Prompt: "Virus"

Virus Killer

The 21st century had been hard. Seven actual global pandemics, and a couple dozen big scares.

But humanity held on, and, for the last three months, it seemed like it would be over.

The 22nd century was there, and nanomachines would annihilate all illnesses forever. My pride and joy, and my colleagues' too.

Of course, somebody had to ruin it all.

It started by changing us from the inside first, addressing some chemical imbalances. Sure, we noticed that people were nicer, but that was to be expected.

Then, the first physical modifications happened.

People started looking betterSexier. Again, not unexpected, but a lot of us started to worry that maybe it was happening too quickly.

It was.

I got the notification this morning.

The virus inside the nanomachines was insidious, changing the code just a little bit. Making sure that everyone injected would be nudged, their chemistry slowly twisted.

I and many others dove into the code, trying to find who created it.

But, the hours passed by. The search got more frantic. Around me, I could hear my colleagues panting.

Finding the author wasn't about justice anymore.

We wanted to find who to submit to.

Notes:

September 2020, so you probably can guess the inspiration for both the prompt and my writeup. For this, however, I actually focused more on the story structure than on the plot itself - which isn't too generic but still quite a bit cliché.

I don't think there's any specific inspiration for this. There's definitely ideas taken from Rikimaru's Resistance, though.
