. Class J's help him get some emotional distance. He does hate them, though."

"I know, but I'm also not qualified to talk him through the emotional turmoil of... that."

"Understandable. He didn't bite anyone, did he?"

"I kept him safely wrapped up, I didn't want to risk another incident. Rosewood thinks it's cute that he tries to bite her, but when he actually succeeds... well, you know how she gets."

"Completely loses her sense of humor."

"Yes."

"Wake up, Mats."

"Where 'm I?"

"Safely back home. You had quite an ordeal."

"Wasn' an ordeal. I was fine. Need to, need to... Rosewood! I need to..."

"Rosewood is several light years away by now, petal."

"But, but, but..."

"I know. Now, I want you to look into my eyes and count backwards from 10."

"10... 9... 8... 8... 8... 8..."

"Imagine that you're in a library."

"I'm in a library. Lots of books."

"Yes, good flower. Now, I want you to go to one of the books and open it. Inside, you'll see a picture of Rosewood."

"I see... Rosewood. Need to..."

"And now, as you look at the picture you see it begin to shrink. As it shrinks, so do your feelings about her presenting the Derseqi Prize."

"Feelings... shrink..."

"5... it's getting smaller 4... it's too small to make out the details 3... it's not even recognizable as Rosewood 2... it's not even recognizable as an affini 1... you can barely even tell it's a drawing and 0... it's gone."

"Gone."

"Now, how do you feel about Rosewood."

"Bad scholar, want to bite her."

"And what image do you associate with Rosewood?"

"A man holding up a giant globe."

"And what direction is the globe spinning?"

"Counter-clockwise."

"Good. Everything's back to the baseline then. Now, I want you to count backwards from 10..."

I think this is actually the first time we've had mind control in the Human Domestication Guide story about mind-controlling plants published on the website for mind control stories.
