Prompt: "Technology"
Joined stream
Pat was lazily browsing through the available thoughtstreams. Usually, they would just tune up to whatever their friends enjoyed, spending time sharing feels about the pieces. But, lately, everyone seemed fascinated by some neo-brainsic collab. And, despite quite enjoying brainsic, Pat wasn't feeling creative-minded today.
As they opened and closed their feed for the third time, an unrequested focus tab popped up. It was unusual and surprising - they were pretty sure they didn't set an alarm, and focus tabs were something only the chip owner was supposed to set. Puzzled, they felt their focus pull into the connection.
A flood of emotions poured onto them. A meld of intense joy and overwhelming pleasure. A sense of belonging and community. A certainty of inner peace and love.
It was bliss.
Then the tab closed, and Pat was alone again. Alone to process it all.
A few moments passed. They felt exhausted, body shivering, and could feel tears staining their cheeks.
But, more than anything, they felt the void that the connection left behind. And they needed to fill it.
Pat took a moment to center themself. Then, they selected the collab, closed their eyes, and thought : "Join stream".
Notes:
This is probably the least creative of these stories. A few days/weeks before the prompt, Asymmetry wrote a short story called "Chorus" over on twitter, which is now available here. This story has... Basically the same plot, but done better and about poetry instead of music. While I remembered that the plot came from somewhere and wasn't out of nowhere, I managed to both forget where it was from and make my result way closer to "Chorus" than I expected. Sorry !
I remember when you posted this on MCL, and I remain endlessly flattered that you found inspiration in something I wrote! Seriously, I smile uncontrollably every time I think of this.
