I WILL do it! I WILL get caught up!

cws: noncon; implied magical torture
With my back up against the wall of the small store room to the side of the meeting room, I tried to breathe as slowly and quietly as possible. I wasn’t exactly outside of the realm of what the plan was; this was where I had wanted to end up. But the first of the Barons had arrived earlier than I had expected, and I hadn’t had quite enough time to finish investigating the room before finding a suitable hiding spot in the store room. I was, however, fairly sure that I had successfully hidden out of sight, for the time being at least.

Just to be safe, however, I creeped along the wall, still pressed up against it, until I came up to some crates that I could crouch behind.

Once I had calmed down, gotten my bearings, and hidden myself well, I was able to refocus on my task. I listened intently to the meeting happening on the other side of the wall, surprised that it had been so easy to infiltrate a meeting of this group that had eluded the King for so long, even if I had been briefly caught unawares.

There was some sort of ritualistic meeting opener happening. I wasn’t sure exactly what was going on, as it was a slightly musical way of speaking and not in the Common Tongue, but I knew that the King was counting on me. I strained my hearing to catch everything I could of the strange vocalization… it wasn’t quite song, but it wasn’t quite normal speech either.

It had an odd quality to it, and I found myself listening not only for my task, but for my own edification as well. As I fell into both my task and my curiosity, I finally began to relax, my breath slowing and quieting even more.

I knew that the Council of Barons was corrupt; I was here to gather evidence of such things. I had to admit, however, that their meetings seemed quite elegant, between the spread of food and drink and the strange ritual I was listening to intently. I focused hard, wanting to do my best for the King.

As I sat, completely engaged in my mission, part of my mind began to nag at me to be careful. I knew I was focusing on what was happening in the meeting, on the strange musical speech happening, possibly at the expense of vigilance to my immediate surroundings, but that was just my dedication to my mission, right? I continued to listen, my body relaxing into its position pressed up against the wall.

My eyes began to feel heavy, and I decided that it would be prudent to close them. So that I could hear better.

I began to sway slightly in my crouched position.  I opened my eyes, panicking slightly at the movement, and instinctively grabbed out at the wall, knocking several crates over in the process.

I scrambled to my feet, knowing that nobody ever returned from being captured by the Council of Barons. I had to get out of here now that I’d drawn attention to myself.

I had no sooner found my feet than felt myself being lifted off them, the first Baron to arrive gripping me by the back of my tunic.

I hadn’t initially registered how large he was.

“You spies just keep getting smaller and smaller,” he grinned. “No matter, though. We have plenty of chains to accommodate. I hope you enjoyed eavesdropping on my little pre-meeting Spy Song. It’s enchanted to be very nice to listen to. Among other things. The King has been sending us so many spies, we haven’t even had to recruit any test subjects ourselves in months. If you were ever going to see him again, I’d ask you to thank him for us.”

The Baron, still the only one in the room, began to sing the enchanted song again. This close, the effect returned immediately, my body immediately starting to relax involuntarily. The chains arranged on the table were the last thing I saw as my eyes drifted shut, condemning me to a fate I could scarcely imagine.

I could tell by the Baron’s grin when he captured me, though, that it would not be quick.
