It’s hard to express everything I like about this story without potentially spoiling some parts of it, so I’ll just say that it’s a really sexy drone story that’s good all the way through the epilogue.

Ada is pushed to make a choice about what she values, and how far she’s willing to go, when her boss changes the parameters of her big project. It doesn’t help that she has such an attractive roommate…

Besides sharing a title with one of the top three songs from the musical Hadestown, When the Chips are Down is a really good, focused story of sexy tech control with a smattering of the “soft control” exerted by capitalism as it’s background plot. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

It is a normal day at the arcade. People are chatting, playing games and having fun. And one arcade machine is contemplating its secret purpose.

I’ve been trying to decide for a week or two which Hypnotic Harlequin story to suggest, and I think it has to be this one. Short, focused, and good tech-control; I think it’s a good example of her writing style and a thoroughly good read.
