Prompt: "Patience"

Automatic

It was an automatic process.

At some point, it would take over. I had seen the others. Everything left was a soulless body, doing what it's told like an automaton.

I couldn't wait.

When I signed up for the Hive, it was a dream come true. No more responsibilities. The promise of eternal servitude. It was a bit cultish. Maybe. I still wanted that.

My days were spent following orders. I did a lot of things. Scheduling. Patrolling. Maintenance. Sex. Life in the Hive wasn't dull.

But, after spending two months here, I was having second thoughts.

I still had to actively participate. To consciously think and follow each command. "Be patient", they had told me. "It's all part of the process. You have to fake it until you don't. Until you can't choose otherwise."

I wondered whether it really worked. Whether my mind would turn off and follow orders automatically. Maybe I should just try to... Stop pretending, just once. To check if it was working.

Another command came through my earpiece. I listened. I thought about disobeying...

And I obeyed. I had faked it, again. Just, be patient. I kept thinking to myself. It's part of the process.

Notes:

Ok, so in case you're wondering what are the #1 inspiration for my drone stories going forward. This is inspired mainly by Tabico's Rouge, and also by Trilby Else's Hive. If you're into dronification stuff in general, these are two main references you'll often find (and also two amazing stories).

There is also a hint of Tabico's Community and Neighbourhood watch.

The funny (?) part of this prompt is that I was completely uninspired for a while, and then it clicked and I ended up with six ideas, and writing up three of them.

So, without further ado, and in exclusivity, the next chapter will have two, nonofficial short fictions I also wrote for this prompt.
