Chapter One
Sandra stepped past the velvet rope and entered the bustling Los Angeles nightclub. The music thumped through the floorboards, vibrating up through the soles of her heels. She paused near the entrance and reached down to adjust the hem of her red dress. The garment fit her like a second skin, constricting her waist and pushing her augmented breasts upward. Her previous boyfriend paid for the enlargement surgery before their inevitable breakup, and Sandra considered the procedure the best parting gift she could ask for. She knew her natural assets would only take her a certain distance, and the surgical enhancement provided the necessary leverage to attract wealthier targets. Her face held the natural, untouched youthfulness of a twenty-three-year-old woman. She required no surgical enhancements above her neck, relying on her smooth skin and bright eyes to draw men in. She smoothed the red fabric over her hips, ensuring the dress showcased every curve, and began her walk through the venue.
She bypassed the main dance floor. Men her own age jumped and shouted to the loud music, bumping into each other with spilled drinks in their hands. Sandra ignored them. She viewed young men as a waste of space. They lacked the wealth and the generosity she demanded from a partner. A man in his twenties would probably want her to split the bill, and Sandra had no intention of paying for her own meals or her own lifestyle. She treated her body like a prize, and she refused to waste her time on boys who could barely afford to buy her a cocktail. She kept her chin high and her shoulders pulled back. She walked with a seductive sway in her hips, knowing the deliberate movement drew attention from every direction.
Sandra approached the long wooden bar situated near the elevated VIP section. She preferred this location because it offered a clear vantage point of the wealthy older men who reserved the expensive booths. She found an empty space between two seated patrons and stepped up to the counter. She rested her elbows on the polished wood and leaned forward. The deliberate posture forced her enhanced cleavage to spill prominently over the sweetheart neckline of her dress. She wanted to ensure her assets were visible to the older men sitting in the booths above her. She knew men were visual creatures, and she intended to give them an undeniable show.
A bartender walked over and wiped the counter in front of her. Sandra offered him a bright, welcoming smile. She ordered a cosmopolitan, keeping her voice smooth and measured. She knew how to modulate her tone to project innocence mixed with availability. The bartender nodded and turned to prepare her beverage. Sandra used the brief moment to casually sweep her gaze across the VIP area. She treated the exercise like a job interview where she negotiated who held the power. She was the commodity, and the men in the booths were the prospective buyers.
The bartender returned and placed the pink cocktail on a napkin in front of her. He presented the small black billfold. Sandra didn’t reach for her purse. Instead, she let her gaze soften and turned her head toward a lone businessman standing a few feet away at the counter. She offered him a helpless, inviting pout, lightly biting her lower lip while letting her eyes trail down his chest. The man took one look at her exposed cleavage and eager expression, pulling a crisp bill from his wallet to cover the tab. Sandra thanked him with a sultry whisper, trailing a manicured fingernail down his forearm before turning her back to him. She had her free drink, and she needed to focus on a higher-value prize.
She angled her hips toward the VIP section. She arched her lower spine, stretching the red fabric tight across her torso to accentuate her hourglass figure. She rested her free hand on her hip, striking a pose designed to showcase her sensual curves. She knew her silhouette against the bar would capture the right kind of attention. She scanned the elevated booths, dismissing the younger patrons and the loud, obnoxious groups. She sought a particular kind of man.
Her eyes locked onto an older man sitting near the center of the exclusive area. He wore a tailored navy blue suit that fit his shoulders well. He sat upright, a glass of whiskey on the rocks resting in his hand. He surveyed the club with a calm, commanding expression. Sandra noticed the expensive Rolex on his wrist and the confident way he held his space. He exuded success. He looked like a man who knew how to spoil a woman and douse her in luxury.
Sandra initiated her seduction. She stared directly at the man, waiting for him to register her gaze. It took a few seconds before his eyes shifted and found hers. The dark-blonde-haired woman held eye contact. She allowed a slow, sensual smile to touch her lips, projecting a mix of curiosity and raw sexual invitation. She held his gaze for three seconds before looking away. The young woman understood the thrill of the chase. She turned her head and focused on her cocktail, pretending to be engrossed in the music. She knew he would not be able to resist the bait.
She ran a hand through her blonde hair, sweeping the locks over her right shoulder to expose the bare, smooth skin of her neck. She knew the older man was still watching her. She felt his lust focused on her body. Sandra took a slow sip of her drink, running her tongue over her wet lip in a deliberate, provocative motion. She maintained her arched posture, refusing to slouch. She counted the seconds in her head, letting the sexual tension build across the room.
She enjoyed the feeling of being desired. The knowledge that a wealthy, successful man was currently imagining what she looked like underneath the red dress sent a warm flush through her veins. She let her hips sway a fraction to the music, offering him a subtle preview of her flexibility. She knew how to play the game of seduction, using her physical assets to draw men in without saying a word. She wanted him to crave her before they even exchanged introductions.
She waited a minute before casting another sensual glance toward the VIP booth. The suited man was no longer sitting. Sandra felt a thrill of victory pulse in her chest. She kept her expression neutral and turned her attention back to her drink. She heard the sound of steady footsteps approaching her position at the bar. She didn’t turn around right away. She let him navigate through the crowd, wanting him to commit to the approach. The man stepped into the empty space beside her, closing the distance between their bodies. Sandra turned her head, feigning mild surprise at his arrival.
He stood near enough for her to smell the expensive cologne radiating from his suit. He looked down at her with an appreciative, hungry gaze, his eyes taking in the red dress and the prominent cleavage it displayed. He admired her youth and her confidence. Sandra offered him the same inviting, seductive smile she practiced in the mirror. She let the silence stretch between them, as she enjoyed the power of making him wait. She waited for him to make the first move, knowing she had already won the encounter.
“Hi there, beautiful,” the man said. “My name is Francis.”
❖
Sandra blinked. Her vision focused on the mirror in front of her, snapping her out of the memory. Twenty-five years vanished in a single heartbeat, replacing the crowded Los Angeles nightclub with the quiet luxury of her master bathroom. She stared at her current reflection. The effortless, untouched youthfulness of her twenty-three-year-old self existed only in photographs now. Back then, she relied on her natural glowing skin and a low-cut red dress to ensnare her prey. Today, she required constant, expensive maintenance to preserve her status.
She examined her forty-eight-year-old face. The natural elasticity of her youth was gone, replaced by the tight, surgically pulled skin resulting from multiple expensive facelifts. She picked up a makeup brush and applied another layer of foundation to mask the inevitable signs of aging. She meticulously contoured her cheeks to manufacture sharp, prominent cheekbones, drawing attention away from any softening features. She filled in her arched eyebrows with precise, deliberate strokes and coated her overlined lips in a bright, glossy red lacquer.
She set the brush down and ran a manicured hand down the side of her neck. The constant nips and tucks were a desperate war against time, and she felt the creeping dread that she was fighting a losing battle. Gravity pulled at her flesh, and every new, subtle wrinkle sent a spike of panic through her chest. She needed to look perfect. She needed to maintain the illusion of flawless, ageless beauty to keep her confidence high and her insecurities buried. The platinum blonde-haired woman turned her attention to her torso and unclasped her silk robe, letting the fabric pool around her ankles.
Her original breast implants, bought by that long-forgotten boyfriend, had been swapped out and upsized multiple times over the decades. She now boasted an enormous, surgically enhanced bust that demanded attention and dominated her frame. She reached for a tight vintage corset and wrapped the restrictive garment around her waist. She pulled the laces tight, forcing her fleshy curves into a dramatic, exaggerated hourglass shape. The stiff boning dug into her ribs and pushed her plump breasts upward until they spilled dangerously over the top of the dark satin fabric. She adjusted the cups, making sure her deep cleavage took center stage. The constriction felt agonizing, but she welcomed the pain. It reminded her that she still possessed a body capable of bringing men to their knees and bending them to her will.
She stepped back from the vanity and walked into her sprawling master bedroom. She paid for this opulent Malibu townhouse using the settlements from three separate divorces. Francis had been her first triumph. He gave her a taste of high society and funded her initial taste for luxury before she left him six years ago. He passed away 3 years later. She secured her next two husbands by using her sensual curves, her plumper lips, and her undeniable expertise in the bedroom. She knew exactly how to arch her back, how to spread her legs, how to moan, and how to make a rich older man feel like he had conquered the world. She traded her sexuality for sprawling estates and limitless bank accounts. She seduced them, drained their finances through clever divorce settlements, and secured a life of luxury without ever working a traditional job in her life.
Sandra sat on the edge of her plush bed and crossed her bare legs. Her mind drifted away from her past lovers and settled on the one person who refused to succumb to her charms. Chloe had been actively dodging her phone calls for two straight weeks. Sandra hated being ignored. She raised her daughter to appreciate the finer things in life. She wanted Chloe to use her dark-blonde hair and firm, athletic figure to attract wealthy suitors, just as she had. A young, tight body was the most valuable currency a woman possessed, and Sandra expected her daughter to spend it wisely while it lasted.
Instead, Chloe embraced a frustrating modern feminism. The girl insisted on earning her own wages by pouring coffee at Starbucks while studying microbiology. Chloe lived in a small apartment and hid her natural curves under baggy t-shirts and boring leggings. She wore minimal makeup and pulled her hair back into a mundane ponytail, actively rejecting the power of her own femininity. She refused to touch Sandra’s fortune, operating with a stubborn independence that drove Sandra insane. The rejection felt like a personal attack on everything Sandra stood for. Worse still, Chloe wasted her prime years playing lovers with Matt Davies.
Sandra curled her painted lips into a sneer at the thought of the boy. Matt dropped out of a real college to work at his dad’s chop shop. He wore faded vintage rock t-shirts, worn denim jeans, and a rebellious black leather jacket. He offered zero financial security and zero ambition beyond his dream of opening a motorcycle shop in the valley. He possessed a slight build and stood shorter than the men Sandra preferred. He relied on a rugged, scruffy charisma to charm her daughter, lacking the money to provide proper luxury. Sandra found his unpretentious attitude sickening. She knew her daughter was throwing her youth away on a dead-end romance.
She refused to let Chloe ruin her life. Sandra needed to step in and correct her daughter’s path before her youthful beauty began to fade. She stood up from the bed and walked over to her nightstand, checking the silver analog clock. Chloe worked her barista job on Thursday afternoons, and her shift lasted for another two hours. If her daughter refused to pick up the phone, Sandra would orchestrate a face-to-face confrontation. She would track her daughter down and arrange a dinner to properly highlight Matt’s undeniable shortcomings.
The older woman walked into her expansive walk-in closet. She bypassed her casual wear and selected a tight, dark red pencil skirt that matched her lipstick. She slid the skirt up her thighs and zipped it over her hips. The restrictive fabric forced her to stand with perfect posture and limited her stride to short, provocative steps. She chose a plunging white blouse to complete the outfit, leaving the top buttons undone to showcase the swell of her corset-bound breasts. She picked out a quilted designer handbag and slipped on a pair of six-inch red stiletto heels. The shoes forced her to balance on her toes, accentuating the curve of her calves and the sensual sway of her rear. It wasn’t comfortable. But Sandra knew that there was a price to beauty and elegance, and she didn’t mind paying it.
She returned to the full-length mirror for one final inspection. She adjusted her voluminous platinum blonde extensions, ensuring the teased locks fell perfectly over her bare shoulders. She practiced a sharp, welcoming smile, masking her inner desperation with a layer of glamor. She turned on her heel and strutted out of the master bedroom. The woman walked down the grand staircase of her Malibu home, her heels clicking against the marble steps. She reached the front door, gripped the brass handle, and stepped out into the California heat, determined to break down Chloe’s relationship and knock some sense into her ungrateful daughter.
❖
Sandra stepped onto the sun-baked concrete of the Malibu sidewalk. The afternoon heat radiated from the pavement, but she ignored the temperature. She had a mission to accomplish. Her six-inch red stiletto shoes clicked sharply against the pavement with each step. The dark red pencil skirt restricted her stride, forcing her to take deliberate, measured paces as always. The tight garment demanded perfect posture. She kept her chin raised and her shoulders pulled back, projecting an aura of untouchable confidence. She carried her designer handbag in the crook of her elbow. She walked with purpose, heading toward the commercial district located two blocks away.
She focused her mind on the upcoming confrontation. Chloe had evaded her for two weeks, and Sandra refused to tolerate it. She was her mother, and the young woman needed to learn respect. She formulated the exact arguments she needed to use. Chloe would not be able to run away or hang up the phone while on the clock, and Sandra intended to use the public setting to her advantage, knowing her daughter hated causing a scene.
The woman navigated a slight incline on the sidewalk, letting the muscles in her calves flex against the height of her heels. She hated the fact that her daughter worked a menial service job. Pouring coffee for ungrateful strangers was an insult to the pristine genetics Sandra passed down. Chloe possessed a firm figure and a beautiful face, yet she chose to hide behind an ugly green apron. Sandra spent her entire life teaching her daughter the value of physical beauty and how to use it. She demonstrated how to leverage curves and a pretty smile to extract wealth and respect from older, successful men.
Instead of following that blueprint, Chloe embraced a pathetic fantasy of self-reliance. Chloe refused to wear proper makeup, choosing a plain, unexciting face that offended Sandra’s sensibilities. The girl wore baggy tops and utilitarian bottoms that did nothing to accentuate her figure. She actively rejected the power of her own femininity. The rejection felt like a personal attack on everything Sandra stood for. Sandra spent hours every morning applying foundation, contouring her features, and lacing herself into corsets just to maintain her standard. Chloe threw her natural gifts away, preferring to smell like roasted coffee beans rather than expensive French perfume. Worse still was the type of men her young daughter chose to date. Over her dead body.
Sandra knew she needed to step in and correct her daughter’s path. She needed to expose Matt for the inadequate boy he was. She visualized the upcoming dinner party. She would serve expensive wine and complicated dishes designed to make the boy feel out of place. She would ask pointed questions about his income, his savings, and his ability to provide for a family. She would highlight the stark contrast between his blue-collar reality and the lavish lifestyle Sandra offered. She wanted to watch him squirm in her dining chairs. She wanted to make him feel small. She would systematically break his confidence and prove to Chloe that he was unworthy of her time. The boy had no idea what kind of woman he was dealing with. Sandra destroyed wealthy, powerful men in divorce courts. A twenty-three-year-old college dropout would be child’s play.
Sandra turned the corner, entering a busier section of the street. She maintained her provocative stride, letting her hips sway with each step. She passed a row of well-cut hedges and a boutique clothing store. She enjoyed the sensation of eyes on her body. She thrived on attention. She needed the validation to soothe the underlying panic of her fading youth. The expensive makeup and the tight corset served as armor against the relentless march of time, and she relied on the lustful stares of strangers to confirm her armor still held strong.
A construction site occupied the empty lot across the street. The skeletal frame of a new commercial building rose from the dirt. Dozens of men in hard hats and neon vests moved around the scaffolding. Sandra heard the loud hum of machinery and the shouts of the crew. She kept her gaze straight ahead, but she angled her body slightly toward the site. She knew her dark red skirt and her plunging white blouse presented a striking image against the mundane street.
A sharp, loud catcall pierced through the noise of the construction equipment. A second whistle followed, high-pitched and demanding.
The older woman felt a familiar thrill pulse in her chest. A wave of heat flushed her skin that had nothing to do with the California sun. She loved the unfiltered admiration of working-class men. They lacked the refinement to hide their desires. Their catcalls provided instant, undeniable proof of her sexual power. She paused her stride, turning her head toward the chain-link fence separating the site from the sidewalk.
She bit her lower lip, pressing her painted mouth into a coy, inviting smile. She reached up and tossed her blonde hair over her shoulder, ensuring the men received a clear view of her exposed cleavage. She arched her back, emphasizing the dramatic hourglass shape created by her vintage corset. She lifted her free hand and offered the crew a playful, flirtatious wave.
A young woman walked past Sandra on the sidewalk. She wore denim shorts and a simple tank top, her natural brunette hair tied in a loose bun. She possessed an effortless, unmanufactured beauty. The young woman glanced at the construction site and rolled her eyes in annoyance, clearly accustomed to the unwanted attention. She continued walking, passing directly between Sandra and the fence.
One of the workers leaning against the scaffolding spotted Sandra’s playful wave. He cupped his hands around his mouth to amplify his voice.
“Not you, fatass!”
“We’re looking at the brunette!” another worker shouted.
A chorus of crude laughter erupted from the scaffolding. The men pointed and chuckled, dismissing Sandra’s carefully orchestrated display in favor of the young woman walking away.
The flirtatious smile died on Sandra’s red lips. She dropped her arm to her side, her manicured fingers curling tight against her palms. A flush of hot humiliation spread across her bare chest and crawled up her neck, staining her contoured cheeks. She stood frozen on the pavement. The men continued their jeers, their voices teasing and unforgiving as they turned their backs on her. They preferred a younger woman.
Sandra spun around on her stilettos. She forced her legs into a faster stride, speed-walking away from the fence. She ignored the fading laughter behind her, but the mocking sound echoed in her ears. Her chest heaved with short, sharp breaths against the rigid boning of her corset. The rejection confirmed the insecurities she fought hard to bury. Her youth was fading. The tight skirts and the expensive surgeries could no longer guarantee the universal lust she craved.
The embarrassment twisted into a dark, vindictive anger. She could no longer rely on her own body to command every man she encountered. The painful realization forced her focus back onto her daughter. Chloe had firm, unblemished skin that the older woman knew would draw desire without even trying. Sandra felt a bitter surge of envy. If she could no longer wield youth as her primary weapon, she would find someone who could.
She clenched her jaw, her painted mouth forming a thin, unforgiving line. She would not let that valuable currency be squandered on a greasy mechanic. She marched the final block toward the coffee shop, ready to unleash her frustration. She intended to tear Matt apart and mold her daughter into the seductive femme fatale she was born to be.
❖
Sandra pushed through the glass doors and stepped into the coffee shop. She bypassed the line of waiting customers and walked straight toward the pickup counter. She kept her chin elevated, ignoring the patrons sitting at the small tables. She scanned the employees rushing behind the registers until her eyes locked onto her target.
Chloe stood at the far end of the counter, handing a paper cup to a young man. Sandra watched her daughter offer the customer a cute smile. So much potential, she thought to herself. The dark blonde girl wore a black t-shirt beneath the standard green uniform apron. The bulky fabric hid her slim, toned physique, swallowing her feminine curves in yards of cheap material. She paired the top with plain black leggings and canvas running shoes. Her hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, and her face only bore subtle eyeliner and neutral gloss on her lips. She was the image of the modern-day feminist, and it made the older woman sick.
Chloe turned back to the espresso machine and caught sight of the platinum blonde extensions waiting near the hand-off counter. She let out a frustrated sigh and rolled her eyes. She had spent the last two weeks avoiding phone calls and text messages, and it was the best fortnight of her life. She knew dodging her mother forever was an impossible task. Sandra always found a way to force a confrontation. Chloe hated dealing with the inevitable performative drama whenever her mom was around.
The young barista wiped her hands on her apron and walked down the length of the counter. She kept her expression neutral, refusing to give her mother the satisfaction of a visible reaction. She prided herself on her independence and her ability to remain unfazed by the extravagant world Sandra represented.
“Mom,” Chloe said. “What are you doing here?”
“I haven’t heard from you in ages, Chloe,” Sandra replied, offering a wide, maternal smile. “I wanted to make sure you were safe.”
“I’m fine, Mom,” the young woman said. “I’ve just been busy with school and work.”
Sandra let her gaze drag up and down her daughter’s uniform. She made no effort to hide her distaste for the black t-shirt and the unstyled hair. “You shouldn’t have to work like this. You have a trust fund sitting untouched in the bank.”
“We’ve talked about this a hundred times, Mom,” Chloe said, crossing her arms over her chest. “I like earning my own money. I prefer paying my own way and building a career.”
“A career in a coffee shop?” Sandra asked, arching a perfect eyebrow. “You possess far more valuable assets than this, darling. A smart woman uses her beauty more. You’re a gorgeous woman. You should let me take you shopping. We could find a dress that actually flatters your figure instead of hiding it.”
“I like my clothes,” Chloe said. “I don’t need a new wardrobe, and I don’t need a lecture right now. I’m in the middle of a shift. My manager is watching.”
“I just hate seeing you squander your youth,” Sandra said, stepping closer to the counter. “You’re a gorgeous young woman who could secure any future you desire. You could have men lining up to pay for your tuition and buy you a house. Instead, you’re standing behind a counter and serving them lattes.”
“I don’t want a man to buy me a house,” Chloe stated, her voice hardening. “I want equality. I want to stand on my own two feet without owing my life to a rich husband. Women don’t need to trade their bodies for protection anymore, Mom. We can be successful in our own right.”
Sandra bit the inside of her cheek to stop herself from scowling. She viewed her daughter’s branch of feminism as a foolish trap designed to keep beautiful women poor and overworked. Equality sounded exhausting. Did these women not understand that a girl can own the world by batting her eyelashes and showing a little skin? However, she knew better than to push the debate while her daughter was surrounded by coworkers who felt the same way.
“Anyway, I didn’t come here to argue about politics,” Sandra said. “I came to invite you to dinner. I want to host you at the townhouse tonight. We have a lot of catching up to do.”
Chloe shifted her weight from one foot to the other. She hated the dinners at her mom’s house. It was just an excuse for her mother to critique every life choice. She wanted to decline the invitation and retreat to the safety of her own apartment.
“I have plans tonight,” she said, offering a polite excuse.
Sandra widened her smile, refusing to accept the rejection. “Don’t be ridiculous. Matt can come as well. I haven’t seen the boy in months.”
Chloe felt a knot form in her stomach. Sandra never invited Matt to dinner unless she had a specific reason to criticize him. The older woman despised the young man, and she used every opportunity to point out his blue-collar background. Chloe wanted to protect her boyfriend from the snide remarks, but she also knew they needed to break their news eventually. They could not keep their big secret forever, and facing the music tonight might be the easiest way to rip the bandage off.
“Are you sure you want Matt there?” Chloe asked, testing the waters.
“Of course,” Sandra replied. “He’s an important part of your life right now. I want to spend some quality time with both of you.”
Chloe uncrossed her arms. She rested her hands in the pockets of her apron. She weighed her options. Announcing in the safety of the townhouse might prevent Sandra from bouncing off the walls. She knew the dinner would be a battle. She just hoped Matt was prepared to stand his ground against the manipulation.
“Fine,” Chloe said. “We’ll be there. We can’t stay late. Matt has an early shift tomorrow.”
“That’s wonderful news,” Sandra said. She clapped her hands together in a show of maternal delight. “I expect you both at seven o’clock. We can have a lovely evening together.”
“We actually have something to share with you,” Chloe added. She let the hint slip before she could stop herself.
Sandra kept her smile plastered firmly in place. Her stomach performed a sickening flip. “I can’t wait to hear it. I’ll see you tonight, darling.”
Sandra turned and walked toward the exit and stepped back out onto the sidewalk. The moment she cleared the storefront, the sweet facade vanished. Her red-lipped mouth curled into a vicious scowl. Her mind raced through the possibilities of Chloe’s impending announcement.
The vague hint panicked her. She knew her daughter possessed a stubborn streak. A terrifying thought pierced her mind. She pictured her attractive daughter carrying a child sired by a boy who fixed broken motorcycles for a living. The idea of Chloe sharing genetics with Matt made Sandra nauseous. The prospect of a grandchild with a greasemonkey permanently stained into its DNA felt like a cruel joke. She couldn’t bear the thought of her daughter sharing the news that that lowlife had knocked her up. She couldn’t let that happen. She wouldn’t let that happen.
❖
Chloe unlocked the front door and stepped inside her apartment, tossing her keys onto the wooden table before pulling the green uniform apron over her head. She draped the fabric over a dining chair with a sigh of relief, grateful to be out of the coffee shop and back in her own space. Sandra still believed her daughter lived in a cramped campus dorm room with another female student, remaining oblivious to the fact that Chloe had actually signed a lease for this one-bedroom apartment four months ago. Keeping the living arrangement a strict secret felt necessary, as Chloe knew her mother would orchestrate a catastrophic meltdown if she ever discovered her daughter shared a bed with the mechanic she despised so much.
The sound of a key turning in the lock drew her attention toward the entryway, and the door swung open to reveal Chloe’s boyfriend, Matt. He closed the door behind him with an exhausted exhale, looking tired from a long day at the shop. Though he was on the shorter side with a slight build, Matt carried a natural confidence that always gave Chloe butterflies. His dark hair sat in an overgrown, messy style above a scruffy shadow along his jawline, and he wore his signature black leather jacket over a faded vintage band t-shirt, standard denim jeans, and protective steel-toe boots.
He lacked the polished presentation Sandra demanded from men, and certainly lacked the age, but Chloe adored his unpretentious authenticity. Matt had walked away from a traditional four-year university at nineteen, choosing instead to build a life with his hands at his father’s garage. He spent his days learning the intricate mechanics of engines, taking trade classes at the local community college to sharpen his skills. His biggest ambition was to open his own custom motorcycle shop, and Chloe supported and encouraged his dream.
“Hey,” Matt said, offering her a warm smile.
“Hey,” Chloe replied, wrapping her arms around her boyfriend’s neck before giving him a kiss. “How was the shop?”
“Busy,” Matt answered, shrugging the leather jacket off his shoulders and tossing it onto a nearby chair, careful not to touch his partner with his hands. “Dad had me pulling a transmission apart all afternoon, so my hands are covered in grease and dirt. I need to wash up before I touch anything else.”
He walked past her and headed down the short hallway to their bathroom. Chloe heard the squeak of the plumbing and the rush of running water. She leaned against the kitchen counter, listening to the splashing sounds as he scrubbed his dirty hands clean. She needed to break the news about her afternoon visitor, figuring it was safest to do it while he was occupied.
“My mom came to see me today,” Chloe called out.
The running water stopped instantly, leaving a tense silence hanging in the air.
“Did you tell her the big news?” Matt asked through the open doorway.
“I couldn’t do it,” the young blonde said, crossing the room to stand closer to the hall. “It didn’t feel like the right time, especially since she cornered me in the middle of my shift while my manager was watching.”
Matt appeared in the bathroom doorway while drying his arms with a hand towel. He tossed the towel over his shoulder and leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms over his chest as his expression shifted into a protective frown.
“She cornered you at work,” Matt said, shaking his head. “When is the right time to tell a woman like that? She never listens to a word you say.”
“I know,” Chloe said. “But she invited us to dinner tonight, and I figured it would be best to tell her there together so we can face her as a team.”
Matt groaned, tilting his head back against the doorframe. “I don’t think I can survive another evening with your mom, Chloe.”
Chloe chuckled, walking toward her man and resting her hands on his chest. “If you’re going to be part of the family, you’d better learn to play nice. We just have to survive a few hours, drop the news, and leave before she starts throwing plates.”
Matt paused for a moment. “I guess I can manage that,” he told his beautiful woman. “Are you going to wear the ring?”
“No,” Chloe said, shaking her head. “I want to tell her first, otherwise she’ll notice it the second we walk through the door and hijack the entire conversation.”
Matt dropped his arms and stepped forward to meet her in the hallway, wrapping his arms around her waist to pull her flush against his chest. His hands felt rough from physical labor, yet his touch remained gentle and grounding as he looked down into her eyes.
“I’d do anything for you, babe,” Matt said.
He leaned down and pressed a deep, lingering kiss against her lips. Chloe melted against her man, savoring the familiar comfort of his embrace. The kiss carried a spark of excitement, and Chloe was addicted to it. Matt slid one hand up her back, tangling his fingers in her messy ponytail as he kissed her with a slow, deliberate heat. The woman parted her lips, letting him deepen the kiss while the tension of the afternoon faded away under his touch. His tongue swept inside her mouth, tasting like mint and coffee, sending a warm flush down her spine.
Matt pulled back just enough to catch his breath, his eyes warm and sincere as he rested his forehead against hers.
“We have to be there at seven,” the blonde whispered.
Matt turned his head and looked at the digital clock resting on the hallway table, letting out a long, reluctant sigh.
“I guess I’d better start getting ready then,” her new fiancé said.
He released his hold on her waist and stepped past her, walking toward their shared bedroom. Chloe watched him go, feeling a swell of affection for the man she planned to marry. She knew the upcoming dinner would be a battlefield, but she felt ready as long as he stood beside her. They just needed to navigate Sandra’s inevitable theatrics, announce their engagement, and return to their quiet life together. Chloe took a deep breath, steeling her nerves for the confrontation ahead, and followed her fiancé into the bedroom to prepare for the evening.
❖
“If that chop shop lowlife got my daughter pregnant, I’m going to kill him.”
Sandra lowered a crystal glass from her painted lips, taking a slow sip of expensive scotch to cool her rising temper. She sat on a leather sofa inside a sprawling Beverly Hills estate, enjoying the quiet elegance far removed from the mundane coffee shop she visited earlier in the afternoon. A wealthy older man sat across from her, a wide, amused grin spreading across his handsome face. Richard Wells possessed a silver fox charm and a ruthless business acumen that matched Sandra’s own predatory nature well.
They shared a scorching, passionate affair over a decade ago, and Sandra still remembered the way he commanded her in the bedroom. He demanded submission and rewarded her obedience with diamond necklaces and lavish vacations, teaching her the true value of her physical assets. The sexual fire eventually cooled into a transactional friendship built on mutual respect and shared manipulation. She trusted him because he possessed no moral compass, making him the perfect sounding board for her current crisis.
“You always were a vicious creature, Sandra,” Richard chuckled, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. “I suppose that is why we always got along.”
“I refuse to let her throw away her gorgeous looks on a boy who fixes cars for a living,” Sandra said, crossing her bare legs. “Chloe hinted that they have a big announcement tonight at dinner. If she tells me the bastard knocked her up, I will force her into the clinic myself.”
“You can’t control every aspect of her life, Sandra,” the older man chuckled, taking a casual drink. “She is a grown woman, after all.”
“She is a stubborn child who thinks she is a feminist,” Sandra countered, gripping her glass tighter. “She needs a man like you, Richard. She needs someone wise and powerful to put her in her place and remind her of her true value.”
“I pass, thanks,” Richard grinned, waving his hand in a dismissive gesture. “Your daughter is beautiful, I’ll give you that. But she is a stubborn bitch. I’m done with these modern, free-thinking women.”
Sandra uncrossed her legs and leaned forward, resting her hands on her lap as she offered him an intrigued, conspiratorial smile. “What exactly are you looking for, then?”
The older man set his glass down on the glass coffee table, resting his hands on his knees as his expression shifted into a serious, dominant stare. “I want an obedient, plastic trophy wife. I want a woman who submits without question and keeps her mouth shut unless I allow her to open it.”
“That sounds like a tall order in this day and age. I mean, no offense, but you’re not getting any younger, Richard, and money will only get you so far,” the platinum blonde purred, enjoying the raw honesty of his vulgar demands.
“You could always take me up on the offer, little dove,” the silver-haired man grinned as he took a sip of his drink. “We had some wild times back in the day. You would make a perfect obedient doll, I think.”
Sandra laughed, a bright sound echoing in the fancy room. “I think I’ve done my time. I love my independence too much for that these days, Richard, and I already have enough of my own money.”
“It was worth a try,” he said with a shrug, leaning back against the plush cushions. “But honestly, I want a bimbo who lives only to service my needs. I want fake breasts, plump lips, and a waist trained down by corsets until she can barely breathe. I want a woman who understands her only purpose is my pleasure, and I decide how she shows herself off to the world.”
“And in exchange for this performative obedience?” Sandra asked, arching an eyebrow.
“What do you think? I am an old man with a vast fortune,” Richard stated, his tone matter-of-fact. “I will make sure my bitches are taken care of, and she will, of course, inherit my fortune once I pass away.”
Sandra smiled, raising her crystal glass in a mocking salute. “Well, good luck finding your perfect little doll, Richard. There are plenty of wannabe actresses out here in LA.”
“Oh, I have my feelers out,” Richard laughed, finishing his scotch. “There is always a girl looking for a shortcut to the top, so I just have to find the right one.”
He set his empty glass aside and glanced at the gold clock sitting on a nearby side table. The brass hands indicated the afternoon was quickly slipping away.
“As much as I enjoy our catch-ups, you have a ticking clock of your own, and I don’t mean your biology,” Richard chuckled, pointing toward the timepiece. “If your daughter is arriving at seven, you’d better get back home.”
“You are right,” she said, picking up her handbag. “I need to get home and make sure everything is perfect.”
“Give them hell, Sandra,” the man offered, flashing her a wicked grin.
“I always do,” she replied, turning on her heel and strutting out of the living room, giving her chubby backside an extra sway as she left. Time to deal with the trash.

Matt turned the ignition off and pulled the keys from his battered car, staring at the wide front of his fiancée’s mom’s townhouse. He shifted in his seat, adjusting the collar of his clean shirt. He had traded his dirty work clothes for a pair of dark jeans and a simple black button-down, hoping to present a respectable front for the evening. Chloe sat beside him in the passenger seat, offering a reassuring smile. She wore a simple navy blue sundress and a pair of comfortable flats, brushing her dark blonde hair over her shoulders. They stepped out of the vehicle and walked up the paved driveway together, their hands intertwined as they approached the entrance.
Matt lifted his knuckles and knocked twice on the polished brass double doors. He shifted his weight, anticipating the usual cold glare and the condescending remarks from the evil future mother-in-law. The brass handle turned, and the door swung inward to reveal Sandra.
Matt blinked, confused by the sight before him. Sandra stood in the doorway wearing a bright yellow 1950s-style housewife dress, complete with a flared skirt and a pristine white ruffled apron tied around her waist. The garment presented a jarring contrast to the tight, provocative outfits she normally favored. The vintage dress still offered a low-cut neckline, presenting the goods the older woman was so proud of. The bodice cinched tightly around her waist, pushing her surgical enhancements upward. She had pulled her platinum blonde extensions back into an elegant, restrained updo, replacing her usual red lipstick with a soft, peachy gloss. She looked like a sinister character ripped straight from a retro television commercial.
“Chloe, darling,” Sandra cooed, throwing her arms open with a wide, welcoming smile.
She stepped forward and wrapped her daughter in a warm, enthusiastic hug, pressing her corseted bust against the younger woman. Chloe returned the embrace with hesitant stiffness, clearly thrown off balance by the unexpected display of maternal affection. Sandra pulled back and rested her manicured hands on Chloe’s shoulders, beaming with a weird sweetness that made Matt’s stomach turn.
“It’s so wonderful to see you,” Sandra said, her voice dripping with honey. “You look lovely tonight, sweetheart.”
The platinum-blonde-haired woman shifted her gaze toward Matt, and the warmth in her eyes instantly vanished, replaced by a cold assessment. She maintained the wide smile on her lips, stepping forward to wrap her arms around him in a brief, rigid embrace. She patted his back twice with stiff fingers, ensuring the contact lasted barely a second before she pulled away.
“Matthew,” she said, forcing a cheerful tone. “I’m glad you could make it.”
“Thanks for having me,” Matt replied, keeping his voice steady and polite as he stood his ground. “Thanks for having us.”
“Come inside, both of you,” Sandra insisted, stepping aside and gesturing toward the expansive foyer. “Dinner is almost ready, and I want everything to be perfect for tonight.”
Chloe and Matt stepped over the threshold, entering the wide entryway of Sandra’s abode while the older woman closed the solid front doors behind them, locking the deadbolt with a sharp click that echoed through the quiet space.
“I just need to check on the roast in the oven,” Sandra announced as she headed toward an open door. “Make yourselves comfortable in the living room, and I will be right back with some appetizers.”
She disappeared through the arched doorway, leaving the couple alone in the grand hallway. The sharp click of her high heels faded against the imported marble floor, giving way to an eerie, unnatural silence.
Matt leaned closer to his fiancée, lowering his voice into a conspiratorial whisper. “I think we need to drop the news and bolt.”
Chloe turned to look at him, her eyebrows raised in amusement. “What’re you talking about?”
“Did you see her?” Matt whispered, gesturing wildly toward the empty hallway. “She looks like a psychotic Stepford Wife. I’ve never seen her act like that, and it’s creeping me out. She’s definitely plotting something crazy.”
Chloe playfully punched him in the arm, letting out a soft laugh. “Don’t be a pussy, Matt. That’s the nicest I’ve ever seen her talk to you. Be grateful.”
Matt rubbed his arm, throwing a nervous glance down the empty hallway where his future mother-in-law had just vanished. “I’m telling you, this whole sweet housewife routine feels like a trap. If she comes back out here holding a butcher knife and reciting voodoo chants, I’m running straight out that front door and leaving you to fend for yourself.”
Chloe smiled and shook her head, grabbing his hand to pull him forward into the house. “You are being ridiculous. Relax.”
They walked into the wide living room, navigating around oversized white leather sofas and the glass coffee table. A tall stone fireplace dominated one side of the room, while wide windows offered an uninterrupted view of the darkening Pacific Ocean. The sheer amount of wealth on display always made Matt feel out of place, as if he were a trespasser waiting to be caught by security. He sat down on the edge of the nearest couch, resting his rough hands on his knees while keeping his eyes fixed on the arched doorway leading to the kitchen. Chloe took a seat right beside him, crossing her bare legs and offering him a reassuring squeeze on his tense shoulder.
The silence in the townhouse felt unnatural, wrapping around them and making the air feel thick and difficult to breathe. Matt knew the yellow vintage dress and the sweet maternal smiles were just a carefully constructed illusion designed to hide Sandra’s true predatory nature. He knew the older woman hated him with a burning passion, and she despised the fact that a young working-class man like him had captured her beautiful daughter’s heart. He tapped his boot against the hardwood floor, counting the slow seconds passing by as he listened for the sound of her returning footsteps. He just had to endure this suffocating performance a little longer, wait for the right moment to drop their big news, and then they could finally escape this uncomfortable house and start their lives together.
❖
Sandra reappeared in the arched doorway holding a silver tray laden with delicate hors d’oeuvres, her peachy lips sporting a welcoming smile. She walked into the living area with a practiced grace, setting the tray down on the glass coffee table before gesturing toward the adjacent room.
“The roast needs a few more minutes to finish resting,” the older woman announced, clasping her hands together in front of her white ruffled apron. “Why don’t we move into the dining room, and we can enjoy a few appetizers while we wait?”
Chloe offered her mother a polite nod, then stood up from the sofa and smoothed the skirt of her dress. Matt followed her lead, rising to his feet and trailing behind the two women as they walked into the formal dining space. The room featured a long dark wooden table set for three, adorned with fine china, crystal water goblets, and polished silver cutlery. The intimidating setup felt designed to make anyone outside of Sandra’s wealthy social circle feel inadequate and out of place.
Sandra took her seat at the head of the table, gesturing for Chloe and Matt to sit across from her on the adjacent sides. Matt pulled a high-backed chair out for his fiancée, waiting until Chloe settled in before taking his own seat.
“So, Matthew,” Sandra began, passing a small plate of appetizers across the mahogany surface. “Chloe tells me you are still working at your father’s garage.”
“Yes, ma’am,” the man replied, keeping his voice respectful as he accepted the plate and set it between himself and his fiancée. “We primarily do collision repair and engine rebuilds on cars, but I take business classes at the community college at night, and my ultimate goal is to open my own custom motorcycle shop in a few years.”
“Fascinating,” Sandra mused, resting her chin on her hand while she fixed him with an unblinking, analytical stare. “And does that sort of work provide a sustainable income for a family, or is it more of a hobby for young men trying to find themselves before they secure a real career?”
Chloe bristled beside him, her protective instincts flaring up at the thinly veiled insult wrapped in a polite tone. “Matt does great, Mom, and he works hard for everything he has.”
“Working hard is an admirable trait,” Sandra replied, her voice remaining artificially sweet as she picked up a linen napkin and draped it across her lap. “I merely worry about your financial security, darling, because love rarely pays the mortgage in Southern California.”
Matt felt a familiar flush of frustration crawl up his neck, recognizing the psychological warfare she waged against him time and time again. She wanted him to lose his temper, hoping he would prove her right by acting aggressively in front of her daughter, but he refused to give her the satisfaction.
“We do fine,” the young man said, reaching under the table to rest his hand on Chloe’s knee. “We take care of each other.”
Chloe placed her hand over his, lacing her fingers through his grip to anchor herself against her mother’s passive-aggressive games. She decided she was done playing along for the evening, knowing that dragging the conversation out would only give Sandra more ammunition to attack the man she loved.
“Actually, we have some news to share with you,” Chloe announced, her voice ringing clear and steady through the quiet room as she squared her shoulders. “We didn’t just come here for dinner.”
Sandra paused, her long-nailed, manicured fingers freezing over her napkin as a cold spike of dread pierced her chest. She maintained her pleasant expression, but her heart pounded a frantic pace against her ribs as she braced herself for the worst. She fully expected her daughter to confess to an accidental pregnancy that would tie their family to this working-class mechanic for the rest of their lives, and she readied herself to suggest a quiet medical appointment.
“We’re getting married!” Chloe exclaimed, a smile breaking across her face as she looked at Matt. “Matt popped the question two weeks ago. We were just waiting for the right time to tell you.”
Sandra sat frozen at the head of the table, her mind reeling from the announcement, her facial muscles twitching uncontrollably. She fought a desperate physical battle to keep the corners of her lips turned upward, struggling against the fake smile that threatened to shatter into a vicious scowl. The total rage boiling beneath her composed exterior demanded release, and she dug her red nails into her palms to ground herself. This was worse than pregnancy!
Chloe leaned forward, her brow furrowing in concern as she watched her mother’s strained, twitching expression. “Mom? Are you okay? You look pale.”
Sandra drew a sharp breath through her nose, blinking away the red haze clouding her vision as she shoved her hatred deep into the dark corners of her mind. She pasted the joyful mask firmly back into place before the silence stretched too far, forcing her eyes to crinkle with artificial warmth.
“I’m just surprised, darling,” she managed to say, her voice shaking slightly before she cleared her throat and pitched it into a bright, celebratory tone. “This is wonderful news. You caught me off guard, but I am thrilled for both of you.”
Chloe let out a long exhale, squeezing Matt’s hand as a wave of relief washed over her face. She had prepared herself for a screaming match, but the enthusiastic response eased the tension in her shoulders.
“We wanted to wait until we were sitting down together,” Chloe laughed, a blush rising to her cheeks. “I didn’t know how you would react.”
“I want nothing but happiness for my only daughter,” the seething older woman said, clasping her hands together on the table. “This calls for a proper celebration, and we can’t just sit here eating appetizers after an announcement like this. I have a bottle of vintage champagne chilling in the kitchen. If there is ever an occasion for it, this is it.”
Matt watched the older woman push her chair back and stand up, noting the rigid stiffness in her posture as she smoothed the front of her dress. She turned and marched out of the dining room, disappearing through the arched doorway with a determined stride.
“See?” Chloe whispered, leaning over to kiss his cheek. “I told you it wouldn’t be so bad. She is actually happy for us.”
“I guess you were right,” Matt replied, offering a hesitant smile as he tried to ignore the nagging suspicion in his gut. “I owe her an apology for what I said earlier, I guess.”
The platinum-blonde-haired woman returned a few moments later, carrying a silver tray bearing three tall crystal flutes filled with bubbling champagne. She walked back into the dining room, smiling so widely that the expression crinkled the corners of her eyes. She stopped beside the mahogany table to distribute the drinks.
She placed a glass in front of Matt, setting the crystal base down gently onto the wood, and then positioned the second flute directly in front of her daughter. She picked up the final glass for herself, taking her position at the head of the table.
“I want to propose a toast,” the busty matriarch said, raising her crystal flute into the air as she looked back and forth between the young couple. “To Chloe and Matthew, and to a future that gives you exactly what you deserve.”
“To us,” Chloe smiled, raising her glass and clinking it against Matt’s flute.
Matt raised the crystal to his mouth, taking a long drink of the expensive champagne. The liquid tasted crisp and dry, sliding down his throat with a pleasant burn. He set the glass back down on the table, feeling a sudden rush of optimism about the evening and thinking that he could actually build a functional relationship with his fiancée’s mother moving forward.
Sandra sat down in her high-backed chair, resting her hands on the table while she stared silently at the couple. She didn’t offer any more conversation, simply watching them with an unblinking stillness that made the hairs on the back of Matt’s neck stand up. The quiet stretched out, growing thick and uncomfortable as the seconds ticked by.
“Is everything okay, Mom?” Chloe asked, shifting uneasily in her seat.
Chloe blinked, shaking her head as a sudden wave of dizziness hit her, causing the edges of her vision to blur until the crystal flutes on the table multiplied and smeared together. She raised a hand to her forehead, feeling a strange numbness creeping down her arms and settling into her fingertips.
Beside her, Matt let out a quiet groan, slumping forward until his chest hit the edge of the table as an unnatural exhaustion crashed over him. He tried to push himself back up, but his muscles refused to obey his commands, leaving him trapped in a slouched position. The room spun wildly out of control, and a cold sweat broke out across his forehead. He looked toward Chloe, his vision swimming as he watched her sway dangerously in her chair.
Sandra stood back up slowly. She reached down and untied the strings of her white apron, tossing the garment onto the floor with a look of disgust. She shed the sweet, domestic facade in a single instant, replacing it with a ruthless sneer.
“Did you honestly believe I would permit this marriage?” the woman asked, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper.
Chloe opened her mouth, fighting through the thick fog clouding her brain as she tried to form a response. She wanted to formulate a sentence, desperate to understand what was happening, but her tongue felt useless. A soft, incoherent gasp escaped her lips right before her eyes rolled back. She collapsed forward, her cheek hitting the smooth wood of the dining table as the powerful sedative dragged her into unconsciousness.
Matt tried to reach for her, his fingers twitching uselessly against his legs. He managed to tilt his head up, locking eyes with the platinum blonde woman standing over them. He saw the malice burning in her gaze, finally understanding the fatal mistake they had made by stepping into her home. He opened his mouth to shout, but darkness rushed in from the edges of his vision, swallowing him whole before he could make a sound. His head dropped onto the table with a dull thud, joining his fiancée in a deep, chemically induced sleep.
Sandra stood in the quiet dining room, looking down at the two unconscious bodies slumped across her dining set. She offered them a cruel, satisfied smile, pleased that the drugs in their drinks worked their magic without a hitch.
“Sweet dreams,” the woman whispered into the silence.
She turned away from the table, walking over to her purse resting on a nearby console. She pulled out her cell phone and dialed a number, ready to begin making the arrangements she needed to make this right.
End of Chapter One.
